Holly's Obituary

Holly Anne Davis, 61, born on February 20, 1951, in Inglewood, California, passed away September 5, 2012 in Long Beach, California. She was a long time resident of Long Beach and retired as an Administrative Specialist from the Teacher Credentialing Office at CSULB.

She is survived by her sons Jesse, John, and James Davis; her grandchildren Erica, Dustin, and Emma; her brother John Oden, BHS class 1966; and her parents John and JoAnne Oden.

A public memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, September 10 at The Church in Long Beach located at 4911 Orange Ave. Her private funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 12, at the Forest Lawn, Cypress, California.

She was a good friend in high school, and was a member of the first all-girl Cross Country Management team, consisting of Holly, Joan Knight, Debbie Gilbert, Marion Szoke and I! Holly was my next door neighbor on Amber Lane. Our families were very close and we used to take vacations together. It still breaks my heart that she passed away at such a young age. She was truly one of the nicest people I have ever known. I still keep in touch with her mom.

An SDSU alumnus and lifelong Delta Chi fraternity member, Brian Hallagan worked in the mortgage lending field, but was best known as Coach and one of the "founding fathers" of the Carmel Mountain Ranch Little League.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years Janel, sons Dallas (Nicole), and Brett, grandson Cash, mother Carole, sister Coleen (Roy), niece Fiona, brother-in-law Patrick (Sandy), and many friends.

Memorial Mass 6/23, 10:30 am at St. Michael's Church in Poway. Celebration of Life 6/24, 24 pm at Old Poway Park.

Brian was a true Burbank "kid" ... His Mom, Carole, ( graduated BHS in '51 ) and Aunt Barbara were the children of Frederick and Mildred Clint who lived on Verdugo @ Kenneth ... Frederick Clint was a Violin Teacher in a small music studio attached to the Verdugo @ Kenneth Home. Brian Dad was Robert Hallagan, a Navy Veteran who taught Band and Orchestra in the L.A. Unified School District ( Sylmar High School ). Unfortunately, Robert Hallagan passed away just as Brian was graduating from BHS in 1973. Brian's younger sister is Colleen Halligan and they were very close up until Brian passed. Brian's Mom, Carloe, is still living in the low Desert communities. A very intelligent, athletic guy, Brian loved SDSU life and left this earth too soon ...

On October 26, 2015, Deborah Boyd posted on Facebook that Chris Gillander died the previous week in his sleep.

She wrote, "Chris had one sister Mary and two brothers, Joe and John. He was my husband's cousin and I've known him since I was 15 years old. RIP Chris, you will be missed. "

Sadly, we have just confirmed the passing of Deborah Ellen Barham Nolan who was born April 24, 1951 in Los Angeles County and died on February 9, 1999 in Hudson, New York.

Her husband was Christopher Nolan.

Suellen Swartzbaugh Van Rensselaer, BHS '58 (1940-2018)

Suellen Swartzbaugh Van Rensselaer

Suellen was born on May 28, 1940 in North Baltimore, Ohio. Sue was the daughter of Amon Elias Swartzbaugh, and Mildred Paden Swartzbaugh. Her father Amen then moved the family to Burbank CA, where he was hired as a Coach.

She passed away on July 17, 2018 at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, CA. After entering the hospital for respiratory issues, she died peacefully in the hospital from a clot to the lungs.

Sue graduated from Burbank High School, and attended one year at Glendale College. She married Edward Maunsell Van Rensselaer in August, 1961. They first lived in Hacienda Heights, but only for a short time. Then to Orange County, CA where they lived on Mesa drive in Newport Beach for a short time. Ultimately they moved to their dream location of Emerald Bay in Laguna Beach with their three children. The family enjoyed the beach life where Sue made lifelong friends. Sue played Tennis with the Emerald Bay tennis ladies group, and enjoyed watching her three children play volleyball on the beach and swim meets at the Emerald Bay community pool.

Sue was known for her taste in fashion, worked for the Red Balloon and Ducks and Co in Newport Beach. Sue also a talented Decorator and enjoyed helping others decorate their homes. She also worked as a caregiver for 10 years, helping Seniors stay at home.

Sue and Ned eventually divorced in 1980. Sue stayed in Orange County until moving to Palm Desert where she had a small retail store business specializing in Lucite. Sue then moved back to the OC when her first grandson was born and then remained until her passing. She was a very devoted grandmother and loved spending time with all six of her grandchildren. She was also a wonderful Aunt to both her Swartzbaugh and Van Rensselaer Nieces and Nephews.

Suellen is survived by her children and their spouses, Paige Allison Van Rensselaer Kunkle, Jay Geoffrey Kunkle, Heidi Sue Van Rensselaer Kane, Christopher Michael Kane, and Ryan Edward Maunsell Van Rensselaer, Catherine Alisa Spath Van Rensselaer, her Grandchildren, Gavin Hendrick Van Rensselaer Kunkle, Allison Clare Van Rensselaer Kunkle, Carly Alida Kane, Paden James Kane, Halle Noelle Van Rensselaer and Hope Gabrielle Van Rensselaer.

Her brother Jack Swartzbaugh passed away in 2016 and is survived by Mary Joan Swartzbaugh, Laurel & John Yocca, Luanne & Kevin Sprong, Scott & Kelly Swartzbaugh and Brett & Melinda Swartzbaugh.

There is a family celebration at the home of the Kane family on August 3, 2018.
