"On April 17, 2010, the city of Burbank honored the memory of my cousin, Larry L. Maxam, by naming a park after him. It was a wonderful ceremony where hundreds turned out to pay their respects to this brave Marine. The ceremony was attended by several surviving members from the battle where Larry lost his life. The battle at Cam Lo. Larry is the only Burbank native ever to receive the Medal of Honor."

Donna Quick Watkins, BHS '63 (1944 - 2012)

Donna was born on December 13, 1944, in Burbank, California and passed away on January 3, 2012, in Westlake Village, California, at the age of 67. She lived and attended school in Burbank, graduating from Burbank High School in 1963.

Donna married Grant Finster in 1965 and they moved to Newbury Park shortly after they got married, where they soon started a family. First, daughter Josephine was born in 1967 and two years later, son Jeffrey would join the family.

They were very active in the Church of Latter-Day Saints ward and made life-long friends. Camping at Leo Cabrillo Beach was a favorite activity that Donna, her family and her LDS family and friends enjoyed for many years and some are still enjoying to this day.

After marrying Lawrence Watkins in 1974, Donna gave birth to daughter Amy in 1975.

She and her family moved to Las Vegas, Utah and back to California, where she was the happiest, being closer to her many friends. Donna loved collecting turtles, live, ceramic, and wooden, at one time had over 1000 turtles in her collection. She also was a very talented seamstress, making clothes and costumes for her children and grandchildren. Another passion was baking, particularly gingerbread houses at Christmas time. She especially enjoyed teaching others how to make this holiday decoration. Donna was a loving and giving person and loved her family and friends with all her heart, especially her children and grandchildren.

Surviving Donna are daughter Jodi (husband Kevin) Keller of Newbury Park, son Jeff Finsterof Hesperia, and daughter Amy (partner/wife Gia de Leon)Watkins of Rancho Cucamonga. Grandchildren include Cassity Keller, Rachel Williams, Michael and Jared Finster. Also surviving Donna are sisters Diana Johnson, Dawn Livingston and brother David Cooper along with many nieces and nephews.

With friends too numerous to name, we'd like to acknowledge the Peterson's , the Barker's, Kenny Estep and Helen Belsheim Moore as some of Donna's most treasured people in her life.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 6, 2012, at the Newbury Park Stake Building, Newbury Park, with viewing at 1 p.m. and services beginning at 2 p.m. Internment will be Monday, January 9th, time will be given upon request, at the Green Hills Cemetery in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Mr. Leon Frankamp taught photography and JV basketball at Burbank High.

I must confess that I never had Mr. Leon Frankamp as a teacher, but I was most surprised (and delighted!) to find out that he has discovered this blog. In case you don't remember, Mr. Frankamp taught Photography and Junior Varsity Basketball. He must have made a big impression on his students, one of whom was Gregory Robinson (BHS'69), a professional photographer who tragically was gunned down in the jungles of Guyana, South America in 1978 during the Jonestown fiasco. Closer to home, though, Mr. Frankamp had both my brothers in his class (Jim Au, BHS'76 and Rick Au, BHS'80) and to this day, Jim and Rick are the family photographers.

He wrote me an extensive update on his activities which I would like to share with you here. His first comment to the blog was "WOW!! This is most interesting!" He and his wife, both teachers, retired in 1989. He spent 20 years working as a construction supervisor for Habitat for Humanity, Collegiate Challenge program in Clarksdale, Mississippi. In that program, he was responsible for 32 houses and supervised over 2000 students from about 100 schools.

In 1982 he and his wife built their retirement cabin in Pine Mountain and still live there, doing outreach, helping folks needing firewood, food and other needs they can provide. They are both blessed with health, with no pills or pain. They have two daughters who live in Burbank and a grandson who is a sophomore at Burbank High School and another grandson who teaches math "at the other high school."

My brother Jim says, "Without any question, he was a great teacher. He was always fair with all the students. He is still an outstanding example of someone whose life and character I want to emulate."

A year after breaking ground on a $12-million overhaul of Memorial Field, Burbank Unified is preparing to dedicate the athletic facility.

District officials have issued an open invitation for the Feb. 25 ribbon-cutting ceremony at Burroughs High School, while also continuing to solicit donations for the ongoing maintenance of the field.

Community members who wish to have their name inscribed on one of five donor walls at the site in time for the event must contribute at least $500 by Jan. 30, officials said. The names of those who donate thereafter will be added later.

“In times like this, it is hard for people to part with their money,” said Judie Wilke, chairwoman of Burbank Priority in Education, a foundation that helped mobilize fundraising for the project. “But if all of us can do a little part in a bigger picture, in the long run that is how communities become better.”

The renovation is the last in an $18.5-million, three-phase capital improvement project that saw the modernization of crumbling athletic facilities at Jordan Middle School and Burbank and Burroughs high schools.

When it opens next month, Memorial Field will boast a new athletic field with artificial turf and an all-weather track, as well as new bleachers, lighting, restrooms and concession stands. The joint-use project was funded by Burbank Unified, the city of Burbank and donations from local businesses and residents.

“I think Burbank is really going to have an opportunity to promote itself as a fitness community, having the two high school and Jordan Middle School tracks done,” said Burroughs Principal Emilio Urioste. “People are going to be walking [at Memorial Field] after work.”

