Dean Moxness, BHS '61, Passed Away Dec 23, 2015

Today I received this notice from Dean's sister...

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I let you know that my dear brother, Dean, passed away at 6:05 last night. The last couple of weeks were a struggle, so we all consider it a blessing. He went peacefully.

I am so grateful he and his wife were nearby. Despite Dean's illness, they had decided to winter in Florida and had arrived in their RV in mid-November at a campground about 7 miles from me. Their children flew here about a week and a half ago, so he was able to visit with them. He passed knowing how much he was loved by us all.

JANUARY 29, 2016 UPDATE

Obituary
Catherine-Nicholls-Obituary
Catherine Nicholls 1920-2015 and John Nicholls 1915-2007 "Together Again"

Catherine "Katie" Nicholls (95) passed away peacefully in Burbank on December 15, 2015, surrounded by her family. Catherine was an active member of the Burbank Community where she lived for over 83 years.

Catherine was born in Glasgow, Scotland in January 1920 to George and Jeannie Hunter. Her family emigrated, through Ellis Island, to Schenectady, New York when she was just 3 years old. When she was 7, her family moved to Detroit, Michigan and then on to Burbank, California when she was 12 years old.

Catherine graduated from Burbank High School in the Winter class of 1938. She always loved to dance and spent many summers dancing away with the many popular Big Bands of Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, at the Avalon Casino on Catalina Island. She met the love of her life, John "Johnny" Nicholls, when her parents were running a Boarding House. Johnny was born in Mineral, Washington, December 1915, and had come down from Malone, Washington to attend Aeronautical School, which, during World War II, offered him a position at Lockheed Aircraft supervising the production of the P38 Lightning Aircraft.

John and Catherine were married on June 26, 1942. Together, while owning and operating a Motel and Upholstery Shop, they raised five children. They joined the First Lutheran Church and enjoyed being in a Square Dancing Club while the children attended the Church and School. In 1961, they moved into one of the First Electric Medallion Houses in Burbank. Johnny had taken the entire summer off to build the home on a lot that Catherine found, with only a pool on the property. They lived there 13 years while John worked many years for Axvall Instruments, as a Tool and Die Maker and Catherine worked for the Burbank Central Library, as a Library Clerk. John became a 32nd Degree Mason and together they worked as Realtor's and became members of the Burbank Historical Society. Catherine also volunteered with the State Elections for over a decade.

After their five children were raised and married, they enjoyed boating in their 35 foot Chris Craft and then traveling and camping in their 30 foot motor home. They spent many summers visiting John's family in Washington; along with many trips with the Burbank Elks Lodge's Roving Antlers; as well as, many boating trips to Catalina with Catherine's cousins: Jean Sparks & Rena Stumbo Ryde.

Above all, family was one of the most important part of Catherine and Johnny's life. They attended, as well as hosted, many family gatherings where John always told his family how proud he was of each and every one of them. The most famous was the Nicholls Family Christmas party held annually. After Johnny's death on February 9, 2007, Catherine continued on with the tradition of hosting the Annual Family Christmas party each year. She also hosted St. Patrick's Day parties and Thanksgiving Dinner each year.

Catherine will always be remembered for her ageless beauty and boundless energy. She was always ready to go at a moment's notice. She continued dancing away for many years, (well into her early 90's), at the Joslyn Senior Center in Burbank. After singing and gently swaying to her Grandson Steve Dempsey's piano playing, she suffered a massive stroke. She is now dancing her heart out in Heaven, with her beloved, Johnny.

Catherine leaves behind five children: Joan (Don) Dempsey; Richard Nicholls; George (Christie) Nicholls; Carol (Wayne) Lebrecht; and Cathy (John) Coyle; 17 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great, grandchild. Catherine was laid to rest on December 22, 2015, after a beautiful Service at the Old North Church in Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills. A Scottish mist loomed as a backdrop while a lone bagpiper's song filled the air as she was placed in her final resting place, next to her beloved husband.

