Herb Vincent passed away on Friday morning (June 6). He was 86. He was born February 2, 1928, (2-2-28 to 6-6-14). (He graduated from Burbank High in 1946.) It's about 21 years since his heart transplant, (the heart was from a 17 year old, so the heart even now was only 38 years old).
Herb passed away from advanced prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Velma Boren Vincent (BHS '48), daughter Karen (BHS '69) of Oregon, son Bob (BHS '71) of Valencia, daughter Glenda (BHS '80) of Burbank, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

OBITUARY
Charles Herbert Vincent, 86, of Burbank California passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, June 6, 2014. Herb was born in Hamilton Montana on February 2, 1928 to Frank Seymour Vincent and Flossie Jewel (Pyle) Vincent. He graduated from Burbank High School in 1946 and married Velma Louise Boren on April 9, 1949. During the Korean War he served in the Untied States Air Force at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia and George Air Force Base in Victorville, California.
He was a member of Emmanuel Church for 60 years and a member of the Burbank Kiwanis Club for 44 years. He owned Vincent Realty and was a distinguished realtor in Burbank. He served as a member of the planning commission for the City of Burbank in the 1980’s. His hobbies included restoring Model T Fords, collecting John Deere tractors, family reunions, and travel.
Herb was survived by his wife of 65 years, Velma Vincent; children Karen Bertholet and her husband, The Reverend Dr. Rodney Bertholet of Clackamas, Oregon, Bob Vincent and Louanne Peterson, of Valencia, California, Glenda Vincent of Burbank, California, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Marge and brothers Frank, Donald and Darryl.
Herb received a heart transplant in November 1993 and lived an additional 20 years with his new heart. He was well respected and loved by all who knew him. It was only fitting that Herb, a man with a great heart, was given a second chance at life by receiving a heart transplant.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, great father and grandfather, and friend to many.
Services will be held at Emmanuel Church, 438 East Harvard Road, Burbank, California, on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.

HERB'S LIFE STORY

1928 – 2014
Charles Herbert Vincent was born on February 2, 1928, in Hamilton, Montana. His father, Frank, was 36 and his mother, Flossie, was 32. He had one sister, Marge, and three brothers; Frank, Donald (who died at the age of two from measles), and Darryl. His father died when Herb was 8 years old and in 1939, at the age of 11, he moved to, California so his older brother, Frank, could attend aviation school at the Curtis Wright Technical Institute in Glendale, California. Herb graduated from Burbank High School in 1946 .
Herb met Velma Boren on a blind date in 1947. He had a pilot’s license and loved to fly airplanes. His flight log reveals that his last flight was when he took Velma up for a flight over the San Fernando Valley! Herb and Velma married on April 9, 1949, in Los Angeles, California. They had three children; Karen, Bob, and Glenda; six grandchildren; Joshua, Jacob, Jericho, Jennifer, Rhonda, and John; and nine great grandchildren; Tim, Joshua, Britney, Gabriel, Dartaniah, Hannah, Jonathan, Grace, and Luke.
After graduation from high school, Herb went to work for A.E Peterson Manufacturing – (Peterson Baby Products) in Glendale, California. He worked for Arnie Peterson starting in the shipping department and working his way up to national sales representative.
In 1951, during the Korean War, Herb was called into active duty with the Air National Guard. He served in the 562nd United States Air Force Band at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia and George Air Force Base in Victorville, California. He played the tuba in the marching band and string bass in the dance band and was eventually promoted to Staff Sergeant.
After the Korean War he returned to A.E. Peterson Manufacturing. Arnie and Herb shared a long friendship and in their later years they enjoyed collecting and working on antique automobiles together. Arnie introduced Herb and Velma to Emmanuel Church in Burbank in 1954 where they met their life-long friends, Pete and Kiva Peterson.
After years of being on the road for A.E. Peterson Manufacturing, in the 1960’s Herb decided to work closer to home so he could be with his family. He earned his real estate license and his broker’s license and eventually became a manager for Paul, White Carnahan Realty in Burbank, the same company his mother, Flossie had worked for. In the 1970’s Herb taught real estate licensing courses for the Burbank Unified School District Adult School.
Herb lived a life of service to others. In 1970 he joined the Burbank Kiwanis Club and served with distinction for 44 years until his death. No job was too small for Herb whether it be setting up chairs, leading singing, writing the newsletter, or serving as president of the Kiwanis Club.
In 1974 Herb and Velma opened Vincent Realty and was elected president of the Burbank Board of Realtors.
In the 1980’s Herb served as a member and chairman of the Burbank Planning Commission for the City of Burbank.
Other areas of community service included:
• Emmanuel Church - member of the choir, member of the deacon board, and chairman of the church. Under Herb’s leadership, Emmanuel Church became affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America.
• Burbank Historical Society - docent and board member
• Burbank High School Alumni Association - Editor for 10 years of the “Senior Bulldogs Newsletter”
Frank and Flossie Vincent’s five children were born over a 16 year period and the four surviving Vincent siblings all passed away over a 9 month period from September 2013 – June 2014
After suffering cardiomyopathy for several years, Herb received a heart transplant on November 11, 1993. This was in the early stages of organ transplantation. Herb was the 435th heart transplant recipient at UCLA and lived an additional 20 years with his new heart.
Herb was well respected and loved by all who knew him. It was only fitting that Herb, a man with a great heart, was given a second chance at life by receiving a heart transplant. He will be remembered as a loving husband, great father and grandfather, and friend to many.
Herb passed away peacefully at his home on June 6, 2014, in Burbank, California, at the age of 86.

