OBITUARY
Edwin Charles James was born on September 7th, 1945, in Burbank, California just days after the end of World War II.

His parents, Elleen (Givan) and William James, owned and operated an apartment complex in Burbank, California where Ed was raised, and there Ed learned how to fix anything and everything while he helped his parents maintain their apartments, skills that he would use all his life.

He graduated from Burbank High School in 1963 followed by Glendale City College in 1965, obtaining an Associates of Science degree in mechanical drawing. He joined the US Air Force in March 1966 and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base as an Airman Second Class, followed by advanced training in Air Training Command in Denver. He was stationed at George Air Force base with the 329th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, in Southern California and eventually being promoted to Airman 2nd Class before being deployed to Phan Rang Air Force Base in South Vietnam during 1967 as part of the 435th Munitions Maintenance Squadron. While in Vietnam he was promoted to Sergeant, and in 1968 was transferred back to California to the Strategic Air Command training center as part to the 93rd Bombardment Wing at Castle Air Force Base, in Merced, California, where he was an instructor for replacement training units for the B-52 Stratofortress.

After leaving the Air Force, he returned to Burbank and worked 7 years for the City of Burbank water department as a draftsman, before moving his young family to the Northern California town of Auburn, to be near his in-laws. There Ed and family lived in Roseville while they built a house in Ophir, and he later participated in 4H at Ophir Elementary School as a leader for the shooting sports and woodworking programs. When younger son Dean was in the Del Oro High School Band, Ed volunteered his support.

In 2000, he donated his kidney to his oldest son Erik at the UC Davis Med Center, featured as a Father’s Day story on KCRA news, making Ed a brief celebrity around Auburn. During that time, he worked for 25 years for Nevada Irrigation District at the Placer County Yard in Gold Hill, as a maintenance worker and then foreman for the Placer maintenance crew, finally retiring in 2002.

After retirement of his wife Jo Ann in 2009, they moved to Grants Pass, Oregon, where they made many friends, and enjoyed the company of many visitors. Ed and Jo Ann were volunteers at the Josephine Community Library, with Ed employing his maintenance skills developed in his youth. They traveled widely, including trips to Australia, China, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Last year, they returned to Placer County, moving to Lincoln, to be closer to family.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann (Knight), son Erik James, daughter in-law Theresa, and granddaughter Bridget of Lincoln and grandson William of Berkeley, California; and his son Dean James, daughter-in-law Cyndi, and granddaughter Alicyn Shea of Rocklin; and his brother William James, sister-in-law Sharon, and niece Sherry Owens of La Crescenta, California.

Peggy Lee Sutton Jackson
September 27, 1945 - March 28, 2024

Sad news posted today on Facebook by Carole Wells...

Peggy Sutton Jackson BHS’63 went home to her Lord early this morning in Kingman, Arizona, surrounded by her loving family.

Peggy was born on September 27, 1945, to Rosalie Griswold Sutton and Thomas Ross Sutton in Burbank, California. Though she moved a lot in her younger years, by the time she was ready to go to high school, she and her brother, Jerry Ross Sutton BHS ’62, were living in Burbank and attended Burbank High for all three years where she loved singing in Mr. Hall’s chorus and having a role in MUSIC MAN.

The best thing that happened to her in high school was meeting one of her brother’s very good friends, Merrill Jay Jackson BHS ’62. They began dating the end of her junior year and were married a little more than a year after she graduated from high school, on October 16, 1964. This October would have been the 60th wedding anniversary of their very successful life together.

Peggy and Merrill raised two fine boys, Jay and Andy. Sadly, Andy died in a motorcycle accident in 2001. Jay blessed his mother with three grandchildren, Heather and Kayla Rose, the girls she always longed to have, and Eddie her handsome grandson.

Peggy was always kind, generous and loving and she will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Danielle Aimee Tarjoman recently posted this sad news on Facebook...

Heartbroken & shocked. The man who walked me down the isle, passed away suddenly and tragically, Saturday morning. Uncle Mark… I can’t even come to terms with this. You were the reason my life turned out the way it did. You guided me, offered me a roof over my head, consoled me, comforted me, loved me for who I was, with no filters… took me in as if I were one of your own. I owe literally everything to you. You gave me that chance I so desperately wanted and needed in California. You held my hand while walking me down the isle. You loved this little family I created, more than I ever expected. You texted me at all the right times. You let me vent when my heart was hurting. You gave me such great advice. What am I supposed to do now?

My life won’t be the same without. I love you so much. You leaving, has taken huge part of my heart and soul. I will miss your smile, your laugh and your jokes. Your kind and selfless heart and eyes. Your unique point of view and the way you looked at life.

