Wesley Neal Manor, BHS '51 (1933-2001)

Wesley Neal Manor
August 16, 1933 - June 9, 2001

Dr. Wesley Neal Manor

Dr. Wesley Neal Manor, 67, who had a practice in Anacortes at one time, died suddenly early Saturday morning, June 9, in Oak Harbor.

He was a resident of Oak Harbor.

Dr. Manor was born Aug. 16, 1933, to Mildred and Wesley Manor in Lancaster, Calif. As a child, he had a love for music and was an accomplished pianist.

Dr. Manor served four years in U.S. Army intelligence in the early 1950s. Deciding on a career in medicine instead of music, Dr. Manor graduated from the California College of Medicine, now the University of California at Irvine, in 1964.

In 1965, he moved with his family to Coupeville and opened one of the first family practices on Whidbey Island. This was a happy period in Dr. Manor's life because making house calls still was a common occurrence and payment for his services often took the form of produce or other barter.

During this time, Dr. Manor also was instrumental in Whidbey General Hospital's inception and development. In 1971, he returned to school at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Ore., and completed his ear, nose and throat specialty residency.

In 1975, Dr. Manor and his younger brother "Dr. Norm" opened two ear, nose and throat clinics, one in Mount Vernon and the other in Anacortes. The brothers practiced together until 1980, when "Dr. Neal" returned to Coupeville to practice -- a town that he loved.

Dr. Manor also served as director of the Island County Health Department for several years, while running his busy practice. In addition, he traveled to Ketchikan, Alaska, several times a year to provide needed ENT medical services to patients in that remote area.

Dr. Manor is survived by his beloved wife, Rhonda, in Oak Harbor; three children from his first marriage to Jeannette Beatty of Anacortes -- daughter Janell and her husband Colin Key of Scotland, son Darrin and his wife Karey Manor of Bainbridge Island and daughter Tonja and her husband Jason Dunton of Anacortes; two stepsons from his marriage to Rhonda -- Joshua and his wife Rachael Lancaster of Oak Harbor and Lee Lancaster of North Carolina. He also is survived by his brother, Norman Manor, M.D., of Miles City, Mont. and by eight grandchildren, Lauren and Ellen Key, Sarah and Jordan Manor, Alex, Megan and Taylor Dunton and Jacob Lancaster.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Neal Manor Fund, c/o Whidbey Island Hospital Foundation, POB 400, Coupeville, Wash., 98239.

Memorial services for Dr. Manor are 1 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2001, at Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor

Arrangements were under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

JULY 22, 2020 UPDATE

Lee Paysinger a True Community Icon Passes Away
My Burbank - July 21, 2020

Burbank has lost a true original. An advocate, a community icon, a wife, a friend, a mom, and a Nana. Lee Paysinger was one of a kind and those that knew and loved her are mourning the loss of this beautiful force of nature.

Lee was the ultimate American success story. Born Zella Lee into abject poverty on an Indian reservation in Eufaula, Oklahoma to a teenage mother, she was determined as a young child to make a better life for herself. During the war years, her mother Inez moved the small family to Burbank where she got work at Lockheed.

Zella grew up on Orchard St with her little sister Sherma and attended Monterey Elementary School, Luther Burbank, and finally Burbank High School. Zella loved the social life of the school and broke many hearts as her dazzling beauty was hard to deny even at a young age.

After high school, she started work at Bob’s Big Boy on San Fernando Road where she charmed her customers and became famous for her good nature, stunning smile, and bubbly personality. During this time the owner and founder of Bob’s, Mr. Bob Wian tapped Zella to form a team of trainers to travel the country and supervise the opening of new Bob’s Big Boys franchises. Zella visited many states and enjoyed the travel, but she always knew she would never leave her beloved Burbank.

Zella’s life changed again forever when in 1962 she gave birth to her first and only child Teri. History repeated itself and Zella found herself a single mom in the early 60’s. This was not about to stop her. She continued to work, purchased a home, and then met and married the love of her life, Robert Paysinger, known to all as Bob. Bob was a Burbank Police Officer and the two of them made a great team. Bob loved and adored Zella’s baby daughter and embraced her as his own.

During this time, Zella decided to reinvent herself once more, so she changed her name to Lee and bleached her hair blonde! Lee Paysinger it was! She started work at Talleyrand where she worked for over twenty-five years. Customers would come from all over town just to sit in her station and listen to her tell jokes, smile, and flirt. Lee was a people person, but her heart always belonged to Bob.

After many years of work Bob and Lee would go on to enjoy an active vibrant retirement, participating in the Senior Olympics, daily walks down Sixth Street, traveling, and spending time with family. In the late ’80s, Lee started to welcome grandbabies and she happily became Nana to Caitlin, Calli, and Jackson.

She reinvented herself once more as a community activist. She ran for City Council, helped establish the East Valley Boys and Girls Club in Burbank, and was a charter member of the brand new Burbank on Parade Committee. She was instrumental in organizing, fundraising, and ensuring the participation of numerous celebrities to participate in the parade.

