"'A life well lived."  That is how the family describes their father, grandfather & great-grandfather.  Chuck passed away on 10-26-24 at the age of 95, surrounded by family and friends, including his wife of 75 years, Charla, and son-in-law, Denny Lombard, BHS 67.

Following a career as an LA Fire Fighter, Chuck dedicated the rest of his life to serving the Christian mission he and Charla co-founded in Baja Mexico.  In 1966 they formed Foundation For His Ministry in Vincente Guerrero, which eventually included an orphanage, hospital, K-12 school, plus fed and cared for children left alone in the encampments.  Two additional missions were created n Oaxaca and Sinaloa, as well as transitional housing for young adults in Tijuana and housing to provide support for men following drug & addition recovery, release from prison &/or being deported from the US. Chuck made the 178 mile journey almost weekly to deliver truckloads of donations to the missions as long as he was able, and then he took charge of sending out their monthly newsletter ... truly a life well lived!

Jeanette Hart Baca, BHS '47 (1929-2022)

Jeanette at 19 yrs

We recently learned from David Kettles that his mother, Jeanette May Hart Baca, passed away on January 7, 2022 at a care center in Van Nuys California. She was born on May 2 1929.

We then found her obituary...
Jeanette May Hart Baca
1929 - 2022
Van Nuys, CA

On Friday January 7, 2022, Jeanette May Baca peacefully passed away at the Gardens at Park Balboa Memory Care Center in Van Nuys, California. This facility took such good care of her these last few years of her life. We want to thank all caretakers and staff for your kindness and for taking care of both our parents.

Our mom, Jeanette Baca, was the best mom a son could ask for. She was kind, loving and always put her children's needs first. She always said she was a boys mom and went along with everything her boys wanted to do, even joined in at times. Her laughter, smile and humor was contagious. She loved playing games with her family, casino trips & bingo. She was very active with Southern California ARC where her son Danny Baca has been a client in one of their group homes for many years.

Jeanette had many life long friends that she loved dearly and had many adventures with each of them. She loved her daughter in laws like her own that she called them her "Bonus Daughters" instead of Daughter in Laws. We were very blessed to have a mom like ours. We will miss and always love you mom.

Jeanette is survived by her sons, David Kettles (Debbie), Brian Kettles (Esther), and Danny Baca as well many grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great, great granddaughter. She is preceded in death by her husband, Nick Baca and her son Randy Kettles

A celebration of life for both Jeanette and Nick will be in June 2022. Contact family for more information. Donations can be made in her memory to: ARC 6456 Whitsett Ave North Hollywood CA 91606

Chuck Hicks, BHS '47 (1927-2021)

Charles "Chuck" Hicks
Dec 26 1927 - May 4 2021

Today Diane Hicks posted the above photo and this sad notice on Facebook...

"We lost one of the really great guys yesterday Chuck Hicks graduated from Burbank class of 1947. He went on to a long and great career in Hollywood as one of their best stuntmen. We will miss him terribly. ❤️ I love this man. He is my husband’s brother (Brian Hicks class of 1960). We had many many years of love."

We found more info below...

Chuck was born in Stockton Ca.and his family moved to the Los Angeles area a year later. Grade School & High School were spent in Burbank where he played a trumpet in the school band but grew practically over night to 6'1 &1/2" and became Burbank's Football Star Running Back. He joined the Merchant Marines and then went into the Navy.

Out of the service, he attended Loyola University on a football scholarship and went on to play with the Eagle Rock Athletic Club -a semi pro team. He tried out with the Rams and the Red Skins but there were no openings so he stayed with Eagle Rock for seven years and was voted the "Most Valuable Player" three of those years. Chuck was also involved in bringing Rugby to So. California in the early 50's. Eagle Rock, Stanford, UCLA and Pepperdine competed in the beginning.