The theme of the dedication ceremony will be consistent with the original event, which took place in 1946 and honored members of the armed services, particularly those from Burbank.

“It was really to honor two Burroughs Junior High teachers that had died in World War II, along with Burroughs students who had died in World War II,” Urioste said.

The original plaque bearing the names of the World War II veterans has been refurbished and will be reinstalled at the site, he said.

Community fundraising efforts have generated $650,000, officials said, including a $300,000 gift from the Cusumano family, which has had more than a dozen members graduate from Burroughs High School. The Burbank Health Foundation donated $200,000, and Disney donated $50,000.

Contributors have an opportunity to put their name on a state-of-the-art facilitiy, said Michael Hastings, a former Burbank mayor and founder of Burbank Priority in Education. The fundraising goal is $1 million, he added.

“[Donors] become part of the legacy, and Burbank has such a strong legacy when it comes to honoring those who have gone before us, and those who have served in the armed services,” Hastings said.

I regret to advise you that my sister, Jill Barnett Barnfather, passed away unexpectedly on December 26 in Portland, Oregon.

Jill was a passionate quilter, gardener and home decorator and loved by everyone in her family.

In recent years she left Southern California and lived with my Mother in Seaside, Oregon, enjoying the coastal Oregon lifestyle.

Farewell, Jim Castro (1949-2011)

Even though we received news of the passing of James (Jim) Castro last fall, we are announcing it to our class just now. Here's some information about him from the Burbank City Employee Association:

James Castro (Jim) joined the City of Burbank on October 4, 1967, as a Park & Recreation Aide. He was just 18 years old. Jim continued to work for the Park, Recreation and Community Service Department (PRCS) as a Work Trainee II until he went into the military on April 1, 1968. Jim returned to the City in April, 1973 and worked as a Groundsman in the Comprehensive Employment & Training Act Program for PRCS. A year later, Jim was hired permanently as a Skilled Worker in that same section. On July 1, 1979, Jim made a change and joined Burbank Water & Power (BWP) as a Lineman Helper.

In March, 1981, Jim switched over to the Electrical section of BWP as an Electrician Helper. He continued to work in this area and promoted to Utility Electrician, Electrician, and in June 2000, he promoted to the position of Test Technician. He had truly found his niche working as a Test Technician and remained in the position until his retirement in July of 2008. He enjoyed working with customers and received many kudos from satisfied Burbank customers. Jim seemed to be most happy when he was making his friends and coworkers smile and laugh. His own smile lit up a room and will be remembered by all!

Jim passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Jim leaves behind his wife, Suzann; daughters Jessica, Jasmine, and Jenny; mother Graciela; brothers Anthony and Michael; son-in-law Brandyn; and grandsone Matthew.

He attended the 40th Class Reunion and I remember speaking to him at length. According to his cousin, Virginia Castro, who also graduated with our class of '68, Jim died of a brain tumor.

We express our deepest sympathy to his family.

Goss, Joseph R., 82, September 23, 1929 - December 23, 2011

Joseph Goss of Huntington Beach, CA, died following heart valve surgery. Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janice; son Matthew; daughter Sharilyn Goss Castro, granddaughter Emily Reese Castro, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Reese Stotts Goss, and Eugene M. Goss, his brother Eugene M. Goss Jr., and his sister Mary Goss Barren.

Joe would say he had a great life. He started out poor; he got up at 3A.M. as a youth to deliver the L. A. Times and gave his earnings to his mother. As an adult, Joe has traveled around the world, visited the North Pole, Antarctica and scores of countries and islands in between.

Joe was raised in Burbank, CA, graduating from Burbank High School. He served as an infantryman in Korea in 1951 and earned a BS in Engineering from USC in 1959. While at USC he worked summers at Rocketdyne Division of North American Aircraft Corp. He retired in 1996 from North American Aircraft Division as Vice President. His career began on the J-2 Rocket Engine and progressed with increasing responsibility. He was the B-1B Proposal Manager and upon contract award became Vice President and Associate Program Manager.

Joe climbed and explored the eastern Sierras, California desert ranges and the mountains, mesas and canyons of the Four Corners region. He enjoyed reaching the summits as well finding ancient habitation sites and astronomical observatories. He provided his site survey reports to specialists for detailed exploration of the area.

He will be sorely missed by his loving family and many friends.

Robert D. "Bob" Richards passed away at his home in Lander Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 4, 2011. He was 83.

Military Honors are at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Fremont County Veterans' Memorial at the courthouse in Lander. Military honors will be by the Lander Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Robert Duane Richards was born in Norfolk, Neb., on May 17, 1928, the son of Chas and Irene (Green) Richards. At the age of three, the family moved to Burbank, Calif. He resided there until 2006 when the family moved to Lander.

In 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 21. He attained the rank of Sergeant as a forward observer. He returned stateside in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1956.

He married Pavilowa Ruth Ann "Peggy" Bickel on March 19, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Burbank, Calif.

Bob was a professional truck driver working as a teamster for 33 years. He started as a machinist, was a mechanic, and drove truck for Hostess Bakeries for 32 years.

He was a member of the Southwest Administrators Teamsters and a life-member of the National Rifle Association.

