Maryann Giessinger Smith passed away August 7, 2016 after a very long battle with cancer. She always had a very positive outlook on everything, including her illness. In recent months she realized her time was limited, and told her family that she knew she has had a wonderful life, and that she was ready to go when her time came. I’m pretty certain she was BHS ‘59. Maryann was 75. She was born in May of 1941. Maryann had lived for many years in Morongo Valley in the Palm Desert area. Her siblings are Don Giessinger, BHS ‘61, Sherri Giessinger Coleman, BHS ‘67, and Valerie Giessinger Scott, BHS ‘71. Maryann passed away at the home of her brother, Don, and his wife, Janey (also BHS ‘61), in Atascadero. Their 93 year old mother, Jeannie Giessinger Cascio, is still living on her own in Santa Clarita. Maryann leaves a son, Shawn Padovich, and his four children, along with all the rest of her very large family who mourn her now.

"This weekend there is a celebration of life for Maryann and Janey (my sister in law, also a BHS grad) wrote this along with a poem Maryann wanted read at her funeral. This she wanted way before she got sick. I will send in another email. Could you post on BHS Memorial page if you would be so kind.

Norma Beckett Johnson, BHS '45 (1927-2016)

Norma Jeanee Beckett Johnson

Ventura, CA

Norma was born on January 12, 1927 to Orville Beckett and Marjorie Smithson Beckett in Hollywood, CA. She passed peacefully at home on July 24, 2016. During her long life she was a brilliant student, a beloved teacher, a dedicated friend, and most of all, a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.

Norma met the love of her life, Bob Johnson, in 7th grade at John Burroughs Junior High School in Burbank. They graduated from Burbank High School in 1945, married in 1948, and enjoyed a loving and close union of over 68 years.

Norma and Bob both graduated from Occidental College in 1951; Norma began her teaching career at Culver City Junior High School shortly thereafter. She left teaching after four years to raise her two daughters, Valerie and Vickie, and returned to the classroom in 1971 at Jordan Junior High School in Burbank, where she covered such diverse subjects as English, math, and drama, always inspiring her students and forming lifelong friendships with her colleagues. Following retirement and a move to Dana Point in 1983, Norma and Bob both taught for several years at St. Margaret's Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano.

Norma was an extraordinary mother, and both girls fondly remember a childhood filled with love and laughter. She was involved in PTA and Ponytail softball, as well as being an amazing cook, seamstress, bridge player, Brownie leader, and loyal friend to all who knew her.

Upon the birth of their two grandsons, Norma and Bob relocated to Ventura, and Norma lavished her love on both boys as they grew up. Whether it was celebrating birthdays, cheering them on at countless sporting events, or cuddling up and reading a book together, she adored being their Nana.

Norma is survived by her husband Bob; daughters Valerie Johnson and Victoria Costigan; son-in-law Carl Costigan; and beloved grandsons Robert and Will Costigan. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held Monday, August 8th at 11:00 am at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road in Ventura.

Norma's family would like to extend special thanks to Livingston Memorial Hospice Care for their loving treatment of Norma in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LMVNA, or to a charity of your choice .

Terry Cooper, BHS '66 & Linda Maxam, BHS '68, Both Passed in 2015

Today we received the following sad news from BHS ’66 classmates, Jim Naugle & Paul Kane:

Terry Cooper passed away on May 6, 2015. The cause of death is unknown. He was born September 7, 1947 and was retired from being a machinist at Lockheed for 27 years.

His first wife was Linda Maxam, BHS ’68 (sister of Larry Maxam, BHS ’66) and they had one daughter. Linda passed away on September 13, 2015. Terry also had a son from a second marriage.

Leon Keddington, BHS '66 (1947-2015)

Leon Keddington retired from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in 2000 and moved to Payson, Arizona, with his wife of 28 years, Elizabeth.

It was while on a cruise to Corzumel, Mexico, that Leon died of a heart attack. His wife told Linda Mazur that he had COPD and regretted that he started smoking.

Leon is also survived by three children.

Volunteer, A University Campus in PaysonLeon Keddington is retired from the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power after a successful 30 plus year career.

Most of Mr. Keddington’s career was spent in the power operations side of the business, culminating with his position as the head of the Transmission Division. In this capacity, Mr. Keddington was responsible for all aspects of the high voltage power grid, including more than three hundred employees and an annual budget of several hundred million dollars.

Mr. Keddington currently serves as president of the Chaparral Pines Homeowners Association.

Highlights of Mr. Keddington’s career include helping to position his department to be competitive in the electric deregulation market in California, both in power sales and transmission access issues.

Greg Hansen, BHS '66, Passed Oct 17, 2014

We received the following news from Bob Garnett:

Greg Hansen, my tennis partner, passed away October 17, 2014, just after retiring and moving to North Carolina.

He worked for many years at Gelson’s and was a Department Manager in their North Hollywood store.

Greg's brother, Mike, graduated from BHS in 1970.

Virginia Clausen Pokorny, BHS '65 (1947-2016)

Today we received sad news from Angela Franchino Pokorny, BHS '64, that her sister-in-law, Virginia (Ginny Lynn) Clausen, had passed away unexpectantly last week. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers....

Virginia "Ginny" Lynn Pokorny
August 28,1947 - June 21, 2016

Virginia "Ginny" Lynn Pokorny of Sonora went to be with our Lord June 21, 2016 surrounded by her family. Beloved daughter of the late Joe and Marjorie Clausen and brother Jerry. She was the loving wife of Tony Pokorny and mother of Weston and Jason, grandmother to Alexis, Daniella, Lukas, Tony and Kimberly. She is survived by brother Larry Clausen (June) of Fillmore California, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Burbank, California Ginny also graduated from Burbank High School. In May of 1966 she married Tony Pokorny and had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1979 the family moved to Oakland, California where she worked at several different companies in accounting and administrative support until retiring in 2003 and relocating to Sonora, California. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed camping, hiking and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed touring the United States and several foreign countries. Her favorite was a recent trip to Israel, Jordan and Turkey. She was so happy to visit the places where Jesus and the apostles preached the gospel.

Ginny had a beautiful smile, loving heart and gentle spirit. She loved life and was moved to volunteer at the Foothill Pregnancy Center in Sonora. The center supports young pregnant women and young mothers in need. She managed the "Mommy Store" and the clothing donations. Seeing the mothers and their babies in the store was a very rewarding and joyful time in her life. She loved the Lord, spending time praying and reading her bible daily. Ginny touched our hearts with her beautiful smile and calm presence. We will always love you and cherish the wonderful memories you left for us.

Memorials may be made in Ginny's name to the Foothill Pregnancy Center of Sonora, 427 N. Highway 49, Suite101, Sonora, CA 95370.

With heavy heart I am sharing with you that Julie Hornbeck (Feenstra) died the beginning of this month. She had just retired and lived in Mexico. She was very happy and did not suffer. So sad I was suppose to visit her next winter.

Julie had two sons, Kreigen and Kyler, and this is one of them.



She was a nurse, lived in Canada in Summer and Mexico in winter. Had just retired to live in Mexico. She had lots of friends. I believe she had a heart attack. She was found by a friend. She was always fun and very young at heart.
I will miss her
