Daniel Shepard Brumley

Sadly, we learned that the BHS Class of 1965, lost another classmate recently. Daniel S. Brumley ’65 passed away suddenly about 2 weeks ago from a heart attack, as reported by his cousin, Judy Allen Houston JBHS ’64.

Danny was born on October 23, 1947 and was originally from Sapulpa, Oklahoma. After graduating from BHS in 1965, he studied Journalism at San Fernando Valley State College. He lived in Pollock Pines, California for many years.

Dan was pre-deceased by his parents (Liz and Carl Brumley) and his son, (Aaron). He is survived by his daughter, (Jennifer Brumley) and his sister, (Karla Pappas), nephews, Bradley DeHaven and Bryce DeHaven, two grandsons, (Leland and London Roche) and his cousin, (Judy Allen Houston).

Danny was a childhood friend of mine and lived right across the street from me on California Street for many years. He was always a nice friendly (kind of shy) boy and he had a great sense of humor. It makes me sad to think he is no longer with us.

Our hearts are broken... we lost John Coyle on Saturday.

John was an amazing man who not only served our country as a Marine but also locally as a Police Officer. His accomplishments are many and he was always helping wherever he went. John was an excellent cook. He was Exalted Ruler for the Burbank Elk's Lodge for 2 years in a row. He and his beautiful wife Cathy Nicholls Coyle, BHS '67, raised two sons. John so enjoyed their sweet grandchildren. 

John will be greatly missed by us all...

OCTOBER 3, 2026 UPDATE

Trudie Lombard Hentze is a very close friend to John and Cathy Coyle and she wrote this lovely memorial piece...

It breaks my heart to report the passing of our dear classmate John Coyle - BHS 65. He lost his heroic 2-year battle with Glioblastoma (brain cancer) on Saturday, September 26th.

 

John proudly served in the US Marine Corp, was a decorated officer of the LAPD for 18 years, then he was loaned to the FBI Los Angeles Task Force on Terrorism until his retirement in 2005. He ended his career working security for CBS Studios until 2015. His last job was working as Betty White’s bodyguard on the set of “Hot in Cleveland”.

John was also a Burbank Elk the past 17 years, serving all the chairs, becoming Exalted Ruler for 2 years, and then the Associate Vice President of the California-Hawaii Metropolitan District.

In the meantime, John remained dedicated to Burbank High 1965 classmates for all the reunions and other special events since graduation. He was a regular at the Senior Bulldog lunches and served as the accountant for several years. Everyone loved his jovial introductions and ability to take charge of any event. 

John and wife, Cathy Nicholls Coyle - BHS 67, celebrated every day of their 57-year marriage, all the way up to John's 80th birthday party on September 14th. In addition to Cathy, John is survived by sons Clint JBHS 89 and Travis BHS 90, 4 grandchildren, sisters Nancy Coyle Blackmer BHS 62 and Peggy Coyle Walker BHS 70, sister-in-law Joan Nicholls Dempsey, brothers-in-law Richard Nicholls BHS 64 and George Nicholls BHS 65, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Rest in peace my “best guy friend”. Thank you for all the wonderful memories.

With sadness I want to share the loss of our classmate Jo Ann (Knight) James, class of 1965. She died on August 10, 2026 in Auburn, CA.

We met in first grade at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School when she was 4 & I was 5. We nurtured our friendship for 75 years.  We attended the 50th Reunion of BHS class of 65. She was a wonderful friend to me & many others along the way. I will miss her profoundly particularly our annual birthday calls as our birthdays were only 3 days apart. 

I always called her Jody, her nickname growing up. I will remember her kindnesses & unconditional support of me, her friend. Actually I never remember her having an unkind word about anyone. That is a powerful legacy in today's world. Bless her. 

Jo Ann had lymphoma. Her husband was Ed James, BHS 63 who passed away in February of this year and she is survived by their two sons Erik and Dean, their wives and grandchildren.

So sorry to report that Richard Dean passed away September 28, 2025, just 8 days after his 78 th birthday. His wife reported that he had been gravely ill with a G.I. bleed.  Richard served in the Coast Guard reserve. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Edna McFarlane Dean - BHS '70 in Magnolia, Texas.

"Sad Farewell... This Tina Smith Kamins. I lost my wonderful husband, Richard Kamins, yesterday (Monday Oct. 6th). He fought cancer and heart disease like a warrior for decades. 