His family said Bob collected trains, enjoyed politics, loved fishing, skeet shooting, was a mechanic, enjoyed being the family comedian, loved cars and built race cars as a youngster. They said "his biggest hobby was his family."

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Peggy Richards; daughter, Lucinda "Cindy" Richards; three grandchildren, Guy and Robyn Donovan, Steven and Paula Donovan, and Mandy and Josh Hahn; two great grandchildren, Sean Donovan and Angelina Sisul; all of Lander; sisters-in-law, Betty Romero and Joan During, both of California.

Mr. Richards was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Claire Hoover; a brother, Jerry Richards; and brother-in-law, Robert Bickel.

Memorials may be made to Amedisys Hospice or the NRA, in care of the Davis Funeral Home, 2203 West Main Street, Riverton, WY 82501.

The Tournament of Roses has unveiled a full slate of activities in the days leading up to and after the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl on Monday, Jan. 2.

From Thursday through Saturday, the public can view Rose float decorating at three locations, the Rose Palace at 835 S. Raymond Ave., the Rosemont Pavilion at 700 Seco St., and Brookside Pavilion on the south side of Rose Bowl, 1001 Rose Bowl Drive. Decorating takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults. Children under 5 are free.

The Brookside Pavilion site will also offer the public views as the official cars of the Rose Parade are decorated.

From 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, Rose Queen Drew Washington and the members of the Royal Court open the visitor hotline by taking calls from the public. The queen will be at the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E. Green St.

On Friday at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, the horses who are stars of the parade will be on display at Equestfest. The horses will perform in the equestrian arena from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $15. Children under 5 get in free.

Also on Friday, the first Bandfest show takes over Robinson Stadium at Pasadena City College, 1570 E. Colorado Blvd. Seven of the bands that will march in the parade will perform from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Performers include the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Band; the Salvation Army Tournament of Roses Band; the Los Angeles Unified School District All District High School Honor Band; the Arcadia High School Apache Marching Band; Banda Escolar de Guayanilla; the Mercer Island High School Marching Band; and the All-Lubbock High School Westerner Band.

Tickets are $15. Children under 5 get in free.
Bandfest 2 and Bandfest 3 hit the stadium at Pasadena City College on Saturday. The first show, from 9 a.m. to noon, features the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Band; the Siloam Springs High School Band; the Needham B. Broughton High School Band; the Crestview High School Marching Band; the Calgary Stampede Showband; the Kyoto Tachibana High School Green Band; and the Avon High School Marching Black & Gold Band.

The second show, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., features Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Band; the Royal Swedish Navy Cadet Band; the Ben Davis High School Marching Giants; the American Fork High School Marching Band; the Pulaski High School Red Raider Marching Band; the Franklin Regional High School Marching Band; and the University of Oregon Marching Band.
Tickets are $15. Children under 5 get in free.

On Saturday float and care decorating continue on a limited schedule. Rosemont Pavilion will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Rose Palace from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Car decorating takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rose Bowl Stadium lot 1.

Tickets are $10 for adults. Children under 5 are free.

The Rose Bowl Kickoff luncheon takes place in Rose Bowl Stadium Lot K at noon on Saturday. Celebrity sportscasters present University of Wisconsin and University of Oregon caches, athletes, marching bands and pep squads, the Rose Queen and Royal Court, as well as the new members of the Rose Bowl Game Hall of Fame.

Tickets are $90.

The 123^rd Rose Parade begins at 8 a.m. Monday with 44 floats, 22 equestrian units and 21 marching bands marching the 5.5.-mile route.

At 1:30 p.m. the Wisconsin Badgers clash with the Oregon Ducks at the Rose Bowl. For tickets and more information, visit www.tournamentofroses.com.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 2 and 3, post-parade events include a showcase floats at two sites: Sierra Madre Boulevard between Washington Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue; and on Washington between Sierra Madre and Woodlyn Road.

The Burbank Bike Angels, a group of volunteers who restore bicycles for needy youth in the community, delivered close to 150 bikes to the Salvation Army on Monday.

The Burbank Bike Angels, a group of volunteers who restore bicycles for needy youth in the community, delivered close to 150 bikes to the Salvation Army on Monday.

Lt. Kari Rudd of the Salvation Army Burbank Corps Community Center said it is the third year bikes have been donated to the center. The first year, about 10 bikes were collected. That figure grew to 67 last year, and then to 146 this year.

The city of Burbank collects the bikes — usually second-hand — from the public, while members of the police and fire unions donate money for safety equipment and parts. The Salvation Army and other volunteers help with refurbishing the bikes, Rudd said.

Dave Campbell, BHS Class 1965, Passed Away Today

Cathy did you or John know Dave Campbell? He was in the class of '65 but did not graduate with us because he moved away mid year. His Father was the Pastor of the Presbyterian Church across from BHS until they moved. Dave passed away this morning of a heart attack.

So sad to hear that. I found this photo in the 1963 Ceralbus. You guys would have been in the 10th grade. Couldn't find his photo in the 1964 or 1965 Ceralbuses... Let me know if they are planning services in the area so that we can post it.

