"Very sorry to report that Donald G. Bilyeu, BHS Class of 1945, died yesterday (7/26/19) in his home in Sandy, Utah. He was 92. A veteran of World War II, he is survived by two daughters, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren."

Sadly we report the passing of another BHS Bulldog, Ronnie Garner BHS 1962...The following was posted by his daughter, Kelli Garner...

"It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I report the passing of my father, Ronnie Garner. Ronnie passed away last night in Henderson, Nevada after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

"Ronnie had a distinguished law enforcement career spanning over 30 years across three agencies culminating as Chief of Police for Arcadia PD, from where he retired in 1999. He was a proud Vietnam veteran and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to his cherished wife, Paula, for over 50 years.

"He leaves an indelible legacy of admiration and respect with those who both knew and loved him, and will be deeply missed.

"Funeral services are pending and details will be posted when they become available."

Ronnie will be missed by so many besides his loving family. He was always a "ray of sunshine" with a wonderful sense of humor.

May God Bless him and his wife (Paula) and his loving Family...

"Today is the eleventh anniversary of the passing of my lovely wife, Arlene. Arlene Sinardi and I were married in June of 1964. In March of 1965 we were blessed with our first born, Gary, following in 1969 our daughter, Kim. Arlene took to being a mother as naturally as anyone I have ever seen. Some 27 years later, when our first grandson was born she took to that experience with love and much fun. After living in Louisiana for 11 years we moved to Oceanside, California. She was near the rest of her grandsons, and it seems we visited every weekend. She left behind her husband Mike, son Gary and daughter Kim her husband Mike Crowe, grandsons Tony Taylor, Ryan and Scott Crowe. Her brother Steve and a host of nieces and nephews. Arlene graduated from BHS in the class of '63."

We are very sorry for you loss, Mike.

BHS Class 1970 Reunion - June 28, 2020

ATTENTION: BURBANK HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1970

The date and location of our 50 Year Reunion in 2020 has now been selected. Mark the date, and please begin planning around it so you will be with the rest of us next year!

SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 2020 FROM 6:00 P.M. TO MIDNIGHT
CASTAWAY BURBANK - MOUNTAIN VIEW ROOM

This will be our third reunion in a row in the Mountain View Room. Once again it will be a buffet dinner. We will be inviting our teachers again, who have been with us at the last two reunions in 2010 and 2015.

As we get closer to June of 2020 other gatherings for that reunion weekend will be decided, possibly such as we've had in 2010 and 2015 with a Saturday evening get-together and a Monday morning breakfast.

Please help us to be able to begin the planning and preparation by sending your check to us before August 31, 2019. Please send $85.00 for one person or $170.00 for two people. The amount per person will increase September 1, 2019 and after, which should be a minimal increase. As soon as we calculate the total price that it will be per person after the September 1 date we will let everyone know. I will be sending an e-mail also, which will give details of how to make your check out, and where to mail it. If you don't receive the e-mail please send me your current e-mail address so it can be added to our list.

Castaway Burbank has an agreement with the new Hilton Garden Inn for a hotel group rate. Once we get details for a group rate we will pass along that information as well. Hilton Garden Inn is located at the corner of San Fernando Blvd. and Verdugo Ave. in Burbank, just two blocks from the Holiday Inn that we previously used.

Next June 28th will be here before we know it! Please spread the word to all of your friends from BHS '70 so no one will miss this information!

Colleen Ann Anderson, BHS '65 (1946-1988)

"My Cousin Colleen was born March 3, 1946. She passed away in a Sun Valley Hospital in 1988. Her name was Colleen Ann Anderson (Gosling). She was divorced from Kyle Gosling. She had two daughters, Jamie and Helen Kennedy from her first marriage to James Kennedy.

"Eight weeks after she passed, her daughter Helen was in a car accident, hit the guardrail on the 134 before the 5 North. She sustained head injuries and passed away after a couple weeks in the hospital. She passed at 19 years old leaving behind a 16 year old sister Jamie. It was devastating."