A class of their own

Herb Vincent sat in his 1914 Ford at Johnny Carson Park Saturday and chatted with graduates from Burbank and Burroughs high schools as they stopped to admire his wood-slatted truck.
It was one of more than 30 cars entered into the car show that accompanied the sixth annual Burroughs-Burbank All-Class Reunion that attracted more than 500 Saturday.
Vincent graduated from Burbank in 1946 and his wife, Velma (Boren) Vincent, is a '48 alumni.
"Velma and I didn't go to college. For those who went to college, that's a bigger deal," said Vincent, a retired real estate agent. "Their friends are in college but our friends are from high school."
All three of their children graduated from Burbank, including their youngest, Glenda Vincent, a 1980 grad who was at the reunion Saturday.
Herb Vincent is editor of the monthly Senior Bulldog News for Burbank Alumni Association members.
The association was formed 10 years ago when four alumni used to meet regularly to reminisce, Herb Vincent said.
Today the association has 1,450 members and more than 80 show up for the monthly meetings on the first Monday of every month at the Elks Club on Hollywood Way, he said.
Burbank's class of 1946's 60th reunion will be held July 1 at the Howard Museum in Burbank, Vincent said.
The Vincents weren't surprised that there weren't as many younger alumni at the event.
"There were nine from my class," said Glenda Vincent. "It's really about the 50s bunch with the Road Kings [Car Club]," said Velma Vincent.
Linda Mustion, a 1967 Burbank High School graduate, set up her Burbank Veterans Memorial booth, which has become a tradition for the all-class reunion.
She started the memorial two years ago and uses her own money to dig up information about Burbank grads who died in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
Catherine (Hunter) Nichols earned a certificate for being the oldest of all alumni at the reunion. She graduated from Burbank in 1938.
Four of her five children graduated from Burbank High, she said. Many of her 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren are expected to become Burbank alumni, she said.
"I like to see everybody," she said. "I don't know anybody but my kids had friends I still know who show up."
Jim Bittle rode his red 2003 Harley Davidson Road King Firefighter edition motorcycle to the reunion.
Bittle, a 1964 Burbank grad, served 28 years as a Glendale Fire Department firefighter before retiring in 2001.
"I come just to visit old friends and re-live old memories," Bittle said. "It keeps my mind active."
Event organizer Linda (Melton) Damarjian, a 1961 Burroughs grad, was busy calling out the names of door-prize winners and keeping the reunion rolling.
The event formed when Burroughs alumni started chatting on the classmates.com website about seven years ago, she said.
The first year about 50 Burroughs from various classes decided to gather. Soon, Burbank grads were also expressing interest and the event became an all-class, two-school celebration, she said.
