Joan Knight, BHS '69 (1951-2025)

Joan Margaret Knight
November 13, 1951 - September 8, 2025

Oh so sad... we just learned from Janet Knight Morales, BHS '65, that her younger sister, Joan Knight, BHS '69, lost her battle with ovarian cancer yesterday September 8, 2025.

Joan is survived by her daughter Justine Knight Hawley, step-daughter, Sarah Smith Robinson, sisters Judy Knight Wulff, BHS '63, Janet Knight Morales, BHS '65 and brother Bill Knight, BHS '68. She is also cousin to Diana Ziegler Larsen, BHS '67.

Larry O’Brien, BHS '69, just sent me these wonderful photos of him with Joan and wrote, "I was so honored to take Joan to our homecoming dance. We duplicated this photo at our 50th. She was such a sweetheart, really admired and loved her. My condolences to the Knight family. She was a great Lady. ❤️"

TRIBUTE FROM RICHARD ASPEY
Sept 11, 2025

Very sad to hear about the passing of Joan. She was a dear, special person.

I first met Joan in Mixed Chorus at John Muir, and we remained friends throughout high school. I recall hiking in Brand Canyon with a small group. We hiked as far into the canyon as we could manage, helping each other get past the tough spots. Later, contact became sporadic until we reconnected at that massive reunion many of us attended at Griffith Park-what year was that? Sometime following that reunion, I visited Joan when she was living in Cambria. We chatted all day, catching up on the old days, about her year in Barcelona, and about her adopted daughter, Justine. Our activities that day included an entirely spontaneous drive to Carol’s vineyards. We couldn’t get Carol on the phone, but we drove over there nevertheless. And quite predictively, she wasn’t home. We last had email contact in 2014, before our 45th reunion, which she didn’t attend. I last saw and chatted with Joan at our 50th reunion.

RIP Joan ♥️

There were three of us Joans and because of alphabetical seating we always sat close to each other in classes we shared; Joan King (me), Joan Knight, and Joan Miller. I am the sole survivor at this time of the trio. Genuinely nice people whose loss is mourned. The world is richer for their presence. Rest in peace beautiful ladies.

  2. Joannie was instrumental in bringing me back into the world of academics, which I had lost sight of somewhere in Junior High. She was a good friend throughout those school years.