"Jamie did get married and had two daughters. Jamie was not well and she separated herself from the family. When she passed away, my parents and I went to Jamie's Celebration of Life about 15 yrs ago. She was young. Her Grandma Helen, Colleen's mother and my dad’s sister, is 94 and lives in Ohio with Colleen's sister, Donna Blaney. Very painful for her to remember the past."

"Colleen was also survived by her father, Bob who has since passed away, and her brother Bobby Anderson who lives in Nevada."

I have fun memories as kids hanging out with Sara and her fun-loving cousin, Colleen. RIP Colleen.

Eileen was born on August 1, 1946 and passed away on Monday, November 3, 2008.

"Eileen was my neighbor for 17 years here in Burbank across the street from my office. We were fortunate enough to strike up a conversation with her one day and ended up hiring her to come work with us. She became like a big sister to me and an extended family member. Her drive and humor were so important to my husband and to me. I will miss her quick sense of humor, her unwavering loyalty, all my girlie hugs and the many hours we spent fixing the world together or bitching about it. We agreed on alot of things but mostly just wanted the time off to play with her beloved doggie Angie. She was a stinker, a thinker, and a big time do it dont talk about it. When I start to feel sorry for myself, I think of my Eileen and see her standing in front of me with her little fists on her hips looking at me with that,"what IS your problem? You dont have cancer and youre not homeless!!"
I love you Eileen. See you later on."

"I got to spend 2 awesome years working with Eileen. She was a stubborn but very loving lady. Always took time out to see how you were doing, or listen if need be. She was definetly Grama Eileen to me. And i miss her very much. I can't believe its been a year without her jokes. "Wierd Wednesdays" and quick wit. I still miss her."

Memorial services will be held May 13, 1970, for LCJG Brian E. Bullock of Burbank who was killed in an aircraft carrier accident.

Rites will be held for Brian Edward Bullock 23, of 800 Victoria Place, Burbank, on May 13 at 7:30 pm at Glendale Presbyterian Church, 219 E Harvard St. Lt Bullock was killed April 23 while stationed aboard the aircraft USS Lexington. Memorial services were held Sunday in the Naval Chapel in Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida, for the Glendale born flier.

A catapult launching his plane reportedly malfunctioned during flight operations. Navy officials said he was able to eject from the plane but rescuers aboard the carrier were not able to find his body.

He is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Frank Bullock, and a sister Beverly, BHS '67.

Bullock was a graduate of Burbank High School and had attended Glendale College for two years. He completed his studies at San Fernando Valley State College, receiving a Bachelor's degree in business administration.

He received his commission as an ensign in the Naval Reserves upon graduation from college. The family has stated that contributions may be made to the Brian Edward Bullock Memorial Fund at Glendale Presbyterian Church.

Dave Teigland, BHS '64 (1946-2017)

Salem - David Ames Teigland (DAT), 71, died Sunday, July 30, at the Farmington Square memory care facility in Salem.

David was born on April 26th, 1946 in Fort Lewis, Washington to Janet and Mads Teigland, while Mads finished his World War II service with the Army Corps of Engineers. Mads was a proud immigrant from Norway who instilled a love of country and service in David that carried on throughout his life.

David grew up in Burbank, California, where he developed a love for the Dodgers, the sun, rock and roll, Norengish (a blending of Norwegian, English, and Spanish) and 1957 Chevrolets. David graduated from the University of Redlands in 1968 and spent the majority of his working life as an accountant for various businesses in California, Washington, and Oregon. He spent as much of his non-working life as he could playing golf, buying gifts for his wife at Boucher's Jewelry, and teasing those close to him.

