Genevieve Sultenfuss, local 'role model,' dies at 104
Pioneer was the first woman to lead the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

Longtime Glendale resident Genevieve Sultenfuss, who achieved several firsts for women in realty and community leadership, died on Sunday. She was 104.

Her legacy included serving as the first female president of both the Glendale Assn. of Realtors and later the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

"Genevieve was a kind soul, she was a wonderful role model, and a beautiful spirit," said Councilwoman Paula Devine during Tuesday's City Council meeting. "She touched a lot of lives in her 104 years. She will not be forgotten."

Sultenfuss was born on Aug. 12, 1910, in Colorado. She moved with her family to Burbank in 1923 and graduated from Burbank High School.

She worked as a legal secretary for 10 years before moving onto a career selling homes in Glendale.

In 1955, she opened her own realty firm, Glendale Properties Inc., and worked in real estate for 30 years before retiring.

She was president of the Realtor association in 1968 and recalled in a 2005 interview with the News-Press what it was like to be in that kind of role while she was surrounded predominantly by men.

"I just worked and worked and when people asked me to do something, I didn't know how to say 'no,'" Sultenfuss said. "I took it very slowly at first and didn't want to try and dictate to all these men what to do."

She was also named Realtor of the Year by the association in 1972.

Rick Barnes, the association's current president, said he first met Sultenfuss in 1976 and referred to her as a "stateswoman" for her decades of community involvement.

"For me, she was the standard of excellence as a leader," he said in a phone interview. "She had a code of excellence and she lived it."

Sultenfuss also won the Woman of Achievement award in 1977, bestowed by the News-Press.

She was named president of the chamber of commerce that year and was a past president of Soroptomist International of Glendale, a volunteer organization for business and professional women, which she joined in 1961 and was a member of for 50 years.

Sultenfuss was also the first woman to earn the Glendale Bar Assn.'s Liberty Bell Award.

A big party in 2010 honoring Sultenfuss' 100th birthday was held at the local Elk's Lodge with more than 250 close friends and family in attendance.

The City Council adjourned in her memory on Tuesday.

As a past chair of the city's Commission on the Status of Women, Devine said she once named Sultenfuss as the chair's Jewel in honor of her life's work.

During the council meeting, Devine fondly recalled another milestone for women Sultenfuss accomplished — being the first female member of the all-male Verdugo Club.

"She felt that there would be some concern if she let people know, so every time she went to a meeting, she would take a male guest so that everyone would think he was the member and she was the guest," Devine said. "That was her sense of humor."

Funeral arrangements are still pending and Sultenfuss' family members are encouraging donations be made in her honor to Soroptomist International of Glendale.

Jean Depp Ponek wrote, "My Uncle Scott Royle passed away today, November 20, 2014 from a heart attack. This was a picture I found, my mom will be emailing me a better picture after everything has settled down. Scott graduated in in 1969 from Burbank High. He was 64. Scott coached numerous Softball teams in Burbank I believe all of them were named the Roadrunners! Go Roadrunners!!!!"

It'll be forty-eight years on the planet in June, so perhaps it's time for an inventory...

Things i'm not so proud of: selling cars for fifteen years, flunking out of college three times, being a chronic procrastinator, and never learning how to juggle.

Things i'm proud of: the three and a half years i spent in the Air Force walkin' dogs, being married to the same woman since 1970, having two teenage sons who will become good men, going back to college for the fourth time, becoming a teacher, and having the nerve to revisit those demons and write "War Story."

Things i plan to do: graduate with a degree in history in June 1996; teach till i die; teach the grandkids to body surf; learn to juggle; get regular haircuts; live in Redlands, California, for the rest of my life; and write something else i'll be proud of.

I'm building a Web page based on "War Story" and the K-9 experience. I need pictures of Angeles City - Clark AB circa 1969, poems, essays, photos about dog handlers and the Vietnam era...full credit to everyone and everything will be returned unharmed.

JANUARY 20, 2016 UPDATE

Received the following information today from William's wife, Jolene:

My late husband, William D. Caughey, passed on October 23, 2005. He was residing in Redlands, California at the time.

Both of us were in the class of 1966 BHS. We never dated in high school, but he sat behind me, alphabetical order, my name being Canzoneri, his Caughey.

