William Shepherd, BHS '26/'28 (1908-1997) & Glenna Thompson Shepherd, BHS '29 (1912-1993)

Debra Asay sent this notice and these wonderful photos of her grandparents...

My grandparents went to Burbank High. I just came across your BHS blog today for the first time. I have been looking for places to post items I have that belonged to my grandparents and am offering you the images I have. Wishing you a wonderful day.

William Otto Shepherd - Class of 1926, but he didn't graduate till 1928. In winter of 1926 he came down with a very bad case of scarlet fever/scarlatina. Lost a lot of body weight, it took a number of months for him to come back to health. Born: May 28, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. Died Dec. 26, 1997 in Bullhead City, Arizo na.

Glenna Gertrude Thompson - Class of 1929. June 28 1912 in Needles, California. Died Jan. 30, 1993 in Bullhead City, Arizona.

Otto first saw Glenna at a church mass. He said that he knew the first time he saw her sitting there under a big brimmed black hat that she was the one. They dated about 4 years and were married Oct. 11, 1931 at Church of the Holy Trinity Los Angeles, California.

Vic Tyback, BHS '48 (1930-1990)

The following is from Wikipedia:

Victor "Vic" Tayback (January 6, 1930 – May 25, 1990) was a New York City-born American actor of Syrian descent.

Tayback moved with his family to Burbank, California, during his teenage years and attended Burbank High School. He ended up living in the city for the rest of his life.

His most famous role was diner owner Mel Sharples in the 1974 movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, followed up by his reprisal of the role on the related television series, called Alice, which ran from 1976 to 1985. For nine seasons, Tayback was always a central character and favorite on Alice.

Tayback also guest starred in an episode of the fourth season of All in the Family which was called "Et tu, Archie?" In this particular episode, Tayback portrayed Archie's old friend, Joe Tucker.

Tayback's performance as the alien gangster boss Jojo Krako in the Star Trek episode "A Piece of the Action" was also memorable.

Kirk: ...I don't think you're stupid, Mr. Krako; I just think your behavior is arrested.
Krako: I AIN'T NEVER BEEN ARRESTED IN MY WHOLE LIFE!!!

He also appeared in TV commercials including one for Aqua Velva after shave lotion as a spectator in the stands who shouts at then-Cincinnati Reds third baseman Pete Rose "Hey, Pete Rose! What does a man really want in an after-shave lotion?"

One of Tayback's last roles was in the 1989 video remake of the Buck Owens (and later The Beatles) hit "Act Naturally" which featured Owens and former Beatle Ringo Starr.

Tayback died of a sudden heart attack in 1990 and was interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, California. Tayback was 60 years of age. He was survived by his wife Sheila (married in 1962). They had one son, Christopher, who briefly acted before attending Law School and is now a partner at Quinn Emanuel in Los Angeles.

--- end ---

On a personal note, I worked for a company, Peterson Mechanical, who sells Carrier HVAC equipment and was surprised to see Vic doing this ad for Carrier!

6/21/08 UPDATE
Got this interesting email from Alan Landros today:

Another "small world" story, this one about Vic Tayback. Sometime after Sherri Giessinger's dad passed away in 1965, her mother sold their home on Birmingham above Kenneth Rd. in Burbank and bought a home on Hamline at the top of Groton in Burbank. It was around 1966 or 1967. The home on Birmingham was the home Sherri grew up in and where she lived while at BHS. When they sold the home on Birmingham they sold it to Vic Tayback! He and his family lived there for quite a few years before they eventually moved to Glendale, which is where he passed away in 1990.

JANUARY 8, 2023 UPDATE

1978 Valley News Article submitted by Linda Durkee Johnson

"Getting Ready for the 70th anniversary celebration of Burbank High on Saturday are actors Vic Tayback left and Anson Willimas. They are shown with student Linda Johnson and Principal Robert Leland. More than 1,200 have inquired about the reunion."

Kenny Markham, BHS '66 (1948-2022)

 Kenneth Ray Markham
January 3, 1948 - July 20, 2022

Obituary

Kenneth Ray Markham was born to Raymond Walker and Merille (Harpole) Markham in Burbank.

Kenneth enjoyed surfing the California beaches. Then CARS became his passion. He loved working on them, it was hands-on. He enjoyed music all his life and worked at a stereo repair shop (Perfection Audio), inside the Hollywood Federated Electronics — they had all the newest equipment.  He was like a kid in a candy store!  He met so many musicians … liked most.

He met Donna Fern at a wedding in 1972, married in 1980 and started Markham Construction. He did new construction but found remodel challenging. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. With his body getting older, he went into wholesaling lumber at Eugene Forest, Shasta Sierra, Wildwood and the 2002 started Bear Creek Lumber.

He retired to build a ’55 Ford fir Woodburn Racetrack… what fun he had! He loved animals, his dogs were always at his side whether in the truck, classic car or bed. Progression of dementia stopped him from driving, so his buddies would take him out is his ’55 Ford or their cool cars. Thanks to all who put a smile on his face and shared time and laughter together.

He leaves behind his wife, Donna Markham; sister, Mary Janette (Robert) Adams; adopted sister, Robin (Thwing) Havens); nieces, Lisa (Andy) Hazlewood, Heather Fern and Deanna Mastenson; and all his many friends who he considered family. He was preceded by his adopted brother, Russell Szerlip, and his nephew, William Adams.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to Greenhill Humane Society and Peacehealth Sacred Heart Hospice. They have the kindest, caring and most knowledgeable staff. Thank you.
