FACEBOOK COMMENT from Matt Denny

He was 1981, trumpet in the marching band. First wife some know, Tonya Haggard '82, sister of Steve Haggard '81, who is also deceased.
I believe he passed from undiagnosed COVID. He had lived in the Springs since his first marriage began.
I miss him dearly, He was one of those friends you could count on for virtually anything, the kind of friend you could skip talking to for 10 years and you'd pick right up were you left off.
RIP.

LAPD Unravel Murder Cover-Up In Sylmar, Discover Backyard Grave

By CBSLA Staff
December 10, 2021 at 10:14 pm
Filed Under:Double Murder, KCAL 9, Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA) — Marcel Gradvohl is accused of killing his uncle and burying him in a Sylmar backyard, then killing his mother and staging it as a suicide all to collect a life insurance settlement.

The 38-year-old was almost in the clear until one officer looking at the man’s property noticed evidence of a freshly dug grave, Patrol officers were called to the home on Monday for a possible suicide after finding a 67-year-old woman hanging. According to officers, her injuries weren’t consistent with Gradvohl’s description of suicide.

“The information and the story that was initially presented to the officers was not consistent with the injuries they observed at the crime scene,” said Dep. Chief Alan Hamilton. Officers then brought in homicide detectives to investigate, who located a possible grave in the backyard from a neighbor’s tip.

“Prior to the staged suicide, our suspect had engaged in a confrontation with another family member, committed a murder and attempted to conceal the body by burying it in the backyard,”

Hamilton said. Gradvohl was later arrested for the murder of his mother, Maureen, who police say was strangled. Detectives also say he shot and killed his uncle, 58-year-old Edward Steckel, and buried the body.

Investigators say Gradvohl ended up confessing to the double murder. He is being held on $4 million bail.

UPDATE

Man who killed uncle, staged mother’s suicide sentenced to life in prison
by: Travis Schlepp
Posted: Apr 19, 2022

A man who killed his mother and uncle in Sylmar and then attempted to stage his mother’s death to look like a suicide pleaded guilty to two counts of murder Monday.

Marcel Gradvohl, 38, was arrested in November 2021 for the deaths of his mother, Maureen Gradvohl, and his uncle, Edward Steckel.

The Los Angeles Police Department began investigating their deaths on Nov. 28, 2021, after Marcel had called them to report finding his mother’s body.

When police arrived at his mother’s home on the 12600 block of Amboy Avenue, they were greeted by Marcel who told police he found his mother hanging in the garage. Maureen was declared dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives began investigating and learned that Marcel had been spotted just a day before digging in the backyard of the property. Investigators later found Steckel’s body buried in the backyard.

During police questioning, Marcel admitted to killing his uncle during a dispute on Nov. 26, 2021. Later that same day he strangled his mother. The following day he buried his uncle in the backyard and the day after that he called police to report his mother’s suicide.

Gradvohl was then arrested and booked for their murders.

On Monday, he appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree murder. He was sentenced to 25 years to life plus four years for the use of a handgun in his uncle’s death and 25 years to life plus one year for the use of a rope in his mother’s death.

The sentences will run consecutively meaning he will have to finish serving one sentence before he begins serving the next.

Harry Herman Olswanger, BHS '81 (1963-2004)

Harry Olswanger

Today, Charmaine Snow posted on Facebook the above photo along with her touching thoughts below. RIP Harry.

Dear BHS classes of 1979-1981

I just saw notes about Harry's death (and life).

I remember playing my trumpet for him onstage for a talent assembly at BHS (He sang “New York City Rhythm” a la Barry Manilow - with a newfangled cordless mic, too!) Many of us did the school operetta of Hello Dolly! I was in the pit. A rarity, it was the first time any high school play was held over for an extra week! It was so fun, My mom surprised the entire cast with a wrap party at my house - lots of fun and great memories.

Harry O did live every bit of life to its fullest. After leaving high school, he worked in Long Beach, with Joanne Worley in Hello Dolly! (big surprise). He lived in Hollywood for a couple of years. His folks moved to Roseville to retire, he soon joined them, traipsing from Sacramento to San Francisco with his dance and singing talents. He played a production of “Hair” in SF..He became very sober before 1990 & stayed that way, as it kept him alive & fairly healthy. He moved to Palm Springs & met Angie Dickinson. With her, he choreographed, danced, and sang a gig for the Coachella Valley Water District. Harry had a very good love life with his friend Miles. They went to Hawaii in 1996 and were very grateful for their lives together.

When his father died of ALS, he was quite lost & took care of his mom as much as he could. His parents were both very kind to me and welcomed me to their new home in Roseville several times. When my own mother died, It was Harry who went to comfort her husband, Sam. (Sam had joked in the past about how H.O. reminded him of Loretta Young, with his floor-length bathrobe). Only after Sam died, did I find a lovely card (to him from Harry), saying that my mom was a good friend & she should have lived longer.