I just talked to Jennifer Todd. Yes, I was correct that Jay Campbell was the founding pastor of Bethany Presbyterian at Glenoaks and Tulare. She was sorry to hear that his son passed away today. She isn't sure if Jay is still living or not. As said earlier, if he has died it is within the last four years from when I saw him in October of 2007 at the dedication service for Calvary Chapel Burbank who now owns the former Bethany Presbyterian property. At that time his wife was still living, too. They both looked great, even for people younger than they actually were. I think Jay was around 96 at that time. He preached a short message, along with his remarks for Calvary Chapel's dedication! Possibly Dave was with them that evening, since I remember some of their family was with them and were introduced. In 2007 Jay and his wife lived in Orange County, I think Huntington Beach maybe. I believe Bethany Presbyterian was founded and built about 1948. So, if Jay Campbell left there in 1964 or 1965 he was the pastor at Bethany for 16 or 17 years.

Karry Ann McEntire Hughes, BHS '66 (1948-1985)

Today, we received the following from Thomas and Sharon McEntire via Alan Landros:

Thom's sister, Karry Ann McEntire Hughes, class of 1966, was born January 30, 1948, at Queen of Angeles hospital in Los Angeles. She moved to Burbank when she was 13 and went to John Muir and BHS. She married Michael Hughes from Texas and they had one son, Donald Hughes. In the late 70's they moved to Oregon.

Tragically, at age 37, Karry was killed in a motorcyle accident on July 16, 1985 in Salem, Oregon. Her husband, Mike, was driving the bike and a car did not see them. It turned left right in front of them and Mike didn't even have time to break. He was seriously injured but survived and unfortunately for Karry, she was thrown from the bike, broke her neck and died instantly.

It has been a very long time since we connected. We wish it were under happier circumstances that we are sending out this "Special Loop", which actually continues to be on hiatus...

We received the following news from our friend and classmate, Mickey DePalo '64...

Hi Pam and Jon,
Another member of Burbank High, class of 1964, has passed away. Marc Cutter passed away on December 5th, 2011. Marc has been living in Mariposa, California, near Fresno, for the past several years. He and his wonderful wife, Karen, called it their dream home. They were very happy living there, and made periodic trips to Burbank to see friends and Marc's sister, Carol Finkle, BHS, class of '62. Marc was a VERY PROUD Vietnam Veteran. Marc was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, with a Silver Star, three Soldiers Medals, and a Purple Heart among his many decorations. Marc was an outstanding example of a Vietnam veteran who came home, raised a family, and made many great contributions to his community. Marc cared for the welfare of not only veterans, but also for the welfare of everyone he encountered. Marc was also a valuable member of the City of Burbank Veterans Commemorative Committee. He and his wife Karen came up with the idea of shipping items to the men and women serving overseas soon after 9/11. They came up with the name Hands Across the Battlefield. The program has met with a great deal of success and through the generosity of the Burbank residents and surrounding communities, there has been over 40 tons of health and comfort items sent overseas. This would never have happened if not for Marc and Karen.

There will be a memorial service for Marc at the McCambridge Park War Memorials located at Amherst and San Fernando Road in Burbank, on Sunday December 18, 2011, at 1:00 p.m.

I ask everyone to keep Marc, his wife Karen, his children and grandchildren, his sister, Carol, and his entire family in their prayers.

Jon and I certainly have lots of happy memories of Marc. He was our building inspector when we added on to our home over 25 years ago...He was in the elevator at St. Jo's Hospital, bringing a new baby home, when we were bringing our twins home. Marc was at so many of the Veterans' Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies at McCambridge over the years...He worked tirelessly to make sure our troops were remembered with packages from "Hands Across the Battlefield"...He was a "Hometown Hero", for sure...

Those of you in the Burbank vicinity, please take time to stop by the McCambridge Park War Memorials on Sunday, Dec. 18th, 1p.m. to remember and honor our friend, Marc Cutter and to pay our respects to his family.

Jon and I also want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Blessed Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year...and to also remind you who have, for one reason or another, neglected to attend your Burbank High School Reunions...Plan to go to your next one...We are losing so many of our dear friends...don't wait until it is too late.

Brad Bartsch passed away November 15, 2011 due to liver failure. Brad's brother, Brian Bartsch, BHS '70, passed away October 9, 2005 at age 53. While growing up in Burbank they lived on Hilton Dr. They attended Thomas Jefferson Elementary, John Muir, and BHS. Both of them lived in Lakeview Terrace until their deaths.

Just received the sad news from Guy Gingell, BHS '66, that Joan Miller Gordon, BHS '69, passed away last night, November 30, 2011, after a long illness. A close friend said that Joan had multiple health problems throughout her life.

Joan went all the way through school in Burbank at Thomas Jefferson Elementary, John Muir, and BHS.

Dave Nichols informs us that Don Smith lost his battle with cancer last Friday morning.

There will be a graveside service on Monday, November 28th, at 3:00pm, at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

City Seeks Input on Ten Year Strategic Plan

BURBANK, Calif. (November 8, 2011) - The second draft of the City of Burbank's revised ten year Strategic Plan for 2011-2021, currently titled "Our Plan, Our Future, Our Burbank," is now available for public review and input.