During his football career, he was also a Professional Boxer, fighting under the name of Chuck Daley. The promoters wanted him to fight as "Jack Daley" because it was a tougher Irish sounding name, but when he was 14, he had his name tatooed on his arm and there was no way to get rid of the "Chuck" at that time. He had 8 professional fights, 6 fights at the Olympic Auditorium - 5 one round k.o.'s, in which he broke one opponents jaw, put 1 guy in hospital over night and one in a concussion for week. Chuck boxed on the Card of two Championship Fights. One in Illinois at the Chicago Stadium with BoBo Olsen & "Kid" Gavilon and in Las Vegas Nev. on the Card with Gene Fulmer & Peret .He finished with 2 wins and 1TKO when he broke his hand on the last fight causing him to retire. He was Heavy Weight Champion of the 5th. Fleet in 1946 and also Heavy Weight Champion of Loyola. He made $75 a fight, 1/3 to his Mgr. $10 to a "cut"man and $5 to Corner 2nd.and a percentage to Roger Creed and a possibility of $4,600 a year playing football.

He made more in the motion picture business and so turned his goals towards that direction. Acting, Stunt Coordinating and competing as an athlete playing in the Softball leagues in the Los Angeles Ca. area. Chuck started in the movie business in 1951. His first job was 'Working Her Way Through College" as a football player  with Ronald Reagan, Don Defore, Virgina Mayo, and Gene Nelson. He was standing-in and stunt-doubling For Clint Walker, star of "Cheyanne", learning the "Biz" when he was "Discovered" by Lucille Ball on a TV Special -"K.O. Kitty", and signed to be one of the original "Untouchables" for Desilu Productions in the part of "Kane". One of his major Character roles was "The Brow" in "Dick Tracy.

Since 1961 Chuck was a Charter Member of the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures, Inc., a past president, and 16 yrs on the board throughout the years, including organizing and putting on the Stuntmen's Annual Dinner Dance several times and Director of the 37th.1999, 38th 2000, 39th 2001 Annual Golf Tournament.

Gus was such a soft spoken, kind man. He would love to attend the Sr. Bulldog luncheons . Gus was one of the original BHS Class of ‘47, who started the Sr Bulldogs Foundation. He would make all the announcements & walk around to each table (with Nadine Magee on his arm), to have each attendee announce their name & grad year. He was a true gentleman. He will be deeply missed.

A GUS MEMORY...
8/12/19 - Korean War Remembrances by Gus Ghiselli (from a 2005 Burbank High Senior Bulldogs Newsletter)
Gus Ghiselli (BHS Class of '47) wrote: "I was training in Yamagatu, Japan getting ready to go to Korea. My good friend Bob Wilkie was already in Korea, in the southern part. I wrote and told him that if I could get in touch with him when I got there, I would. On Dec 22, 1951 the 40th Division was alerted for Korean duty to relieve the 24th Infantry Division. Our boats got to Inchon, Korea on Jan 11th, 1952. It was below freezing weather. (Is that any way to treat California kids?) We boarded railroad boxcars and headed straight north to the Iron Triangle. Our artillery guns were to help support the 2nd ROK Division. I tried several times to try to reach Wilkie. Going through our switchboard, then transferring the call a little farther south to the next switchboard, etc. But we would always run out of juke before reaching each other. When I was being sent home, I went south to a replacement camp. I was looking at the ship's manifest list to spot my name, when this arm came over my shoulder and pushed my hand down. I turned to see who in the heck it could be. It was my pal, Bob Wilke! We were listed on the same ship to leave Korea and go to Sasebo, Japan. What a great time we had visiting and catching up. Unfortunately, we were not on the same ship that brought us home. However, we were on our way home and that was the important thing. We were later best man at each other's wedding."

RAY EDWARDS BROWN
JUNE 8, 1929 ~ JULY 4, 2018

Received this email today...
I’m sending this message for those of you that haven’t heard yet that Ray passed away early this evening, July 4, at home in Burbank, less than four weeks after his 89th birthday. I’ve known Ray since 1958 when I was six years old. Everyone who knew him was aware of the unique and very special man that he was his entire life. Now he has arrived HOME for eternity, with all problems and suffering in the past. Below is what Ray and Joyce’s middle son, Mark, wrote this evening about his dad’s passing.

