Sad news on October 22, 2020, from Phil Johnson, BHS '72 “I just heard Alan Moore, class of ‘68, passed away a short time ago tonight. No details as of now except when I spoke with him last month, he was feeling great and sounded like he always did. He and I were neighbors growing up on Fairmount Rd. I named my 2nd son after him. I’m in shock! Stage 4 lung cancer in remission... He retired years ago from many years with the Burbank Fire Dept. I feel a great loss. He was like a brother to me...” 

Alan had 2 siblings: Art Moore and Alice Moore. She was BHS '64.

Alan Scott "Al" Moore

 

Al died peacefully on October 22, 2020 at the age of 70 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Al was born to Betty and Ernie Moore in Burbank, California, and attended grade school, high school and community college in the area. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War and honorably served his country. After the war, Al returned to civilian life and his adventuresome spirit took him around the world as a river rafter, where he gained many lifelong friends. Continuing his need to serve, he joined the Burbank Fire Department and met his firefighting family. He loved his work and helping the community.

While a firefighter, Al married Anne Pugel, and his life was changed forever! Anne brought with her many siblings and Al grew to know and appreciate the chaos of large family gatherings. Anne and Al shared a love of travel and visited many continents in their 31-year marriage.

While Al spent most of his life in Southern California, he and Anne chose to retire in the Pacific Northwest on beautiful Camano Island. His last 14 years were spent traveling the world or hosting family and friends at their home. Whether it was for a casual dinner or a relaxing weekend, there was always room at "The Lodge."

Al was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Anne, his siblings, Alice Moore Robinson and Art Moore, and a large extended family. He will be remembered as a devoted and beloved husband, son, brother, brother-in- law, uncle, cousin, and friend.

  I knew Alan through his sister, Alice. We were Mariner Girl Scouts, in sister "ships". Their parents were also active in our GS adventures, so Alan would often tag along.   When I was 7, my family moved from Stockton to Burbank. One of the first people I met while at Emerson Elementary was Al. From then on, he and I were pretty much inseparable. He was my best friend growing up. These last two years have been very difficult for him after his cancer diagnosis. Through it all, his lovely wife Ann was by his side which is no surprise. She is a real gem. I talked to her after Al passed and she said that he went easily. She was supported by her sisters who have been watching over her during this time.

  I will miss my friend and my deepest sympathies go to Ann, Alice, and the rest of the family.

"It is with great sadness I announce the death of my brother Henry Harrison Hayden III on September 30, 2020. He was in the Burbank high school class of 1965."
  

 

Obituary
On the evening of September 30, 2020, Henry Harrison Hayden III (of Scottsdale) unexpecIIItedly passed away. He was only 73 years old. Henry was born to Henry and Peggy Hayden, in Burbank, CA, in 1947. Henry's parents were very active with the foreign exchange student organization AFS (American Field Service). During his high school years, he had foreign exchange students from all over the world that lived with the family; giving him a more culturally inclusive worldview. He graduated from Burbank High School in 1965. He was a proud alumnus of the University of Southern California (USC) and, after graduating, assisted foreign exchange students from all over the world with the (AFS) in New York City. He became a librarian at the Braille Institute in Los Angeles, CA, where he met the love of his life, Susie, whom he married in 1978. They raised two children together, Kimberly and Lindsay, in Scottsdale, where they have resided for 31 years. He was a librarian with the Arizona State Talking Book Library and with Chandler Public Library. He will be greatly missed by the thousands of readers whose lives were touched by his compassion and love for knowledge.

In his spare time, he enjoyed reading and meditation at the Franciscan Renewal Center. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved playing with his grandchildren, being in nature especially the ocean, playing with his animals.

Henry is preceded in death by his mother Peggy, his father, Henry, and his mother-in-law, Betty. He is survived by his wife Susie, his daughters, Kimberly and Lindsay, his son-in-law Christopher, his grandchildren, Shealeigh, Leighanna, and Everleigh, his sisters Barbara and Dena, his nieces Lizzy and Katie, and his nephews Daniel, Travis, Hayden, and Jake. He is also survived by several cousins as well as brothers and sisters-in-law.

A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, from 5-7 pm at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary located at 6500 E. Bell Rd with a rosary to follow the viewing. His funeral Mass will be Thursday, October 8th, at 10:30 am at the Church of Our Lady of the Angels (aka the Franciscan Renewal Center) located at 5802 E Lincoln, culminating with burial services at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Henry has met many wonderful people during his 73 years young. He loved service and he loved the people he served. He loved and will miss all of you.

