Ben Estes, BHS '72 (1954-2022)
Ben Estes 1954-2022
As a young adult, Ben studied business at Glendale Community College and held various jobs including working at Harveys in Lake Tahoe. Ben eventually went to work for Lockheed Aircraft Co. as a manufacturing control supervisor for the L-10-11 TriStar. He then moved on to working for the studios as a grip, where he eventually retired. In 1990,
Ben married Julie Ponek at St. Finbar Catholic Church. The two made their home in Santa Clarita. The birth of daughters, Shelby and Ally, brought much joy to the couple. As the girls became young adults, Ben took pride in their accomplishments. The family enjoyed many fun times together, which often included trips to the beach and Yosemite. Ben was an avid fisherman, devoted Dodger fan, loved to cook and socialize. During one of his family trips to Crystal Cove he discovered a footballfish that had washed up on the shore. This rarely seen deep-sea creature is now in the National History Museum Ichthyology Collection.
On November 2, 2022, Ben unexpectedly passed away. He was a kind and generous son, husband, father, brother, uncle and nephew. Ben was pre-deceased by his father Jack Estes and nephew, Robert Donathan. He is survived by his mother, Sally Estes, wife, Julie Estes, daughters, Shelby and Ally, brother Don Estes (Ann), sister Shannon Donathan, aunt, Susan Burns, uncle, Peter Pierson and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that everyone who knew Ben pass along the same giving spirit he shared with others. Services will be held at 12 noon December 10, 2022, at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church located at 22508 Copper Hill Drive in Santa Clarita. A reception will follow at a nearby family home.

Carol Stephenson-Walter posted today the following sad notice and photo of Tom with his daughter, Briana...
"I am sadden to say my brother Tom Thompson passed away this morning at 3:30am. He was waiting for a liver and kidney transplant for 3 years and never was lucky enough to receive what he needed. He was very sick and also made it thru Covid 4 weeks ago. He was 67 and graduated from Burbank High School. In his teen years he worked at Shacky's Pizza. He also served in the Navy. And then became a steamfitter and help build parts of Bush Gardens and part of Henry Mayo Hospital. He loved his motorcycle rides on beautiful days. And just cherished his daughter and grandson. He will be greatly missed. He won't ever be forgotten."

Man who killed uncle, staged mother’s suicide sentenced to life in prison
by: Travis Schlepp
Posted: Apr 19, 2022
A man who killed his mother and uncle in Sylmar and then attempted to stage his mother’s death to look like a suicide pleaded guilty to two counts of murder Monday.
Marcel Gradvohl, 38, was arrested in November 2021 for the deaths of his mother, Maureen Gradvohl, and his uncle, Edward Steckel.
The Los Angeles Police Department began investigating their deaths on Nov. 28, 2021, after Marcel had called them to report finding his mother’s body.
When police arrived at his mother’s home on the 12600 block of Amboy Avenue, they were greeted by Marcel who told police he found his mother hanging in the garage. Maureen was declared dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives began investigating and learned that Marcel had been spotted just a day before digging in the backyard of the property. Investigators later found Steckel’s body buried in the backyard.
During police questioning, Marcel admitted to killing his uncle during a dispute on Nov. 26, 2021. Later that same day he strangled his mother. The following day he buried his uncle in the backyard and the day after that he called police to report his mother’s suicide.
Gradvohl was then arrested and booked for their murders.
On Monday, he appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree murder. He was sentenced to 25 years to life plus four years for the use of a handgun in his uncle’s death and 25 years to life plus one year for the use of a rope in his mother’s death.
The sentences will run consecutively meaning he will have to finish serving one sentence before he begins serving the next.