Every 10 years, the City embarks on developing a new Strategic Plan that will serve as the foundation and vision for the City's operations for the next decade. The second draft, which now reflects additional feedback from City Council and the public since the special study session held in Council Chambers on September 29, 2011, was initially developed from input received by the City's Boards and Commissions, the 2010 Citizen Survey, and each City department. The proposed plan is comprised of ten overriding goals, accompanied by several objectives, that the City will be looking to achieve. Additionally, a revised mission statement has been created to more appropriately guide the City's operations and reflect the community's values. The full report is available here on the City's website and hard copies can be viewed at the reference desk of the three public libraries and the City Clerk's Office.

The City of Burbank encourages its citizens and business owners to participate in this process which will direct the City's operations for the next ten years. Comments can be left on the survey page on the City's website, www.BurbankUSA.com. Additionally, please join us in Council Chambers on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. as the City Council will deliberate adopting the proposed plan for 2011-2021.

Edward William "Bill" Walters, BHS '62
January 19, 1944 - September 30, 2011

Bill Walters, Class of 1962, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2011, in the hospital near his home in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii at age 67. Three days earlier, in the evening of September 27, Bill collapsed at his home from a massive heart attack. Everyone who had seen him earlier that day thought he looked fine. He was on life support for the three days in the hospital until his passing. Bill's girlfriend of over nineteen years, Akemi, who was also his business partner, was told by doctors that two of the arteries to Bill's heart were completely blocked/occluded. Bill's father died at about age 35 from heart trouble.

Bill had lived in Woodland Hills many years ago before moving to Ventura to be near some of the surfing locations that he surfed at. During those years he worked as a stock broker. Over twenty years ago he moved to Maui. There he and Akemi had their own business.

Bill Walters had survived several health problems in the past, including cancer of the esophagus. About ten years ago he had triple bypass heart surgery. Recently he had been scheduled for shoulder surgery, but during the presurgery tests it was found that he needed heart surgery once again. Before that took place he suffered the massive heart attack that took him. Akemi and Bill had recently been on a trip to Turkey and Italy, and he had no problems while traveling on that trip.

There was a beautiful ocean ceremony at the time that Bill's cremated remains were placed at sea near his home on Maui. Two canoes went out with the cremains while a friend blew a conch shell horn during the ceremony. Those had been Bill's wishes for the time of his death.

Besides Akemi, Bill is survived by a sister, Karen Madsen, BHS '67, who lives in California near the Colorado River and a niece, Kelly Baker of Ventura, California.

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY 2011

Once again the alertness of The Museum Community has added another part of the endlessly interesting picture that is San Fernando Valley history. This time it comes from a 1964 Burbank High School "Ceralbus" yearbook on its way to a thrift shop. Here are two great photos from the yearbook. The summer came and Cathy won two gold medals in the Tokyo Games; one in the 200 meter backstroke and another as part of the 100 meter relay. (click on this image to enlarge)

Burbank High School boys, Tom Bradstock and Bob Steele look for their scores. They came in first and second. A new swimming pool at the Burbank YMCA (today the Y) caused an explosion of interest in swimming by school kids in the mid 1960s.

As a new school year comes quickly out-of-the-blocks I recall how fortunate I was to have been influenced by many inspirational people. Of course, that translates into stories amigo/a. I was far from being a good student in my formative years (BC: before college); in fact I was a poor student K-12. But, I always loved a good story (probably why I majored in History as an undergrad). I don’t know if losing a full GPA point when moving into the Burbank (CA) School District, then gaining it back when moving to Malibu/Santa Monica SD, and losing it again when returning to Burbank was a product of Burbank’s superior expectations or simply that I preferred the open space environs of other locales.

Our kennel in was at Pacific Coast Hwy & Puerco Canyon Rd. overlooking the Pacific. In Burbank it was on North Lima St. just off San Fernando Road, in an industrial area near Lockheed and a railroad line; far away there were probably large bombers and missiles with Red Stars on them practicing missions targeting this area. Like many classmates, I never did understand how getting under a wooden desk would help.

In retrospect it was a cool time, and a great place to be a young person. As I worked this past spring in Petra I remember a conversation with a Supervisory Park Ranger. He was Bedouin from Umm Sahyoun, and a retired Army Major with a Masters degree in IT Engineering. We were talking about the local schools and need for charter or magnet schools with extra-circular activities like sports, clubs, etc. as stay-in-school incentives vice working the tourist trade as a child vendor. That got me pondering some life experiences, and one of my favorites is the under-dog story of the Burbank High School (BHS) Bulldogs basketball team of 1965.

Burbank schools were not traditional powers in the primary team sports: baseball, basketball and football. We had a few exceptional individuals occasionally, but we primarily excelled in Cross Country and swimming (individual things that took a lot of determination and training to do well). During my senior year we had a good shoot-the-ball/hoops team led by Coach Jack Loutensock, but they weren’t expected to do much because of the talent at the other Foothill League schools.

Note-on-skill-levels at that time in the Foothill League: during the 3-years I was at BHS, 7 football players went onto the NFL- none from BHS. In basketball, the league was equally gifted. The Southern California player of the year (Lynn Shackelford, 6’5”) was from Burbank, but he played for our cross-town rival John Burroughs HS. He was amazing to watch, and went onto being a starter on 3 Collegiate National Championship teams with Coach John Wooden at UCLA. Later he played in the NBA. Many of BHS’ rival teams in the league had 7’ players; some like Pasadena had several. I remember watching them warm up with player-after-player dunking-the-ball. The ’65 Bulldogs were relatively “vertically challenged,” with the tallest player (Dick Reitherman) at 6’4” and 170 lbs: not exactly a Grecian model of Olympus revisited. But, what these Bulldogs lacked in stature and girth they made up for with heart, determination, game smarts and grit. BHS educational standards were probably a pretty big asset too.