In 1982, David and his wife Joan (whom he called "Hundred" instead of "Honey") moved to Keizer with their family. David became an active member of the Keizer Rotary club, continuing an affiliation with the service organization that he began in California in the mid-1970's. David lived by Rotary's motto of "Service Above Self" and enjoyed working on Rotary projects in Keizer and later as a transplant to Sun Lakes, Arizona. David was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salem as well as St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, also of Salem.

Although David was in declining health for many years, he rarely wavered from the positive. His genuine reply to almost any question (How's the weather? How's the food? How are you feeling?) was "Perfect!" David's strong faith, wry humor, and devotion to family kept him grounded.

David is survived by his wife of 43 years, Hundred (Joan), as well as his daughter Terrie March and step-son John Divelbiss, four grandchildren (Kiya, Sarah, Logan, and Zoe) and four great-grandchildren.

A service for David Teigland will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church (3295 Ladd Ave NE, Salem 97301) on Thursday, August 10th at 11:00 AM.

Lois Norton Mertens, BHS '69 (1951-2019)

Obituary for Lois Jeanne Mertens

Lois Jeanne Mertens, born October 3, 1951 in Burbank, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 in her home. It was an unexpected loss because Lois was only 67 years old. She lived with Donald Mertens, her husband of 35 years, in Laguna Niguel, California. She was born to Darrell and Joan Norton (passed) and had one sibling, Don Norton (passed).

Lois lived in Burbank until she met her first husband, Joe English, and then moved to Miami, Florida. They had three children, Kim, Joe, and Jason which she loved dearly. After her divorce, Lois and the children moved back to California to live with her brother, Don, and his family. Lois later settled in Glendale, California to start her life as a single mother, working very hard to provide for her children. She always made time to give lots of love and care to her kids.

Eventually she met Don Mertens in “Parents without Partners” (PWP) in 1983 and this is where her life truly became an adventure. Don and Lois became very socially active building many great memories for themselves and their children. This included lots of camping and water ski trips with other PWP families where many good times were had. Lois became very athletic and joined competitive volleyball and softball teams with Don. Later in life with an “empty nest”, they went on trips all over the world. Lois’ favorite was Hawaii (several times) with Italy a close second.

Lois is survived by all three of her children all of whom she was super close to. Her oldest child, Kim Silvera, lives in Manhattan Beach, California and has two children named Jacob and Jessie along with her husband, Alby Silvera. Lois’ son, Joe English, lives in Parker, Colorado and has two children named Kaylynn and Mackayla along with his wife, Jennifer. Lois’ youngest son, Jason English, lives in Westchester, California. Being married to Don, Lois gained two children. The older is Jeff Mertens who lives in Sacramento, California and has a daughter named Jeneva along with his wife, Jennifer. The younger is Jill Desruisseau who lives in St. Augustine, Florida and has three children named Zachery, Cameron, and Morgan along with her husband, Steve.

Don and Lois created many great memories for all of their five children and eight grandchildren and were always involved in their lives. Lois also loved and spoiled her three dogs, Tahoe (black lab), Nakita (chocolate lab), and her current dog, Whitney (yellow lab).

Lois became an Executive Secretary at KPMG before retiring in 2000. She then did volunteer work at a local hospital. She was very involved with AA meetings and made many friends there in Laguna Niguel.

Lois was a beautiful person inside and out. She was supportive and kind and made friends very easily with her free spirit. Most people who knew Lois would say she was silly and fun and would always make them laugh. Her kids called her the “crazy lady” because of her usually funny comments and actions. She always had lots of energy until the last months of her life when her health was failing. Despite this she stayed positive and made the most out of every day. Lois was an awesome mother and grandmother, as well as an incredible wife. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.

There will be two separate “Celebration of Life” open houses for Lois as follows:
• Saturday, July 27th from 12-6 at Kim’s house in Manhattan Beach, CA.
• Saturday, August 24th from 12-6 at Don’s house in Laguna Niguel, CA.
Family and friends are invited to come to either one. Please contact Kim or Don for details.

