Former Teacher of the Year, Jon Olin, Passes Away

By Press Release On January 14, 2020

From the Burbank Unified School District:

Jon Olin

It is with heavy hearts that we mark the passing of long-time educator and past Teacher of the Year and Mentor, Jon Monroe Olin, whose history with the District stretched from his days as a BUSD student to his service as a teacher, which continued until 2011.

Mr. Olin was a graduate of the 1961 class of Burbank High School. He began his teaching career with BUSD in the fall of 1967 at Jordan Middle School, where he taught Adaptive Physical Education to Special Education students. While at Jordan he took two leaves of absence to travel and teach in Greece, 1973–1975, and the Dominican Republic, 1979–1980, providing instruction in P.E. and social studies/world culture.

In 1990 he moved to Burbank High School, where he taught P.E. and Health, served as the B-Fit and TUPE Coordinator, and coached many sports including Varsity Water Polo and Swim, leading the team to a CIF Championship. He also taught courses at the Learning Center at the Burbank Adult School. After his retirement in 2005, he returned to the District to work as a substitute teacher for both general education students and adult students from 2007 to 2011.

He is survived by his wife Dorothea, daughters Meg and Alexandra, son Christopher, their partners, and five grandchildren. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

An Open House and Memorial will be held in his honor:

Saturday, February 22, 11:30 a.m.

Patricia Moore Cervenka, BHS '69 (1951-2019)

Patricia Jean Moore Cervenka
November 12, 1951 - December 4, 2019

Today, Debra Brewer Hagan posted the following on Facebook...

In memory of Patricia Moore Cervenka, BHS ‘69 -

Her daughter has asked me to share the sad news that we lost Patty suddenly and unexpectedly on December 4th, 2019. Please keep her daughter Christina, son Timothy and husband Ron (BHS ‘72) in your thoughts and prayers. RIP, dear Patty. Celebration of Life will be held:

Saturday 12/21/19 at 11am
Grace Baptist Church
22833 Copper Hill Drive
Santa Clarita, CA 91350

And from Patty's daughter, Christina...

Please let the BHS community know and spread the word. I know my mom was such a friendly part of the community and I want as many people to come celebrate her life as possible. My incredible mother died on Wednesday evening very unexpectedly. From what I understand, she had an amazing day and was feeling great, went to a Beach Boys concert, and then her heart gave out and she was gone. She was the original badass who climbed Mt. Whitney three times, surfed, camped, became a pilot in the 70s when women “didn’t do that,” and raised my brother and I to be strong, independent people. There are no words for a loss like this. She meant so much to so many and gave all of herself to anyone she met. I’m heartbroken and just wish I could hug my mom one more time. Let’s just all celebrate the incredible, quirky, wonderful woman my mom was. I love you forever, mom. I miss you so much.

RIP Patricia.

Henderson woman talks of 9-year battle with myeloma

Claudia Brown is beating the odds with multiple myeloma.

“They told me three to five years when I was diagnosed,” the 74-year-old said. “There’s only three stages, and I was stage three.”

Nine years ago, Brown was diagnosed with the second most common form of blood cancer. Her diagnosis can be attributed to a routine blood test and a doctor with a good eye — Brown said she hadn’t shown any common symptoms.

The deadly form of cancer can manifest in many ways including bone pain, bones that break easily, frequent fever and fatigue. In 2013, 22,562 people in the United States were diagnosed with the disease and 11,801 people died from it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“There are better treatments out there now than there has ever been,” said Kelly Cox, director of support group outreach and regional community workshops for the International Myeloma Foundation. “There are paths to success in treatment of myeloma.”

When that routine blood test revealed abnormal protein levels, her doctor prescribed a stem-cell transplant.

“I had my first stem-cell transplant at the Mayo Clinic six months after being diagnosed, and they gave me three months of chemo to wipe out my system,” she said. “In 2015, I had my second stem-cell transplant. The first one worked, the second one didn’t.”

Brown, who lives in Sun City Anthem, is currently being treated with medications that are based on results of weekly blood tests.

“You can only have two stem-cell transplants, so I’ve been on and off chemo for the last nine years,” she said.

She credits a positive attitude and a strong, supportive group of family and friends for her success fighting the disease.

“You have to be your own advocate for something like this,” she said. “I don’t stay home. I go shopping with my friends. I play mahjong on Wednesdays with my friends. I do what I want to do, and when I’m tired, I stop.”

By using resources such as the International Myeloma Foundation, which provides sufferers with education, support, research and advocacy, Brown has been able to fight for the chance to live her life the way she wants.

“I told my doctor about six months ago, ‘I’m gonna prove you wrong,’” Brown said. “And he looked back at me and said: ‘You already have.’”

Tony Naccarato, BHS '63, Passed Away November 9, 2019

"It is with sadness that I share the passing of Tony Naccarato from the Burbank High class of 1963. His brave struggle with cancer ended on November 9, 2019. Rest In Peace!"

Posted by Smith Brothers Hobby Center on Facebook on November 10, 2019
"It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our friend and colleague, Tony Naccarato. Tony passed Saturday morning after a long battle with cancer. It is hard to put things into perspective, as Tony was one of the "good guys," where things like this should not happen. But it was part of the big plan and it is easy to point out all the good he did with his life. Tony was a standout guy, who put others first. He dedicated his life to serving others- his family, his country, his friends, and his passion for hobbies. We lost count how many times Tony took a youth aside to teach him or her the lessons of flight and r/c aircraft. Those youth are now responsible adults, who are taking up careers in aerospace, engineering, and successful walks of life. It all started with a gentle, helping hand, a hand touching another on a remote control. Tony's passion for all-things-air and helping others will leave a huge mark on our society. There are few out there like him and he will be sorely missed. Smith Brothers would like to wish his son Ryan and his family members our deepest condolences during this difficult time. We loved Tony with all our hearts and we will let his legacy live on at our store. He taught us so much with his generosity, patience, and compassion. Rest in peace Tony. We love you."