Not picked to do much by the pre-season pundits (they went 9-3 in pre-season), the ‘65 Bulldogs were simply tenacious, beating Burroughs twice for the 1^st time in many years, and finished 10-2 in league play: Champions of the Foothill League. Jim Greenfield and John Gaball went on to play for Coach Jerry Tarkanian (“Tark the Shark”). The season provided adversity, drama and accomplishment over long-odds won by hard work and dedication to their mission: sounds like an inspirational story to me. I know there are themes of courage and humor too (one player wrote in my ‘64 year book what a good chemistry student I was: I was terrible to put it kindly). Looking at the BHS ’65 Varsity Basketball photo I think: “Thank You gentlemen… especially John Gaball, Jim Greenfield, Jerry Perkins, Glen Ceiley, Dean DeHart, Darryl Hove, and Dick Reitherman for showing that when motivated you can make-it-happen…”

FYI, my BHS ’65 yearbook (Ceralbus) has been in an alternative reality somewhere since ca. my return from

Vietnam

(’70). Thanks to Kirk “Kickin’-back” Harris (I spotted you there in-the-shade: color football/sports section photo, shortly after page 183) for lending me his yearbook for some of the photos. I also see again in the Senior Index that I’m credited with 3-years of participation with the Publicity Committee that I have zero memory of. I just wanted to let you know that we have scheduled the memorial service and celebration of Dad's life for Saturday, October 15th at 11:00 A.M. It will be at Emmanuel Church, 5th and Harvard in Burbank. There will also be a reception following the service in Elizabeth Hall at the church.

Those former BHS students, basketball players, Tahquitz Pines Camp alumni, paddle ball competitors and any and all of the special people who loved my Dad would be welcome to attend if they are able to. It would be wonderful to see everyone......kind of like a mini-reunion. I know so many of our former classmates and Dad's students live far away from Burbank (including you, my dear friend!) and would not be able to make the trip so I would just ask that you all maybe take a minute that day and think of my Dad. I hope that would put a smile on your face..................nothing would make him happier!

It's 3:17 am, tonight is by far the hardest night of my life, 9 minutes after midnight God was given the most special Angel ever.

I was holding the hand of my sister, also, Brooke and Melanie's sister, as she took her last breath.

My younger sister Erin Baker was the strongest women I know, and had the biggest heart, it was that heart of her's that finally gave out tonight.

Erin has been sick most of her life, but if you know her she never complained. She is, was amazing and her faith truly kept her strong and she is going to be missed so much by everyone who knows her. Her biggest loves are her two daughters, Lacy Carroll and Lauren Brewerand the grandchildren they gave her. I don't know how they will manage without their "E", Erin spoke with them each day, sometimes, 4 or 5 times.

My parent have lost a child, Erin was living with them and I'm very concerned about them now. How is it okay to outlive a child? How do we move forward? Right now for me to be writting all this is somewhat theraputic, I am still numb and want to wake up tomorrow moring with this being a horrible nightmare. I cant sleep and I cant crumble, too much to take care of, I'll crumble later, I have to be strong for the next couple of weeks. Brooke Ward is really hurting right now and I'm so worried about her, I'm worried about my parents, Erin's children, grandchildren and our entire family.

We need to pull together, support and love, for that's what "E" would want. My lil sis I'm so sorry for what you went through tonight, I pray your at peace now with that God you speak so highly of.

In Memoriam: Erin Baker

Erin (Henderson) Baker, known as “E” by her grandchildren, passed away September 19 in the emergency room at Menifee Valley Medical Center after fighting a lifelong battle with Crohn’s disease.

Family members say that, despite the illness that caused pain during much of her life, Erin was the ultimate survivor and ray of sunshine to all who knew her. She also was known for her strong faith in her Lord and bringing comfort to others when they were unable to comfort her.

Erin was born in Burbank, California on June 14, 1957 to Robert and Sheila Henderson, with whom she has lived in Canyon Lake for the past several years.

In addition to her parents, Erin is survived by two daughters: Lauren (Breck) Brewer of San Antonio, Texas, with their four children, Dillon, 8, Teague, 6, and twins, Sadie and Claire, 4; and Lacy (Lance) Carroll of Colorado Springs, Colorado, with their two children, Violet, 4, and Thadius, 1.

Erin also is survived by sisters Lynelle Henderson of Canyon Lake, Brooke (Tony) Ward of Burbank and Melanie Henderson of Burbank, along with nieces and nephews: Blu, Hailey and Kevin Murray, Carlie and Ace Ward, and Hogan and Emery Henderson.

Lynelle will hold a celebration of life Saturday, September 24, at her home in Canyon Lake. The Wards also will have a celebration of life Sunday, September 25, at their home in Burbank.

BURBANK, Calif. (September 16, 2011) - A draft of the City of Burbank's revised ten year Strategic Plan for 2011-2021, currently titled "Our Plan, Our Future, Our Burbank," is now available for public review and input.