We were married for 54 years and loved each other since we were BHS ‘65 classmates.  

We’ve been very blessed. Next month would have been our 55th anniversary. We have a wonderful family, 2 sons, 3 grandsons, and 1 granddaughter."

Peter J. Broadley – BHS 65, passed away 9/3/2024 from lung cancer at his home in New Glarus, WI. He was born 9/1/1947 in Glendale, CA with his fraternal twin brother, John P. Broadley.  Peter grew up with a passion for surfing and boating with his family.  In July of 1967, he was drafted into the US Army and served in the 173rd Airborne in Vietnam. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.  

Pete married Carol Follendorf in 1975 in Wisconsin Dells, then they relocated to the Lake Tahoe area in 1978.  In 1982 they moved to Oregon, WI where they raised their daughters, Jennifer and Allison. They owned and operated Pete’s Auto Parts in Oregon for several years, and then Pete entered the electrical apprenticeship program with the IBEW Local 159 in Madison. He worked at the University of Wisconsin until he retired.  

Pete always enjoyed the outdoors - boating, fishing, camping, and skiing with his family, along with golfing with his buddies. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol at Devil’s Head Ski Resort for 20 years. In 2002 Pete and Carol built their dream home where they could enjoy the spectacular views overlooking the New Glarus, Wisconsin hillsides.  For the past 8 years they spent the winter seasons together on Oahu, Hawaii, with their daughters joining them for many special visits.  

Peter is survived by his wife Carol, daughters Jennifer and Allison, and his sister Heather Ludwig.  He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother John P. Broadley.

JERI REMEMBRANCE 

Jeri Hullihan Pinnell was born in Glendale, CA on January 3, 1948. The family moved to Burbank shortly after she was born. Jeri went to Washington ES, John Muir JRHS, and Burbank High, where she directed and managed several school plays. Jeri was a Queen of Job’s Daughters and had many lifelong friends from that experience. She received an AA Degree from Riverside CC. 

Jeri married BHS ‘65 classmate, Gary Pinnell (RIP), and loved going to Monument Valley, Sedona and Carmel on vacations. She was attracted to the airline business and was a flight attendant for American Airlines for 45 years, ending with international flights to London, Tokyo and Shanghai. 

Jeri was a friend to many and dearly loved by her brother Jim, BHS ‘64, his children and eight grandchildren. Her sudden death on June 10, 2025 was unexpected, but we will cherish our wonderful memories.

With great sorrow and deep gratitude for her life, we announce that Christie Jae Nicholls peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 21, 2025, at the age of 77.

Born in Burbank, California on September 30, 1947, Christie was the beloved daughter of Clarice and James Gibbs, and a cherished sister to Sheryle Gibbs Nelson and Ron Gibbs.

A Life Full of Joy and Purpose

Christie’s life was a beautiful reflection of joy, faith, and love. She often spoke of her favorite childhood memories—climbing trees, being a Girl Scout, going on family adventures, and spending time outdoors.

She found fulfillment in a wide array of passions: • Marriage counseling and church fellowship • Holiday gatherings and storytelling • Hiking, camping, and gardening • Teaching children and tutoring • Cuddling her pets and laughing with loved ones • Writing poems, being creative, and nurturing deep friendships

Career and Family

Christie worked in several roles in her early adult life. She especially enjoyed being a TripTik planner at AAA, helping families map out memorable vacations. She was also a receptionist at a paper manufacturer. After several years of caring for her own children at home, she was a preschool teacher at Bible Fellowship Preschool. Later, she opened her own home daycare, where she shared her love for learning and nature with countless children. Her special joy was teaching reading and watching young minds grow.

She was a dedicated mother to her five children and a beloved figure in the neighborhood, where many kids lovingly called her “Mom.”

A Loving Legacy

In her final years, Christie lived in Big Bear, California, a favorite getaway she often visited with her husband, George, her high school sweetheart and partner of 58 years. As her health declined, she moved to Camarillo, California to be closer to family.

Christie is survived by: • Her loving husband, George Nicholls • Her five children: Eric, Tyler, Aaron, Trevor, and Lindsay • Her twelve grandchildren: Danielle, Nicolas, Alyssa, Nathan, Hayden, Chase, Connor, Cameron, Chloe, Aaralyn, Ciana, and Emerie

Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched with compassion, wisdom, laughter, and unwavering faith.

Romans 12:12 “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