After a long illness, Ray Edwards "Pops" Brown passed away peacefully at home today at the age of 89, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of kindness, generosity, and devotion to the community that meant so much to him and all who had the privilege of knowing him during his lifetime.

A native son of Burbank, Ray attended Joaquin Miller Elementary, John Muir Junior High, and Burbank High School, Class of '47. Ray served his country proudly in the US Army and then ran a successful insurance agency until his retirement at the age of 80 in his beloved Burbank!

A devoted Christian, husband, father, and grandfather, "Pops" was, in every sense, "one-of-a-kind!!" He is survived by his wife of 68 years Joyce, sons Kent, Mark, and Brad, eight grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He's walking with the Lord now! Rest In Peace Pops!

Nadine Berkland Magee BHS '47 (1929-2013)

Former Senior Bulldogs President, Nadine Magee, passed away recently we just learned.

Please keep her husband Bill and the family in your thoughts and prayers.

APRIL 15, 2013 UPDATE

The following was in the Senior Bulldogs Newsletter

PASSING OF NADINE BERKLAND MAGEE, BHS '47
Former Longtime SENIOR BULLDOGS President

At the beginning of the April 1 Senior Bulldogs luncheon in Burbank, Gus Ghiselli announced to the alumni who were present that Nadine Berkland Magee had passed away two days earlier, on Saturday morning, March 30, 2013, just three days after her 84th birthday. She passed away at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. It was indeed very sad news for all of the alumni at the luncheon.

Nadine was born March 27, 1929, in Lake Mills, Iowa. Both of Nadine's parents were of full Norwegian descent. When she was two years old her family moved here to Glendale, where they lived for three or four years, and where Nadine went to Kindergarten. Then they moved to Burbank and Nadine began the 1st grade at Joaquin Miller Elementary on Providencia. She went the rest of the way through Miller, then John Muir Junior High, followed by BHS graduating in 1947. The family lived on Providencia Ave. while Nadine and her siblings were growing up. Her older brother, Ron, was BHS '45, sister, Sharon, five years younger than Nadine, began at BHS but finished at JBHS. They are both deceased. The youngest sister, Sue, is twelve years younger than Nadine, and went to JBHS. Sue currently lives in nearby Winnetka. Nadine was always involved in school activities during both junior high and high school. She was 'Senior Class Secretary' for the Class of '47. She was also a member of GAA, (Girl's Athletic Association). During her senior year Nadine was chosen to be the 'Aloha Queen', and future husband Bill was her escort for the event! In the September 2008 BHS Centennial Parade, 1947 Aloha Queen Nadine and Aloha Princess Dodie Moore '47, rode together in a classic Cadillac convertible belonging to Dodie's son-in-law. Nadine always headed-up the Class of '47 reunions held each five years from the 25th in 1972 to the 60th in 2007, a lot of work to be sure, but a labor of love for her. By 2012 she physically was not up to the task, and therefore no reunion was held

After BHS Nadine attended Glendale College for one year. She then studied nursing at Santa Rosa Community College in northern California, and after graduating became a nurse. She then returned to Burbank and first worked as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank for a short time. Nadine then went to work for Burbank obstetrician, Dr. Rombeau, in his office as his nurse. She worked for him for quite a few years, both before having children and after, and later would fill in when needed.

Nadine first met Bill Magee in September 1941 when they both began the 7th grade in Burbank at John Muir Junior High. In the 9th grade Nadine wore Bill's class ring on a chain around her neck! Bill says Nadine was very popular, and he usually had to "book a date" about a month ahead! As mentioned he was her date for the 1947 Aloha event where she was the Queen. Sometime after Nadine returned to Burbank after college in Santa Rosa she and Bill reunited. Bill said, "THANK GOODNESS we got back together after high school"! They were married on May 17, 1953, and her passing comes just seven weeks before their 60th wedding anniversary. They first lived in Canoga Park, and then for the last 46 years they have lived in Northridge. Bill and Nadine had two children, Teri and Patrick. Teri is also a nurse, and works at Northridge Hospital. She lives in Northridge. Bill says Teri has been "a life saver" in caring for Nadine at home, and at both Northridge Hospital and the rehab in Chatsworth where Nadine had been recently. Most Senior Bulldogs who attend the Burbank luncheons know that Teri is an 'Honorary Senior Bulldog', usually attending the luncheons and helping in many ways. Patrick Magee and his family live in Woodland Hills. He has a son, Ryan, and two daughters, Nicole, and Jennifer. Bill equates his and Nadine’s life together to this verse from Cinderella, “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.”