Every 10 years, the City embarks on developing a new Strategic Plan that will serve as the foundation and vision for the City's operations for the next decade. This current draft, developed from input received by the City's Boards and Commissions, the 2010 Citizen Survey, and each City department, is comprised of ten overriding goals, accompanied by several objectives, that the City will be looking to achieve. Additionally, a revised mission statement has been created to more appropriately guide the City's operations and reflect the community's values. The full report is available here on the City's website, www.BurbankUSA.com, and hard copies can be viewed at the reference desk of the three public libraries and the City Clerk's Office.

The City of Burbank encourages its citizens and business owners to participate in this process which will direct the City's operations for the next ten years. This is a great opportunity for alumni to get involved in the Sr. Bulldogs Foundation. In this cyber world it is no longer necessary to live in Burbank. Everything can be sent electronically so that anyone can become involved.

Hi Alan, Linda & Cathy: Just heard more sad news today when Greg Gatton, from our class ('67), called to inform us of his brother, Bruce Gatton's ('71) passing on Sunday, July 31, 2011. Bruce had been suffering for several years with pancreatic cancer.

John & I have known Bruce since he helped coach our youngest son on the Burbank High football team in the late '80's. Bruce was always the first one to help out no matter what was needed. He was a giant of a man and very intimidating in appearance, yet had a heart of gold. We will miss him dearly. He leaves behind his father; brother, Greg; and two sons, Mitchell and Paul.

Sometime during the night of June 20th Carole Collins had a stroke in her eye. This is called “central retinal vein occlusion” or nickname “RVO”.

RVO is a disease of the retina that affects approximately 180,000 people each year in the US. Veins in the eye, known as retinal veins are an important part of the eye’s normal circulation. They move blood out of the eye toward the heart. A retinal vein occlusion is the blockage of one of these veins in the central or main retinal vein at the back of the eye. This tissue at the back of the inner eye converts light images to nerve signals and sends them to the brain.

RVO can lead to swelling of the macula, the part of the eye responsible for central vision and fine detail. This swelling can cause blurry or distorted vision in the affected eye. In some cases, RVO can lead to permanent vision loss.

The symptoms of RVO are blurry and or distorted vision. Some people with RVO may not notice any symptoms. Carole has both of these.

The risk factors…..people who are over 50 years old, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, hardening of the arteries, glaucoma, smoking and obesity. Carole has several of these. RVO is most often caused by hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and the formation of a blood clot.

Blockage of retinal veins may cause other eye problems, including: Glaucoma and macular edema.

Carole’s eye will be closely monitored for any more blockages for several months. A tear in the vein has been discovered and she on a medicine named “Lucentis” which is to stop the blood leaking. It is not usual to have an RVO in both eyes.

Many people will regain vision, even without treatment. However, vision rarely returns to normal. There is no way to reverse or open the blockage.

Treatment: Injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) drugs into the eye. Carole has started this. These drugs may block the growth of new blood vessels that can cause glaucoma. Laser treatment to prevent the growth of new, abnormal blood vessels that lead to glaucoma is also a treatment.

Prognosis: The outcome varies. Patients with retinal vein occlusion often regain useful vision. Retinal vein occlusion is a sign of a general blood vessel disease. The same measures used to prevent strokes in the heart, and other coronary artery disease, may decrease the risk of further retinal vein occlusion. Aspirin or other blood thinners may help prevent blockages in the other eye.

Carole really likes her eye Dr. She is taking drugs. Things seem to be a little better. Put her on your prayer list.

Burbank City Council has saved a second piece of residential history.

Council members last week approved the historic designation of a two-story, wood-framed farm house at 834 E. Magnolia Blvd. — only the second house in Burbank to make it on the historic list since the city’s preservation laws were passed in 1994.

The home’s owners, Kent and Marlene Burton, have made some modifications to the house, built in 1910, such as adding a wood deck in the backyard and replacing the front windows. But the changes have not significantly altered the structure and are reversible if property owners decide to return the house to its original state in the future, according to a city report.

“I just think it’s really important that we try to retain some of what Burbank is all about,” Marlene Burton said. “If we didn’t do that, eventually all these old houses would go down.”

The 2,088-square-foot farm house has six bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms.

Marlene Burton said one of the bedrooms is used as a den and another serves as an office.

When they moved into the house, the additional bedrooms were needed.

“We had three children, so we needed the extra space,” Marlene Burton said.

Any future exterior modifications must now be approved by the Burbank Heritage Commission.

The house met two criteria contained in the city’s historic preservation ordinance — both tied to its design. The house, with its gabled front roof, features a mix of late Queen Anne and early Craftsman designs. Assistant Community Development Director Michael Forbes said few houses with those architectural styles are left in the city.

It was one of the first houses built along Magnolia Boulevard. A photo taken in 1914 shows that stretch of road at the time, Forbes said. The area was primarily fields and farmland, except one house — its peaked roof can be seen above the trees.

Forbes said several residents have expressed interest in having their properties considered for historic designation, but only one application has been filed.

Heritage commissioners are contacting some local businesses to see if their owners would like to pursue historic preservation. Two businesses of interest are Foster’s Freeze on Glenoaks Boulevard and the Burbank Bar and Grill on San Fernando Road, said commission Chairman Don Baldaseroni.