Someone I love has gone away and life is not the same.
The greatest gift that you can give is just to speak her name.

I need to hear the stories and the tales of days gone past.
I need for you to understand these memories must last.

We can not make more memories since she's no longer here.
So when you speak of her to me, it is music to my ear.

This sad notice from Richard Shaw...regarding the passing of Mike Schackne BHS '63

I just got some very sad news to pass on to you all.
This is what I got from Rich Shaw...Jud

Jud:
Mike passed away Sat. Am around 5:30. He had been undergoing treatment for several months. It started with inability to breathe due to fluid in his lungs. Biopsy of lung tissue was sent all over the country with the help of Bob Reback, Dave's brother. Not one expert could determine what it was. They suspected mesothelioma but the chemotherapy given to him did not work. He got an infection in his colon as he was taking drugs with anti-bacterial properties which affects the immune system. He became weaker, lost his appetite, lost weight and was hospitalized. He and the family were told on the 22nd that there was nothing more they could do medically: it is terminal. Mike went home with hospice care, his choice, where he spent his last hours with his family by his side.

The funeral is today, the 27th at Mt. Sinai, Hollywood Hills, 3::00 p.m.

Kathryn Beaumont, BHS '55, was Alice in Wonderland

Old Photos Reveal How Disney’s Animators Used A Real-Life Model To Draw Alice In Wonderland

http://www.boredpanda.com/alice-wonderland-drawing-animation-technique-kathryn-beaumont/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=BPFacebook

Kathryn Beaumont, the actor who voiced both Alice in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and Wendy in Disney’s Peter Pan, also modeled for the animators. These old photos show how much effort was put into classical animation at the Disney studio, where artists were able to produce as many as 23-24 seconds of animation per week.

Walt Disney chose Beaumont to be the voice of Alice when she was just ten years old. He was so impressed by her looks that he chose her for the model of Alice. After Beaumont finished her studies she went on to become an elementary teacher, a career that lasted thirty years. She was named a “Disney Legend” by the Walt Disney Company in 1998.

Albert Harry Shabazian, BHS '66 (1948-2015)

Albert Harry Shabazian
Millville, CA
January 26th, 1948 -
September 16th, 2015

On Wednesday September 16th, 2015 Albert "Al" Harry Shabazian passed away at his home in Millville after a long battle with cancer. He was 67 years old. During Al's passing he was surrounded by family and love; his beloved wife of 45 years, Carol, was by his side, as was his brother-in-law and best friend of 55 years, Eddie.

Al was born in Los Angeles on Monday January 26th, 1948. Al grew up in Burbank, California with his three sisters (Nancy, Barbara, and Joyce) and Richard, his brother. He graduated from Burbank High School in 1966 and enrolled in Pierce Junior College shortly thereafter. After realizing college wasn't for him, he was drafted into the Vietnam War. During Al's years of service with the United States Army (1968-1969) he was combat wounded twice and was awarded two Purple Hearts. Al Shabazian was recognized as a "local war hero" by the "Burbank Leader" newspaper in 1969. Al was proud to have served his country in the United States Army and of the camaraderie and companionship he shared with his fellow soldiers both in Vietnam and back in the states years later.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Al married the love of his life and his girlfriend of five years; Carolyn (Nemecek) Shabazian in 1970. Al and Carol went on to have two children together; Lisa Lynn Shabazian (born 1973) and Albert Adam Shabazian (born 1976) before relocating their family to Northern California. Al's family was very important to him and raising his children in the best environment possible led him to move his wife and children to Palo Cedro, California in 1978. Being established as a knowledgeable, effective, personable, and humorous automotive mechanic enabled Al to embark on a 30 year career at Fritz's Auto Repair in Palo Cedro, until his retirement December 31st, 2008.

Al Shabazian was an avid hunter, fisherman and shooter. He looked forward to out of state big game hunts and weekend shooting with his son and grandsons. He loved hunting dogs and trained and enjoyed the companionship of two Weimaraners and a German Shorthair over his adult lifetime. Al was also a fan of music from the 1960's.