We saw each other when he was home on leave from the Air Force in 1968 (Vietnam War). We communicated by letters and tapes for the next two years, and were married on May 30, 1970. Had he lived, we would have been married 46 years, this May 2016. I still have his tapes and letters from that very special time. 

He leaves two children, William D. Caughey, Jr, BD 11-25-1977, and Robert J. Caughey, BD, 7-27-1979. Robert gave us two beautiful grand-daughters Avery age 6, and Taylor age 3.

To this date, he is sorely missed.

May 25, 1942 - September 19, 2014

Jeanie Larson passed away unexpectedly at her family home in Burbank, California on September 19, 2014. She was looking forward to returning to an active life after having partial knee replacement surgery when a postoperative complication caused her untimely death. Her entire family is deeply mourning her loss, yet knowing Jeanie would want them to celebrate the life that she so joyfully embraced, surrounded by the love of family, friends, and community.

Jeanette Elizabeth Detweiler was born on May 25, 1942, in Lansing, Michigan to Dorothy Elizabeth Wiebe and James Irvin Detweiler. Jeanie grew up in Burbank with her two brothers, Douglas and Richard, attending Brett Hart and Providencia elementary schools, John Muir Junior High School, and Burbank High School (Class of 1960). As a youth she was involved in various school activities, the First United Methodist Church, and the Burbank Chapter of National Charity League, of which she was a founding member.

After high school, Jeanie attended California Western University, and the University of Redlands where she met the love of her life William “Bill” Larson, college roommate of her brother Doug. Jeanie and Bill married in 1962, starting their married life in on-campus barracks housing. After college, they moved to Long Beach, returning to Burbank where they raised three children, Michael, Shaunna, and Stephanie.

With a bachelor’s degree and teaching credential, Jeanie taught briefly and then turned her full attention to her growing family, friends and community. She was known for her positive personality, sparkling sky blue eyes and radiant smile. Jeanie cared deeply about everyone she knew and spread her positive energy wherever she went. Raised with a strong desire to help others, she spent her life offering her smile and help to those around her. Jeanie was proud to be a member of P.E.O., a women’s organization dedicated to raising money for women’s education and National Charity League, which she was thrilled to have shared with her mother and daughters. A businesswoman at heart, she used her skills to successfully guide the family property management business.

Married to Bill for 52 years, her family was her most cherished life achievement. She and Bill were delighted to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary with their children and grandchildren on a safari to Africa.

She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, family and friends. Her family includes her children: Michael Larson (Melinda) of Palm Desert, Shaunna Raab (Michael) of Burbank, and Stephanie Larson of Burbank, grandchildren: Shea and Danica Larson, Zane and Cassandra Raab, and Natalia and Aaron Ortiz. Her brothers, Doug (Ingrid) and Rick (Carol), now live in Massachusetts and Michigan.

We will be celebrating the life of Jeanie Larson on Saturday, October 4th, 2014, at 1:30 PM at the Burbank First United Methodist Church, 700 North Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank, California 91502. Her family invites you to join them, bringing your joyful memories with you.

Jeanie’s family has chosen two memorials close to her heart. A “P.E.O. Star Scholarship,” supporting young women entering college, will be named in her memory (P.E.O. c/o 3113 N. Naomi Street, Burbank, CA 91504). Contributions in her memory may also be made to the “Burbank First United Methodist Church” (700 North Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank, California 91502).

And Then it's Winter or the Back Nine

AND THEN IT IS WINTER

You know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.

It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate.

Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is - the ' back nine' of my life and it catches me by surprise. How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember vividly seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that 'I was only on the first hole' and the 'back nine' was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But, here it is . . . my friends are retired and getting grey. They move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me, but I see the great change.

Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant . . . but like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day!

And taking a nap is not a treat anymore . . . it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will, I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so, now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!

But, at least I know, that though I’m on the ' back nine' and I'm not sure how long it will last, this I know for sure, that when it's over on this earth . . . it's over. A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done . .. . things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not on the ' back nine' yet . . . let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you’re on the 'back nine' or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life . . . so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember, and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

ENJOY TODAY!
DO SOMETHING FUN!
BE HAPPY!
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
Remember, "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver."

~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.
~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"!
~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.
~Everybody whispers.
~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet . . . 2 of which you will never wear.

~ But Old is good in some things, Old Songs, Old Movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS.
