Frank Sullivan, BHS '48 (1930-2016)

Frank Sullivan, a two-time All-Star with the Red Sox and a member of the team’s Hall of Fame, died Tuesday, four days before what would have been his 86th birthday. The cause was complications from pneumonia.

Sullivan was 90-80 with a 3.47 ERA for the Sox from 1953-60. He played parts of 11 seasons in the majors, winning 97 games. Sullivan led the Red Sox in ERA from 1954-57 and was their Opening Day starter three times.

The Red Sox signed the 6-foot-6-inch righthander in 1948 out of Southern California. After a two-year stint in the Army, Sullivan made his major league debut in ’53 and was in the rotation a year later.

Sullivan took the loss in the 1955 All-Star Game in Milwaukee, giving up a walkoff home run to Stan Musial in the 12th inning after throwing three scoreless innings. He was 18-13 with a 2.91 ERA that season and led the American League with 260 innings.

Traded to the Phillies after the 1960 season for Gene Conley, Sullivan left the Red Sox ranked fifth in team history with 201 starts.

Sullivan spent the last 50 years living in Hawaii and worked at a number of golf courses. The team said he last visited Fenway Park in 2014.

Sullivan is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Mike, son Mark, daughter-in-law Leihina, and four grandchildren.

I am sad to say my grandfather, BHS Class of 39 passed away last week. Richard was born and raised in Burbank. He also served in the navy and Pearl Harbor. He and his wife Betty raised two boys, Richard and Robert who graduated from Burroughs in the 60s. My brother Todd and I, Richard graduated from Burbank High in the 80s. He will be missed.

Ruth Bolen Estoup, BHS '70 (1952-2016)

RUTH ANN BOLEN ESTOUP
June 27, 1952 ~ January 17, 2016

Ruth passed away on Sunday, January 17, in Oregon. She had won a battle with breast cancer 18 years ago, but just two months ago in November she was diagnosed with the same form of cancer, but this time it had already metastasized to her spine and stomach. I had a number of e-mails back and forth with her in December regarding the upcoming BHS reunion of her older brother, but I had no idea about her current illness. Joyce Starleaf received a Christmas card from Ruth last month, but no mention about her being seriously ill. On Sunday Ruth's life-long close friend, Jennie Burke Schneider, phoned Joyce to let her know the very sad news of Ruth's passing.

Ruth Ann Bolen grew up at 825 Bethany Rd. in Burbank. She attended Emerson Elementary, John Muir, and BHS with all of us. While in school in Burbank she was a member of the Burbank Y Girl's Club, The Thoactleans, along with several that remained her closest friends throughout life. In the early 1970's Ruth moved to Oregon, which is where she has lived since, and where she passed away. She had lived with her family in Milton Freewater, Oregon for many, many years until now. Ruth worked in the banking industry for many years, and had retired within the past couple of years. The last BHS '70 Reunion that Ruth attended was our 2010 Reunion, which happened to be held on her birthday, June 27, 2010. She and her husband were on a trip to Europe this past June at the time of our 2015 class reunion.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Tom Estoup, her son Matthew Estoup (age 39), and her daughter Rebecca Estoup (age 36). She is also survived by her sister, Barbara (BHS '69) of Southern California, and her brother, Dennis (BHS '66) of Florida.

We just heard from Claudia Hoffman that her brother Neil Hoffman, passed away this morning (1/18/16)
Neil was in the BHS Class of 1961. We have no other details at this time...

Deceased Classmate of BHS Class of '66: Jarvy Copeland

Linda Schuster Mazur asked that I post this email from Jim McGillis and I added the photos...



Jarvy Copeland was an interesting kid. He was several years older than the rest of us. His father was an Air Force pilot or crew-member, who died either in World War II or sometime thereafter. For years, Jarvy wore his father's old leather bomber jacket with pride. Once, he personally told me about his father and the jacket that he wore. This was thirty years before ragged bomber jackets became hip and cool fashion items. Without knowing it, Jarvy was a fashion leader, way ahead of his time. I remember hearing about his death from friends or reading about in the old Burbank Review.

In loving memory of Jarvis Glenn Copeland, Jr. An avid fisherman/outdoors man and resident of Sacramento passed away on May 16, 2014 due to cancer. His love for animals, nature, and people will be remembered by many. 

A memorial of his life is to be held June 8, 2014, 11 a.m. at 315 V. Street, Sacramento, California. It was his wish that all attended in color or a splash of purple.