Al is preceded in death by both of his parents; Al and Agavine, his older sister Nancy, and his mother-in-law Marguerite (Watson) Nemecek.

Al is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol, his son Al, daughter-in-law Molly, his grandsons Conner and Cooper; from Millville, and his daughter Lisa from Quartz Hill, California.

Al Shabazian's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday September 26th, 2015 at 2:30 p.m at Millville Cemetery; located at 23799 Old 44 Drive, Millville, California 96062.

Flowers may be sent to the cemetery and are welcomed.

Donations in the name of Al Shabazian may be made to the Patriot Guard Riders.

"Always a Bulldog!"

Chuck excelled in high school as you can see from these photos in the 1965 Cerlabus yearbook...

2017 CRUISE IS OPEN TO ANYONE!

September 28, 2015 UPDATE

The class of '67 will be celebrating our 50th reunion in 2017 and is planning a fun filled cruise. Although we had previously voted on which cruise we wanted there was also an interest in an Alaskan cruise. Pricing was not available at the time for Alaska when we voted on the others so the Cruise Committee has decided to wait until pricing is available which should be soon. The three choices at the time of voting will be California Coastal, Alaska and Mexico. In the mean time - start saving your money. If you have any questions that you would like to ask the Cruise Committee and do not want to put it on Facebook you can send all correspondence to bhscruise@gmail.com. If you had previously voiced your interest through FB or at our last reunion you will be hearing from us through the above e-mail to ensure we have your correct contact information.

Your Cruise Committee,
Carol and Donna

It is with a heavy heart that I share Hailey's message about her Mom, Lynnell Henderson.
Having grown up across the street from the Henderson's, I find myself overcome with nothing but great memories of Lynnell and her family.
Having gone to Providencia, Luther, and Burbank High, Lynnell epitomizes what being a Burbanker is all about.
Rest in peace, dear Lynnell, and God's speed to the Henderson family.

Gail Hahn Crawford, BHS '72, Passed Away April 2015

Posted on Facebook in April 2015 from Gail's husband Robert Crawford.

Today April 2015 has been a sad day for me, my family and friends. My wife of almost 25 years, Gail Hahn, mother of four, grandmother of 1 and friend to countless others lost her battle with cancer. Her heart was large and her love was endless. We will miss her love and laughter most of all. She is in God's hands now, feeling His love, and surely looking down on us. We will endeavor to live up to the expectations, hopes and dreams she had for us.

A great man. Mr. Bertrand was my P.E. coach at John Muir Jr. High. I was also very fortunate to have him as both a friend and mentor for several years. My sincere sympathy to Mrs. Bertrand and family. Rest in peace, Mr. Bertrand. God bless you and your family.

CLOVENNE T. "TONI" CANNON
December 1923 ~ July 27, 2015
Mrs. Toni Cannon passed away this past Monday, July 27, 2015, at age 91.  She had suffered a broken hip a few months ago, followed by complications.  She passed away in Montrose under hospice care at a medical facility.
Mrs. Cannon taught at Burbank High School for 30 years from 1960 until her retirement in 1990.  Before teaching at BHS she taught at John Muir Junior High in Burbank for four years in the late 1950's.  At BHS she taught psychology, government, senior studies, senior seminar, and for four years she headed the BHS Career Center.  Several times over her years at BHS she was voted "favorite teacher" by the student body, and had Ceralbus yearbooks dedicated to her.  Mrs. Cannon attended the BHS '70 class reunions in 1990 and 2010.  She lived a very active life during her retirement years.
Mrs. Cannon had lived in La Crescenta for decades, and remained in her own home until just the past few months when her health began to decline.  She is survived by her daughter, Holly Cannon.  A memorial gathering will be held in her honor later on.

Mrs. Cannon was my senior seminar teacher and directed me to do great works for my project. She also taught a group of us how to do 1040Ez taxes (which at 17, seemed an impossible task). She taught me not to fear government and that I was a part of it and to stay involved. She was a great teacher!
