The Burbank Bike Angels, a group of volunteers who restore bicycles for needy youth in the community, delivered close to 150 bikes to the Salvation Army on Monday.

Lt. Kari Rudd of the Salvation Army Burbank Corps Community Center said it is the third year bikes have been donated to the center. The first year, about 10 bikes were collected. That figure grew to 67 last year, and then to 146 this year.

The city of Burbank collects the bikes — usually second-hand — from the public, while members of the police and fire unions donate money for safety equipment and parts. The Salvation Army and other volunteers help with refurbishing the bikes, Rudd said.

Cathy did you or John know Dave Campbell? He was in the class of '65 but did not graduate with us because he moved away mid year. His Father was the Pastor of the Presbyterian Church across from BHS until they moved. Dave passed away this morning of a heart attack.

So sad to hear that. I found this photo in the 1963 Ceralbus. You guys would have been in the 10th grade. Couldn't find his photo in the 1964 or 1965 Ceralbuses... Let me know if they are planning services in the area so that we can post it.

I just talked to Jennifer Todd. Yes, I was correct that Jay Campbell was the founding pastor of Bethany Presbyterian at Glenoaks and Tulare. She was sorry to hear that his son passed away today. She isn't sure if Jay is still living or not. As said earlier, if he has died it is within the last four years from when I saw him in October of 2007 at the dedication service for Calvary Chapel Burbank who now owns the former Bethany Presbyterian property. At that time his wife was still living, too. They both looked great, even for people younger than they actually were. I think Jay was around 96 at that time. He preached a short message, along with his remarks for Calvary Chapel's dedication! Possibly Dave was with them that evening, since I remember some of their family was with them and were introduced. In 2007 Jay and his wife lived in Orange County, I think Huntington Beach maybe. I believe Bethany Presbyterian was founded and built about 1948. So, if Jay Campbell left there in 1964 or 1965 he was the pastor at Bethany for 16 or 17 years.

Mike and I had a blast presenting the Burbankia slide show at the Buena Vista Library on 9 July 2011, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the city's incorporation. That was part one. Part two was presented by Mike in August. My wife took a video of the July presentation; I have uploaded it to youtube in seven segments. It's about 90 minutes in all. There is no video of the August presentation. Enjoy!

Karry Ann McEntire Hughes, BHS '66 (1948-1985)

Parents: Vernon Lee McEntire (1930–2018) and Joyce Yvonne Duke McEntire (1930–2018)

Today, we received the following from Thomas and Sharon McEntire via Alan Landros:

Thom's sister, Karry Ann McEntire Hughes, class of 1966, was born January 30, 1948, at Queen of Angeles hospital in Los Angeles. She moved to Burbank when she was 13 and went to John Muir and BHS. She married Michael Hughes from Texas and they had one son, Donald Hughes. In the late 70's they moved to Oregon.

Tragically, at age 37, Karry was killed in a motorcyle accident on July 16, 1985 in Salem, Oregon. Her husband, Mike, was driving the bike and a car did not see them. It turned left right in front of them and Mike didn't even have time to break. He was seriously injured but survived and unfortunately for Karry, she was thrown from the bike, broke her neck and died instantly.

It has been a very long time since we connected. We wish it were under happier circumstances that we are sending out this "Special Loop", which actually continues to be on hiatus...

We received the following news from our friend and classmate, Mickey DePalo '64...

Hi Pam and Jon,
Another member of Burbank High, class of 1964, has passed away. Mark Cutter passed away on December 5th, 2011. Mark has been living in Mariposa, California, near Fresno, for the past several years. He and his wonderful wife, Karen, called it their dream home. They were very happy living there, and made periodic trips to Burbank to see friends and Mark's sister, Carol Finkle, BHS, class of '62. Mark was a VERY PROUD Vietnam Veteran. Mark was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, with a Silver Star, three Soldiers Medals, and a Purple Heart among his many decorations. Mark was an outstanding example of a Vietnam veteran who came home, raised a family, and made many great contributions to his community. Mark cared for the welfare of not only veterans, but also for the welfare of everyone he encountered. Mark was also a valuable member of the City of Burbank Veterans Commemorative Committee. He and his wife Karen came up with the idea of shipping items to the men and women serving overseas soon after 9/11. They came up with the name Hands Across the Battlefield. The program has met with a great deal of success and through the generosity of the Burbank residents and surrounding communities, there has been over 40 tons of health and comfort items sent overseas. This would never have happened if not for Mark and Karen.

There will be a memorial service for Mark at the McCambridge Park War Memorials located at Amherst and San Fernando Road in Burbank, on Sunday December 18, 2011, at 1:00 p.m.

I ask everyone to keep Mark, his wife Karen, his children and grandchildren, his sister, Carol, and his entire family in their prayers.

Jon and I certainly have lots of happy memories of Mark. He was our building inspector when we added on to our home over 25 years ago...He was in the elevator at St. Jo's Hospital, bringing a new baby home, when we were bringing our twins home. Marc was at so many of the Veterans' Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies at McCambridge over the years...He worked tirelessly to make sure our troops were remembered with packages from "Hands Across the Battlefield"...He was a "Hometown Hero", for sure...

Those of you in the Burbank vicinity, please take time to stop by the McCambridge Park War Memorials on Sunday, Dec. 18th, 1p.m. to remember and honor our friend, Mark Cutter and to pay our respects to his family.

Jon and I also want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Blessed Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year...and to also remind you who have, for one reason or another, neglected to attend your Burbank High School Reunions...Plan to go to your next one...We are losing so many of our dear friends...don't wait until it is too late.

Karen Bond Flanagan, BHS '69 Passed Away 11/18/11

Karen Bond Flanagan, BHS '69 passed away on November 18, 2011 due to cancer. Karen's husband, Jim Flanagan, is from the John Burroughs class of '69. Karen is survived by Jim, one son, and one daughter. Karen attended Thomas Jefferson, John Muir, and BHS.

Brad Bartsch, BHS '69 Passed Away 11/15/11

Brad Bartsch passed away November 15, 2011 due to liver failure. Brad's brother, Brian Bartsch, BHS '70, passed away October 9, 2005 at age 53. While growing up in Burbank they lived on Hilton Dr. They attended Thomas Jefferson Elementary, John Muir, and BHS. Both of them lived in Lakeview Terrace until their deaths.

Joan Miller Gordon, BHS '69 Passed Away

Just received the sad news from Guy Gingell, BHS '66, that Joan Miller Gordon, BHS '69, passed away last night, November 30, 2011, after a long illness.

Joan went all the way through school in Burbank at Thomas Jefferson Elementary, John Muir, and BHS.
Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers which include Joan's sisters, Joyce Miller, BHS '67, and Gail Miller, BHS '65.