Life isn’t going to be the same without you. But the sad truth is that when I hugged you in California, I felt that was the last time I’d ever hug you. I cried so hard that day… just as hard as I’m crying now. I wish we made it back to California, one last time, so I could give you one last hug. Your hugs were the best. I love you and will forever miss you…..

…. To the moon 🌙 and back.

I am very saddened by this news. Richie (as I knew him) lived up the street from me on Brighton Street. He and Gary Parsons were the older boys on the block and ruled the roost. Richie and Gary organized the games we played on the street--three flies up, hit the bat, touch football, etc.--and they always allowed the younger kids to play. I still remember playing tackle football with Richie on his front lawn with other boys--and I am seven years younger than Richie. Of course, I thought I was just as good as the others and never realized they were taking it easy on me when they let me score those touchdowns. By the way, for those of you who remember Gary Parsons, he had more muscles than all of the rest of the boys on our street put together. Richie and I saw each other at the 2008 BHS Centennial celebration and though it had been at least 40 years since we had seen each other, we each recognized the other. We had a nice chat about growing up and all of the characters on our street. It was a time when kids wandered free and roamed the neighborhood until you found other kids to hang out with, even if they were seven years older! Richie was a part of that time for me and his passing, like the passing of that era, makes me sad. Still, I am grateful for the many pleasant memories. RIP Richie.

NOVEMBER 11, 2022 UPDATE

Below is a tribute that was put on FB by Richard Shaw's Sons, Nick and Tony Shaw.
There are also several pictures attached that you can view on Tony Shaw's FB page.

Details for the Memorial Service to be held on December 16, 2022 can be obtained
by emailing Nick Shaw at nickshaw8122@yahoo.com

It's with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father Richard Shaw. We are devastated, and it feels like the entire world is dimmer without him here. We sit here recalling the events of the last 6 weeks, and how we felt relief and had hope that he could recover. But ultimately, our father, who was a fighter, is finally able to rest. He doesn't have to fight anymore. He was a lifelong friend to so many, and a supreme father to us boys.

When our mother Megan passed away when we were very young, our father stepped into his calling. He went through more trauma than most people could handle, yet he was always on call to be "dad". He called himself the MADman, the "mom-and-dad man" because he had to do it all. It's only after having children of our own, do we truly understand how incredible what he did was. He raised two (and we'll fully admit, often difficult) children by himself. He gave us a wondrous childhood. We never wanted for anything. And he was always there for us. Somehow present at all the sporting events and stage plays at the same time. It seems impossible. And we feel we have yet to outdo the childhood he gave us with our own kids.

He lived to see his lifelong friendships evolve, and to see his sons turn into men. He watched us become fathers of our own. And he got to spoil four grandchildren, Liam, Collin, Meagan and baby Lincoln. The morals and integrity he taught us will live on through them, just as his incredible presence will live on through all the friends he has touched in his life. We are thankful to have our Aunt Terri (Nana) and Uncle Howard to help guide us through this stretch, because our hearts are broken. The sadness feels like an ocean, and we're in tiny little boats getting rocked by waves. But there's something about hearing your kids laugh that brings you back to dry land. We know we have a lot of time ahead of us, and many new memories to create, but are so grateful that he brought us this far.

We made sure to let him know that his sacrifices didn't go unnoticed, and that we were extremely proud of him. We miss him so much. He was our father, our best friend, and our hero.

The outpouring of genuine love from everyone has been overwhelming and powerful, and we thank you all. We think about you all the time, Dad.
Love you always.
Your Boys --

We want to offer this page as a space for the people he touched in his life, to write a memory about him, and post it here.

The service will be held on December 16th at 12pm. Please email for details to nickshaw8122@yahoo.com

Phil was one of those legends and yes everyone knew his name. Two of my uncles, Barry and Gary Wootton played around that same time...RIP Phil.

Phil participated in an American Legion baseball game with us I believe in the summer of 62. He just played a couple innings. The game was at the Olive Rec. He singled and tried to stretch it to a double. He had the base but he was so fast he slid head first and passed OVER the bag bumping his groin in the process! He was tagged out. He came back to the bench with a strange gait and said, "DAMN, this game is rough!" We all laughed! I'll always remember that! I didn't know him personally, but thoroughly enjoyed watching his exploits on the gridiron! RIP, my friend!

    Darlene Culotta
Donald Matthews Phil had a gift of making people laugh.

    Donald Matthews
Darlene Culotta he had a great quality about him. A natural leader. He was a good childhood friend of a former baseball opponent that played at Burroughs: Terre Hirsch had nothing but great things to say about Phil.