Harry met a few older celebrities became good friends with a gal who was an MGM Girl - they had so much in common! She was Vivian Coe, (Vivian Austin & Vivian Grow - she married her eye Dr - Dr Grow). When (blind) Vivian moved to a retirement home for actors, Harry followed and stayed in North Hollywood nearby. I lived in Long Beach. When I learned we had lost Harry, I could only feel sad. He was the One who was always a friend to me after high school. It was Harry that kept me encouraged and playing my horn. Still does. It was Harry who treated me to a Hollywood premiere of the original “A Star is Born” remastered with unseen scenes & music, A Chorus Line at the Pantages, Joan Baez in Concord CA.

I graduated from BHS in 1979 & in 1980, in college, heard of this ‘strange, hard to define GAY Cancer’. The PTBs called it GRID at first, not wanting to define the anagram. We tried. We cried. We lost so many great people we never even got to know!

Over my life, I recall Harry H Olswanger as my dearest friend, and a smart & loving man to all who knew him. I am now in Cathedral City, near Palm Springs. When I’m driving around town & hearing the old music, I feel Harry at nearly every turn. He haunts me at stoplights & I truly get a chill on the hottest days, just thinking of him. Lost, but Never forgotten!

What a nice tribute. It made me think of another very talented actor in my brother's class of '66 - who died in a car crash a few years after he starred in My Fair Lady....I think he last name was Romano. And of Terry Pittsford, who played Harold Hill in BHS's first production (and it was truly fabulous) of The Music Man. Terry, who was wonderful in the role, did live a much longer life, dying in his late sixties/early seventies a couple of years ago. Many talented people went to BHS.

Kellie Lowman

Kevin Lowman

This discovery occurred on Facebook when Jojo Renee wrote in April 2019, "Hello. My name is Jojo, I’m currently searching for a photo of my birth father Kevin Lowman. The only information I know about him so far is his name, his accident and that he graduated Burbank High School in 1980. Any information on him would be appreciated. Thank you."

Your Grandfathers name is Ed Lowman I’m not sure if he still lives in Burbank Kevin grew up in the house on the corner of Sunset Canyon and Olive Ave in Burbank on the North East corner...

Tom Carlile
Exactly right Mr. Davis! Kevin was a neighbor of mine back in the early 1970s when I lived at Olive and Sunset. Sweet kid along with Kelly and younger brother Kenny. Kenny graduated from BHS in 1981. He was friends in the choir and pop show with my sister in law. I don’t know if father Ed Lowman is still around. But you might try to locate Kenny Lowman for more info about Kevin.

Holly Cleeland
I can’t find any photos from Junior High. Kevin in Junior High was Mr. All American. Smart, Great Athlete, Handsome. Things started to change for him by the 10th grade. He was friends with Brett Saunders, Danny Davis and Kelly Murphy. They may have photosof your Dad. Try Jim Johnson too.

Holly Cleeland

Peggy Beliveau
Holly Cleeland Kenny lives in Burbank with his dad. I see him a few times a year. Kacey lives in Seattle.

Jojo Renee I knew your dad and your aunt Kellie. I graduated in 1980. I have pics of both of them. I will definitely dig through my stuff and look. Both were wonderful people. Your dad was a sweetheart. Kathy Cone was really good friends with Kevin. Message her. She might have some pics. Also girls that were cheerleaders from clas of 79 might have pics of Kellie. Kevin was a cool guy and we would shoot hoops and lift weights back in jr. high. One time during PE he busted my head open with a baseball bat, (accidental) and my mom had to drive me to st. joseph's to get stitches in my head. I'm on the 4th row, (#27) next to B. Strong

In 9th grade Lisa Lamprich was running for class President. She was a year younger than us. I suggested a sure fire win for her. I said I will work out a skit for the assembly’s with the cutest guys in school just standing there with vote for Lisa. Kevin and Kip Currie were the guys I picked. It was so much fun!!!

I was running for 8th grade president and Holly, you persuaded Kevin and Kip to dance around on stage to the song "You Light Up My Life", but you reworked all the words with a word play on my last name. Kevin and Kip were definitely the cutest guys and I believe they danced around with lamp shades πŸ˜‚, while Melissa Walsh played the piano and Harry Olswanger (RIP) also played a role. Jo Jo- Your father was always incredibly nice to me. I also knew his brother Kenny (your uncle) well as he was in my class '82. I knew you Aunt Kellie (RIP), as she was in my college sorority. I'm sorry for your loss, but so glad you are able to learn a little about your father from this FB page. Therein, lies the blessing. ❤️

I knew your father well and am so very sorry for your loss.

Jr. Year 1980. The year of the big teacher’s strike. The yearbook company put all the names in front of the picture pages, and listed everyone in order by first name. I wrote in the names of many classmates at the time, your dad was one of them! We graduated in 1981, but I don’t see a senior picture for him in that yearbook. He was very cute, very sweet, very popular! I’m so sorry for your loss❤️