Bill Magee began to attend the Senior Bulldogs luncheons in Burbank in 1992 after he had retired in 1991. At that time there were only about 20 men who attended. They first met at El Chiquito Mexican Restaurant on Olive Ave. in Burbank, owned by Bob Gomez BHS '48, which was across the street from Warner Bros. Nadine was the first lady to attend any of the Senior Bulldogs luncheons! Bill took Nadine with him to one of the luncheons. Everyone knew Nadine, and vice versa. Soon the word spread and more ladies began to attend. The group then began holding the luncheons at Genio's Restaurant on Olive Ave., owned by Marvin Cecchini BHS '52, and Gene Cecchini BHS '54. After that the luncheons were held at the Burbank Holiday Inn for several years. Finally the move was made to the Burbank Elks Lodge on Hollywood Way where the monthly Burbank luncheons continue today on the first Monday of each month, (second Monday in September). Throughout all of these moves the attendance and membership continued to grow, and Nadine was there consistently. Nadine was the Senior Bulldogs Vice President for two years. Next she was the Senior Bulldogs President for about eight years right up until a couple of years ago when Carol Brown Baker '67 became the President. During all of the years that Nadine served, Bill Magee was the Senior Bulldogs Treasurer. All of the Burbank luncheon attendees will remember that every month about ten very nice stuffed animals were given to ten "lucky" ladies that month. Nadine and her daughter, Teri, spent time each month going out to find these animals to be given at the next luncheon. There are a number of classmates of Nadines' who regularly attend the Burbank luncheons, some like Ray Brown and Barbara Rogers Roberts who went all the way through school with her from Joaquin Miller, and several others like Al Copping, Junius "Jay" Davis, Ralph "Buddy" Day, Carmen Uharriet Gardina, Gus Ghiselli, Bette Murphy Hamer, Iris Brown Larson, Dodie Moore, Joyce Nelson Neumeier, and Bob Santoyo who went all through Muir and BHS with Nadine. These friendships stretch back more than 65 years to almost 80 years! Nadine Magee was a very loving lady. Bill Magee says, "she loved everyone all of the time"! Another love of Nadine's was animals, and animal rescue specifically. She and Teri have been involved for years with "Life 4 Paws" and "Cats, Inc.", and her passing will be missed there, also.

Nadine attended her last Senior Bulldogs luncheon in Burbank on December 3, 2012. On December 15 she fell and broke a hip. Over the next couple of months she had been in Northridge Hospital and then at a rehabilitation center in Chatsworth. After that she was at home for 18 days, but it then became necessary to return to Northridge Hospital, where she was for 5 days until her unexpected passing on the morning of Saturday, March 30. Nadine's sister, Sue, hosted a gathering for the family and their closest friends on April 13. This had been planned originally before Nadine's passing, so out-of-town relatives could come to see Nadine after her recuperation. After her death it became a time for them to come together to memorialize her wonderful life. Both Bill and Teri Magee plan to attend the May 6 Senior Bulldogs luncheon in Burbank at the Elks Lodge. While being together on that day there will be a time to celebrate the life of Nadine Berkland Magee with her husband and her daughter. They will have photos of Nadine, which will be shared, and will be hosting our dessert to honor her. Time will be given if any Senior Bulldogs wish to share a story or memory of Nadine. If you are in the Los Angeles area and would like to share in the celebration of Nadine Magee's life, then please do attend the May 6 luncheon at the Burbank Elks Lodge beginning at 11:00 A.M.