Carol Johnson Oliver, BHS '66 (1948-2004)

Carol Oliver, 56, of Grayson, lost her vigilant battle to kidney cancer on Saturday, August 28th, 2004. An open memorial will be held on Friday, September 3rd, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the Grayson United Methodist Church; reception to immediately follow memorial service.

Carol Marie Johnson was born on June 25, 1948 in Glendale, Ca. She attended grade school, K-8th Grade in Burbank, and then attended Burbank High. Carol graduated high school in 1966, and nursing school in 1968 and relocated to the city of Los Angeles. Carol lived in Burbank, California from 1948 to 1969.

From 1969 to 1975, she resided in the Los Angeles area. The next 23 years, Carol lived in Alpine, Ca. from 1975 until 1993 when she would move to Georgia. During her time in San Diego, Carol attended the University of Phoenix to obtain her bachelors in science degree. In no time at all, Carol was accepted into Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Within three years, Carol had earned her Masters degree. After graduating from Emory, Carol came back to Alpine in 1997 and got her first job as a Nurse Practitioner at Sharps Memorial.

Carol's passions were horses and photography. Although Carol truly enjoyed San Diego, she maintained her deep love for the south. As time went on, Carol's desire to return to Georgia became a reality. In 1998, she met the man of her dreams, Tom Oliver, and began her life with him in a special place called Grayson, Georgia. She practiced medicine at Emory Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, GA until the time of her illness.

Carol Oliver was survived by; husband, Thomas Oliver, mother, Violet Johnson, sister, Sharon Averett, 9 beautiful children and 7 grandchildren.

Jo Ann Fitzhugh Mumby, BHS '66 (1948-2012)

Beloved wife and mother, Jo Ann Mumby passed away July 7, 2012 in Fairhope, AL.

Born in Burbank, California, she grew up as Jo Ann Fitzhugh and went to Burbank High School. Jo Ann enjoyed reading, traveling, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with her family and many friends.

Jo Ann is survived by husband, Jay Mumby; son, Doug McKnight; step-sons, Jason Mumby and Erik Mumby; brother, Carl Carlson; and extended family, plus the many foster kids Jo Ann and Jay cared for and loved so much. We will miss her dearly.

A visitation will be held at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills on Friday July 13th. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday morning July 14th. Call Forest Lawn for time and location, 800-204-3131. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Southern Cancer Institute or Thomas Hospital Foundation.

January 22, 1951 - October 11, 2012

Robert (Bob) J.M. Cross, 61, of Flagstaff, AZ died peacefully at home on October 11th, 2012 of a T Cell Lymphoma. He was born on January 22, 1951 in Los Angeles, CA to William Earnest Cross and Ethel Mae Cross. Bob was the 4th of 6 children. He grew up in the greater Los Angeles area. He was married in September 1973 to Jane Cross. The family moved to Flagstaff in 1977. He was employed by W.L. Gore for 22yrs and the last 13 was employed by Walgreens DC. Bob was an avid hiker & backpacker. One of his major accomplishments was hiking all of the 14k-ers in the San Juan Range, CO. There was also countless backpacking trips in the Grand Canyon. Reading American History was another love of his. Bob's commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ was the most important part of his life.

He is survived by wife Jane, daughter Heidi Kenney (Omar), granddaughters Kaya & Luna, son Steve (Leah), grandson Jezreel, granddaughter Zuriella, son Joshua (Mary), mother Ethel Cross, brother Bill Cross (Cindy), sister Barbara Vincent (Mike), sister Wanda Ratliff (Doug), and brother Frank Cross.

He is preceded in death by his father William and his brother and best friend, George Cross.
A memorial service will take place Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 3pm at Christ Church of Flagstaff, 3475 East Soliere Ave. 86004. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Northland Hospice, as they took wonderful care of Bob and Jane though this process: Northland Hospic, PO Box 997, Flagstaff, Arizona 86002.
