CLAYTON, CA — Carolyn (Carrie) Marie Stanoff died May 5, 2020.

Carrie had been diagnosed with glioblastoma (brain cancer) in December 2015. Carrie fought bravely and remained positive during her treatment. Initially, medical professionals’ prognosis was 14 months, but she lived 5½ years.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Carol Hemmerdinger Zolan's passing in July 2023, as conveyed by her daughter-in-law Maise McCormack. Carol (BHS Class of 1966) will be remembered as a gracious, intelligent, and beautiful person.

Jennifer Dale Schatz
This makes me so sad. Carol was a neighbor down the street and we went to elementary, junior high and high school together. We were in the same Y club (the Derby’s) and spent many crazy years at the Y and at camp! She and I also went to Youth in Government in Sacramento. Don’t know if many knew that she was quite and artist. Her late husband was an artist and they owned the Zolan gallery. We lost touch over the years….😢So many happy memories of her. Rest well my friend.❤️

Cathy Coyle
Oh no. I’m so sad. She was our Rank Leader on Drill Team in 1966. She was a wonderful & very special friend to all of us. Carol is on the far left of our Rank 5 Group photo taken at our Drill Team Banquet.

Jennifer Dale Schatz her brother, Bill was a artist too. She went to the College of the Seas for a couple of years. She fell in love with a fellow student, I went to their engagement party. But heard later they cancelled their marriage plans. Sandy Humphrey was a good friend of hers, she kept in touch with her for years. But then too lost contact. Beautiful person inside & out. 🌸

She’s the first girl I ever asked to go to the show with me, as I had big crush on her, she broke my heart when she said no! Funny how we remember the past so well! RIP Carol ❤️

Laura Slonecker Jolls posted on Facebook today this sad note...

I have been waiting to see if family would post here, but since no one has, it breaks my heart to have to share the news of the passing of Jake De Binion…another Bulldog from the Class of ‘83.

Jake’s brother reached out to me on October 7th, letting me know Jake had passed the night before. Jake has been my brother’s great friend since their school days.

Not sure if they know the cause, Jake had had a stroke a few years back, but was doing good. Jake had so much love in his heart for his family and friends…for his Dodgers…a passion for good food…for music…for life.

God Bless you
Jake De Binion🙏💙

Doug Freeman, BHS '66 (1948-2024)

Douglas Idell Freeman Jr
November 9, 1948 – October 21, 2024

We just received the very sad news that Doug Freeman recently passed away from stomach cancer.

His wife Esperanza wrote,Doug was diagnosed with stomach cancer in March 2024. When he went to the doctor he was told that he had stage 4 cancer and had metastased in the liver and lung.”

Doug was the son of Douglas and Pauline Freeman. He and his older sister Pat and younger brother Lee grew up in Burbank California and he graduated from Burbank High School in 1966.

Please keep his fmaily in your prayers.

Doug is 3rd boy from the right middle row

I personally knew the Freeman kids mostly from Miller Elementary School in Burbank and I have many fun, crazy and happy memories from those days. They each had great personalites and were all very talented.

Sadly, we lost Pat in 1972 and Lee in 2010 and each is greatly missed by many...

MEMORIES FROM PHIL YOUNG, BHS '65

Remembering Doug Freeman

Doug was one year behind me at Burbank High School, and though his sister Pat was a classmate of mine, I got to know him better through his younger brother Lee (who was married to my sister Chris). Doug, Lee & I shared an old wood frame house on East Verdugo Ave. after I got out of the Navy (April '70). Doug (aka Mellwood Ditworthy) had a unique and infectious sense of humor: he certainly could make me laugh. I've never known anyone like him (and I'm a retired federal Special Agent that has seen a vast array of personalities and behaviors). Though he had this light side, he could also take-care-of-business. This was exemplified when his Mother & Sister were tragically slain on Christmas morning in '72. As I recall, Doug stepped up and was a major planner for their memorial service.

Doug and I also shared a bond as proud "Uncles" to Chris & Lee's son Evan (Freeman) Erickson. He and I live on through our progeny, Evan and his children (and grandchild), and our many beautiful memories we have of Doug long after his departure from this temporal world.

This is a solemn time. Time to mourn, reflect and rejoice that we knew and loved Doug.

My prayers are for his peace and tranquility...

Judy Weatherwax Burke, BHS '58 (1940-2013)

Judith Ann Weatherwax Burke
April 10, 1940 - May 20, 2013

FIND A GRAVE Link

"When we are crushed like grapes, we cannot think of the wine we will become. We need to be reminded that our cup of sorrow is also our cup of joy, and that one day we will be able to taste the joy as fully as we now taste the sorrow." ~ Henri Nouwen

Our beloved mother, and our father's wife of 51 years, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013. Her husband and two daughters were at her side when she left the world she loved and enriched.

Born in April 1940 in Glendale, Calif., Judy was the oldest of three sisters, with whom she was very close and for decades shared an annual "three-sisters vacation" at the Little Sister Resort in Sister Bay, Wis. These trips brought her great joy and were the highlight of her year as they were filled with late night laughter, endless craft projects and friendly competitions at the paintball shooting range or baseball batting cages.

Our parents met in high school when they were 15 years old. They married on July 28, 1962, and settled in San Luis Obispo in 1968, where they raised their family and watched their daughters grow up in the community they loved. Mom and Dad's life of 58 years together included many wonderful family vacations, lots of movies and Sunday crosswords, and in recent years, unforgettable world travels.

Our mother's talents and accomplishments and examples of her kind nature cannot possibly be condensed into a short sketch such as this; however, her passion for designing and making beautiful quilts, her amazing piano playing, the trips she took around the world with our dad, and the pride she felt for her daughter's and grandchildren's achievements would be the starting point of outlining what was important to her.

Mom was also a lifelong learner - after her children were grown, she went back to school. After finishing her bachelor's degree at Stephens College, she continued on to earn two master's degrees from Skidmore College. Our mother was an active member in her community and enriched the lives of others through service with the Monday Club, Civic Ballet Performing Arts Center, Law Wives Group, and many other volunteer positions throughout the years.

Judy leaves behind her husband, Jeffrey Burke; two daughters, Brooksley (Burke) Williams and Meredith (Burke) Lawler, sisters, Marjorie Baldwin and Nancy Carlson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Lee and Robert Chandler Weatherwax.

As our mother was especially passionate about women's education and its vital role in shaping young women to become well-rounded, compassionate members of their community, contributions in her memory can be made to your favorite charity that supports education or the arts. Or, in lieu of a charitable contribution, consider also simply "paying it forward" with an act of kindness toward another, as our mother did on a regular basis. She knew how far an encouraging word and a warm smile could travel, and it would bring us great comfort to know her legacy of kindness, good will, and wonderful humor will endure.