She was an active member of the BHS/JBHS Alumni organization and became an Alumni cheerleader! She had so much fun marching with the alumni team in Burbank on Parade every year and the DoDa Parade in Pasadena. She was a true crowd-pleaser.

Lee’s crowning achievement for the city was most certainly her work on the Burbank Library Board. She helped design, implement, and oversee the construction of the state of the art Buena Vista Library. Although the city knows it as the Buena Vista Library, Lee’s family knows it as Nana’s Library. She was so proud of her name on the plaque out front and all the work that went into creating this beautiful Burbank landmark. The library is a testament to her love of community, childhood literacy, and Burbank.

In later years, Bob and Lee slowed down but still insisted on visiting their favorite coffee shop Lancers where they would sit in the mint green window booths, holding court and having breakfast.

Lee will be sorely missed not only by her beloved Bob, her daughter Teri, her grandchildren, and her great-granddaughter but by the many diverse communities, friends, and neighbors in Burbank that she was an integral part of for most of her life. Her legacy of service, combined with good cheer and just plain fun, will live in our hearts forever.

John Broadley, BHS '65 Passed Away in 2016

John Peter Broadley
September 1, 1947 - May 2016

We just learned the sad news that John Broadley, BHS '65, passed away in 2016 from throat cancer. John is the twin brother of Pete Broadley.

Here is his Facebook photo

Here is a photo and note sent to me in 2010 that we posted on our class 1967 blog

Cathy,

I just wanted to pass on a little about two BHS guys I recently reconnected with.

I met with Steve Hubert & John Broadley for lunch a month or so ago. Both the class of 65. The picture is attached. We met for lunch and had a nice time reminiscing. Each of us had different memories of those days when we were in Burbank.

Steve is living on Balboa Island and is close to retiring, still surfs and John is in Huntington Beach after living 20 years in Hawaii. While John doesn't surf anymore, he still enjoys the water from his boat. What I had forgotten about John was his great sense of humor.

Best,
Madelaine (Zeleany) Whiteman

RIP John.

Ron Everett, BHS '58 (1940-2020)

Ronald Murray Everett
October 2, 1940 - July 5, 2020

Sadly, we just learned from sister-in-law, Linda Peterson Everett (BHS '67), that her husband Bob's brother, Ron Everett, passed away this past Sunday, July 5, 2020. She shared the above photo and following note written on Facebook by her nephew, Mark:

"Late last night or very early this morning my dad passed away. The past two to three years he dealt with medical challenges that slowly took from him that which we take for granted. His name was Ronald M. Everett but was know simply as "Ron". Losing my blood father to a plane crash at a very young age, my mom remarried Ron and from that day forward, he has been my "Dad". In the beginning, it was he, my mom, me and my sister. And then soon came three more sisters. Something that impressed me over the years he raised the five of us, was that he always treated us equally.

"We were both of similar stature, broader in the shoulders and thicker in the chest. In years gone by more that a couple times someone had said, you look like your dad. We'd smile at each other and just say thank you.

"If there was a memorial/celebration of life that could have been done Pre-Covid, I'm quite sure there would be a good number of people in attendance. Not just because we come from a large family but because he touched many lives. Yes he was a husband, father and grandfather but also
-Involved in his church for decades
-Participated in leadership for the Walnut Valley School District
And
-Participated in city politics for his city of Diamond Bar, CA. He was a Councilman and then held the position of Mayor of Diamond Bar.

"It was some months back we were told that his time may be near and Debbie and I went out to see him at the care facility he was at. We made up a little photo album for him to flip through and hopefully trigger memories. My sister Marla shared later that there were two pictures we put in the book of he with his two brothers and he'd tap his finger and linger on. I was able to hold his hand we shared a gaze but the ability to share in give and take conversation, that time was gone.

"If this had been fast and sudden, there would be more sorrow. But given the road he had traveled to get here, my feelings today are more of joy knowing he is in heaven and is suffering no more.

"Blessings to my sister Marla and brother-in-law Steve Rickard, who for so many months drove up to my folks and cared for dad, daily. I am moved by their enduring care and love."

Linda commented:
"Mark, I am touched by your beautiful tribute to Ron and so proud of you for those words you chose to honor him. My brother-in-law, Ron, was one of the finest people I have ever known. As you know, it is because of Ron and Kay that I met and then married his brother, Bob, and those three Everett "boys", Ron, Stan and Bob, are special indeed. I loved sweet, gentle and kind Ron and Bob and I will miss him here on earth always. He is now at peace."

My mother was good friends with Ron's mother, Anita, and my sister, Susie Palmer Wheeler, was in Ron's class at BHS. Here are a couple of photos she found in their 1956 yearbook when they were in 10th grade.

RIP Ron.

John Gilbert

"John Gilbert was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer stage 2 in 2017 and given only six months to live, but John was a fighter! He had an esophagectomy, proton therapy, chemotherapy, went to City of Hope and did several drug trials, but pneumonia set in and it is what finally took him unexpectedly on June 28, 2020.
