Genevieve Cowden Sultenfuss BHS '28 Turns 100!

Received today the following email with photos from Alan Landros... WOW!!

On Sunday, August 15 I, along with Jana Jordan Guest - also BHS '70 and a longtime friend of the honoree, attended the 100th birthday party of Genevieve Cowden Sultenfuss, BHS '28, at the Glendale Elk's Lodge on Colorado in Glendale. Over 250 (closer to 300) people were there to congratulate Genevieve. She and some of her family sat at a head table and the guests filed past to give Genevieve their birthday greetings and best wishes.

At 2:00 a serve yourself ice cream sundae bar began, with numerous kinds of Baskin-Robbins ice cream, and toppings galore, (sundaes on Sunday)! At 3:00 two large cakes with 50 lit candles on each were brought out, and everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Genevieve. (The candles were then blown out with an air cannister!) One cake was chocolate and the other was white cake, and after being cut were served to all the guests. At 4:00 was a champagne toast to Genevieve, with several of her family speaking, along with a Glendale City Councilwoman and two former Mayors. Also, a resolution was read from L.A. County Supervisor, Mike Antonovich, who also knows Genevieve. Besides champagne, wine and Martinelli's cider was available. It was a grand celebration!

Genevieve's younger brother, 97 year old Willis Cowden, came from Salt Lake City with his daughter for the celebration. Willis is a BHS winter '32 grad. He and his family have lived in Salt Lake City for many years, and Willis was a police officer for the SLC Police Department for 29 years. Genevieve and Willis had two older sisters who have passed away that were from the BHS '25 and '26 classes. The mother of Genevieve and her siblings lived to be almost 103!

Genevieve Cowden Sultenfuss was born on August 12, 1910. She still lives in her own home in Glendale that she and her husband had built in 1940. She still sold real estate occasionally after she was 90, and she drove until she was 93. She was the first female president of the Glendale Board of Realtors in 1968, and the first female president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce in 1977. Her daughters both graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale, Audrey Sultenfuss Carr in 1956, and Julie Sultenfuss Shermer in 1960.

Genevieve has seven grandchildren, and about the same number of great-grandchildren. Genevieve from the BHS class of 1928 rode in a 1928 Ford in the BHS Centennial Parade on September 13, 2008. There is a story about her that I wrote that is included in the BHS Centennial book, "The Blue and White Wave High". Genevieve and some of her family will be at the next Senior Bulldogs alumni luncheon on September 13 at the Burbank Elk's Lodge where there will be recognition of Genevieve's 100th birthday in a Bulldogs celebration.

Received word of the following from Gary Marca '69...

Gary Smestad BHS '64 (1946-2010)

Sadly, we just got word that Gary Smestad passed away today.

Joan Ortega said he had not been feeling great having had back issues for a couple weeks and that Gary died in his sleep.

In 1990, Gary's younger brother, Dewey Smestad (class of '67 but moved to San Jose before senior yr), proceeded him in death at age 42.

We offer our deepest condolances to Gary's wife, Karen, to their children/grandchildren and to all his loved ones, praying for the LORD's comfort.

"RIP Gary Smestad. We will miss you beyond words."
Long time friends, Fred and Joan (Nobile) Ortega

Karen (Shield) Smestad (BHS '64) and Gary

August 10, 2010 UPDATE from Pam Kirkwood:

It is with heavy hearts that Jon and I send you this "Loop" in honor and memory of our good friend and BHS '64 Classmate, Gary Smestad...

Gary passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Sunday, August 8th.

Gary was married to Karen Shield Smestad, also a BHS '64 graduate. He was a wonderful Dad, Grandfather, Brother and Uncle...as well as a good friend to so many...

Gary was a Marine and proud of it. He was always present at every Memorial Day and Veterans' Day Ceremony at Mc Cambridge Park.

He was a member of the Burbank Elks and would frequently drop in to say "hi" to all of us who were attending the Senior Bulldog Luncheons at the Elks.

Gary was also proud to be a Burbank High Graduate and was a loyal Bulldog...He and Karen were always part of our BHS Class of '64 Reunion Committee Team.

We will truly miss seeing that great smile of his, as he pulled up in his red Corvette...and we will miss those big "bear hugs" he always had for everyone.

For those of you who have "put off" going to your class reunions...ya really shouldn't...You just never know who will not be there at the next one. We were very fortunate to be able to share many happy times with Gary and Karen. We are grateful for those memories...

There will be a "Celebration of Life" for Gary this coming Sunday, August 15th, at the Burbank Elks Lodge located at 2232 N. Hollywood Way, at 12 Noon.

We hope to see many of you there as we honor our friend's life.

Semper Fi, Gary...and may God Bless You

Eddie Meador

LINK TO EMAIL NOMINATION: http://www.profootballhof.com/service/contact.aspx

Marty Uribe (BHS '69), Ed Meador and Bob Gorrie (BHS '70)

My friends and Pals,

Please take a few minutes to go on this web site and encourage the Hall of Fame committee to put Eddie Meador on the ballot. Some of you helped me and the family last year. We were a few votes short. Eddie Meador as some of you know was a great DB with the Rams in the 60s. Read his BIO on his website and you will agree he should be in the Hall of Fame.

Thanks for you time and help!!!

Fight On!!!,

--- On Mon, 8/2/10 ---
From: Coach Meador
Subject: Eddie Meador

Good afternoon, everyone.

On behalf of the children of Eddie Meador, I wanted to write you all and remind you that the HOF Selection Committee (for Seniors) will be convening in Canton in the next 2 weeks for this year's induction. Part of what they will do while they are there is decide on the 1 or 2 Seniors to nominate for 2011.

Since you all have shown special interest in the past year, I thought you may want to consider writing one or two of the Seniors Selection Committee members to plead your case. A list of them is on the HOF website under "Selection Process". They have an asterisk by their names. Then, you could go to our website
http://www.edmeador21.com/ for their e-mail addresses.

Know that the Meador family has been greatly touched by all your support in the past. If you have the desire, please feel free to send a positive e-mail as these committee members get ready to whittle down their list in the upcoming days.

With fingers crossed,
Dave Meador

Just a quick follow up message about the ED HOF project. A quick story of my history with EM.

My brother and family met Eddie Meador several years ago when Marty (brother) received an award from Burbank Rec and Parks. See photo attached. I remember how EM took time out to meet and talk to each one of my family members including me. At the time he was the starting safety for the Rams and was one of the best DB's in the NFL. He was kind, courteous and thoughtful to our family and I remember how impressed I was that a star NFL athlete took the time to come to Burbank to give a sports award and meet each family member. He was a special person and outstanding football player.

Thanks again for all your help!!

Just got this e-mail tonight from Eddie Meador's son Dave Meador.

Please read how to effectively nominate EM for the senior HOF!!!

Thanks so much, Gil. We knew we could count on you and "the nation" to come through!

From what I understand, Dad is being talked about among the "powers that be". I've been told that as long as the committee doesn't get bombarded with long, "cookie cutter" e-mails, and if the e-mails are brief, positive, and contain substance (they are aware of stats and such), then we probably won't tick anyone off or drive their thoughts away from Dad. We learned that lesson last year.

We sure appreciate you guys! Won't it be so cool if we hear his name in the upcoming days?! If that happens, we will surely be proud of him and everybody who had a hand in his nomination.

Thanks so much. Feel free to pass this on to the nation as well!

Go #21,
Dave Meador