Extending our sincerest condolences to the Hayden family. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. It's hard to find the words to exemplify what a great person Henry was. He was a kind, caring man and what a wonderful personality. My brother Adam knew him well in high school, and they periodically had discussions that would lead to solving all the world's problems. You could assemble a debate team of many so-called intellectuals, and none of them could match Henry. We used to work with him at Roger Jessups Dairy on Glenoaks, and Burbank Blvd. Henry was brilliant. He was also a gracious and modest guy who never exalted his brilliant mind and creative thoughts. He was one of those guys who was bored with school because he probably should have been teaching the classes. Henry had class, as cliched as that sounds. He cared about people, issues in life, and at the same time could take and give a joke or pun. His gregariousness and humor were never in short supply. He knew how to treat people well, and never condescended or was pretentious to anyone. Man, he had soul and a huge heart. This is a great loss and we will pray for his family that his spirit will remain as a beacon of what is right, what is moral, and what is decent about people. We live in tumultous times, and not having a guy like Henry around is a loss that is irreplaceable. God's grace be with him, and to the family we admired and adored Henry. We always thought he should go into politics, but regardless of what he did in life, Henry eclipsed them all. Again, we pray for the family in reverence and admiration at one of the best ever. Today I received the following email from Jacqueline Mylroie, Gerry’s daughter:

It is with great sadness I share the passing of my father, Gerald Richard Mylroie BHS class of '63. Dad didn't share much with us about his time in high school. I knew he reflected fondly as student body president with a classmate I was lucky to meet, Dave ReBack, their senior year. During this time he worked on a beautification project (so Dad!). He was on the golf team, played football, and had his first job mowing lawns up and down Delaware Rd. My brothers, Robert and John, and I welcome your stories and remembrance.

He has gone quietly to join his mother Grace and older brother Jim and all those friends and family who left before him.

GERALD'S OBITUARY
Gerald Richard Mylroie, 75, father of 3 children, husband to Elizabeth, passed away in his Cape Elizabeth home on August 20, 2020, surrounded by family. He was diagnosed three years ago with stage 4 glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.

Gerry was born June 30, 1945, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Lt. Col. Robert Joseph and Grace (Sill) Mylroie. He grew up in Burbank, California, and attended Burbank High School. He obtained a BS in Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona ('68), followed by MA in Planning Urban & Regional Environmental Design, USC ('70). Later, while living with his family and working in Chicago he completed an MBA, University of Chicago (‘86).

After moving to Washington D.C., he married Elizabeth Alma Silsby on September 1, 1979. Together they raised 3 children. He followed his passion with a lifelong career in city planning (AICP), design, and real estate which would take him from D.C. to Chicago, Connecticut and, for the past 20 years, Maine.

Gerry was involved with various planning committees and federal task forces on urban problems and policy development. He was especially proud of his support of the Nature Conservancy and was a longtime member of the Sierra Club.

In retirement, Gerry remained devoted to his family, landscape design, long walks at local beaches, scenic drives, fly fishing, touring ice cream stands, and Congdon’s Donut Shop in Wells. He was a Free Mason and member of the Triangle Lodge in Portland.

His family remembers him for always wanting to make the world a better and more beautiful place. His constantly positive outlook on life meant that each day began with “I will have a great day!” and he wished for each dinner to begin with dessert.

He is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 41 years, his son Robert and daughter-in-law Katie, his son John, his daughter Jacqueline, and two grandchildren, Vera and Oliver.

Raymond J Healey, class of BHS 1958, passed away on September 7, 2020, due to esophogeal cancer.

Jim led an adventurous life in the last 20 years flying around the world with other members of the National Audubon Society looking for birds. He was an employee and volunteer with the Henderson, Nevada Bird Preserve since his retirement. This was his passion. He was a certified master birder with the National Audubon Society. There was not a bird he could not identify. When his granddaughter, Emily, asked what his favorite bird was, Jim said "the one I haven't seen yet".

Jim is survived by his daughter Jennifer, son Jamie and four grandchildren: Kristina, Joseph, Emily and Jillian. Jim's partner on his 9 month journey was his ex-wife Mary Healey, class of BHS 1962.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I send this email. My father, Paul Ashley Hacker, passed away peacefully last night at 8:51 pm, three and a half years after his terminal Cancer diagnosis. He was surrounded in love and held in the arms of my mother, my brother, and myself on his journey home."

Paul is survived by wife Jill, children Dustin and Aubri, brother Pete (Henry Ernest) Hacker BHS '54 (?) and brother Dan Hacker BHS '72 along with 4 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents Robert and Ruby Hart Hacker, brother Walter Hacker BHS '61 and brother John Michael BHS '62.

 

Paul is greatly missed by many.

I last saw Paul at Kathleen Bryan’s Celebration of Life last November. He was still as handsome as I remembered him from High School. Every girls’ Dreamboat! He had looks, personality, charm and was always a gentleman. Paul always did the name tags for his Class of ‘65 Reunions. So glad I got to see & talk to him last November. For those of you who can still look back and remember your High School days, there were the Jocks, the Brainiacs, the Misfits and that select group of the really popular classmates. Paul Hacker was one of those guys that had it all! He was popular, good looking, friendly to everyone yet unpretentious. He had a smile for everyone and offered a kind word to all. Paul exemplified everything that was good about the BHS Class of ‘65. His dedication to the Reunion Committee was just another attribute to his personality. I am proud to have called him my friend.