Owners of historically designated structures can apply for property tax exemptions under the Mills Act, which the Burbank City Council approved in 2010.

I periodically check your blog for BHS info and was truly shocked to learn Pat passed away back in January. Around Centennial time in '08 Pat and I reconnected via Facebook or some other social media venue. At the time, I did not realize that Pat attended USMA and graduated in 1971 or John Ferguson in 1972. I left Burbank right after graduation and never really kept in touch with folks. My ties to Burbank were limited since BHS was my third high school. Anyway, I had the pleasure of being on the USMA faculty 81-84. Pat and I emailed back and forth a few times but I never hooked up with John Ferguson or Ken Powers. All three were good guys when I knew them. Well as good as 10 and 11 year old boys can be.

I have attached a photo taken probably around 1961 at the Burbank YMCA. In the photo is a tall teenager in a black shirt your far right....yours truly (BHS '62). I coached the boys Y swim team for a couple years and lettered swimming a couple years at BHS. Directly to my right is Ken Powers (67), directly below Ken is John Ferguson (68) and bottom row third from your right Pat (67). In addition, to Ken's right Randy Ziglar (64) and bottom row second from your left Rob Meade (66). Thought maybe the picture may draw some interest from your readers.

Don't make it to Burbank much. Last trip was June '08 to visit my cousin Tom Turner (BHS 71, he play QB in those days) and his lovely bride, Pat Dalton Turner (72). They reside in Valencia, CA.

Good job on the blog by the way. Enjoy reading it from time to time. Have fun at Panama City.....went there many times when I was stationed (75-78) up the road at Fort Rucker, AL.

Again sadden by Pat's passing.

Things will really heat up when the sun goes down. That's when the grand finale with a stunningly choreographed firework show will cap festivities in a profusion of light and sound.

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS

It all starts at 5:00 P.M. with a flag salute and live broadcast on the steps of City Hall (275 E Olive Avenue) featuring KNBC Weatherman Fritz Coleman, civic dignitaries, former Mayors and a host of celebrities from Burbank's rich film and television production history.

During the ceremony, a time capsule will be opened and contents revealed. A new capsule filled with mementos from the Centennial will be buried later in the year for the benefit of future generations.

After the capsule opening, Mickey Mouse will present one of the largest cupcake displays ever. Big enough to feed 2,000 people, this super-sized confection made from thousands of regular-sized cakes stacked high on a custom-built stand, will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Concocted by a dream-team of master bakers from Porto's Bakery & Cafe, Martino's Bakery, United Bakery and Yummy Cupcakes, this delectable tower of flour is guaranteed to satisfy every sweet tooth.

§ Just after the ceremony at approximately 5:45 P.M. will be the Air Parade, an awe-inspiring pageant in the sky that will pay homage to Burbank's close ties to aviation. Included will be McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets and B-25 Mitchell bombers flown by the United States Navy, Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena Police Notar helicopters, a Los Angeles County Sheriff "Air 5" Rescue helicopter, helicopters from Los Angeles County Fire, Long Beach Police and the Orange County Sheriff departments, Aero Squadron World War II planes and more.

§ Then, there will be the Mascot Parade led by Bugs Bunny and featuring Burbank High's Bulldog, the John Burroughs Indian, Hootie the Owl, Domino's Noid, Geoffrey the Giraffe, the H.T. Bee, Sergeant McGruff the Crime Dog, Burbank Fire Department's L'il Squirt and many more. Characters will cavort down Olive Avenue to San Fernando Boulevard, where there will be numerous photos ops with the public.

There will be multiple stages with continuous performances by rock and rollers Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries, the Alley Cats, a USO Show by Wartime Radio Revue, a DJ spinning Burbank's favorite tunes, a Fabulous Fifties stage with the retro crooners High Street, celebrity lookalikes, jazz and blues band The Bluez Express, a kids stage featuring Radio Disney talent, and more.

Downtown restaurants will be offering special menus in celebration of the Centennial.

To finish, a stunning Fireworks Grand Finale choreographed to Burbank-related movie and television soundtracks, such as themes from Laugh In, The Tonight Show, Looney Tunes Cartoons, Happy Days and films by Tim Burton and Ron Howard.

Rowen Zipfel passed away peacefully at his home in Burbank, after a long illness, May 23, 2011. His entire immediate family had gathered the day before to be with him.

Rowen was 93 years old and had been married to the love of his life, Bettie for 68 years.

Rowen was born August 15, 1917 in Bakersfield, California. When he was of Junior High age, he attended John Burroughs Jr. High and later, graduated from Burbank High in the winter of 1936, where he was active in football and other sports and activities.

Rowen was a journeyman plumber for well over 40 years. Even in his retirement, he was always busy. He was a talented artist and has produced many watercolor paintings. He did wonderful leather work and also could build or make just about anything out of wood. He was very mechanical and could fix “whatever needed fixing”…He loved music and was a wonderful dancer. In his younger years, he was also an avid horseman and loved to fish. He was a wonderful storyteller to his daughter and his grandchildren. He was his family’s hero. And…he absolutely LOVED Ice Cream and Apple Pie! (Apple Pie was his Birthday Cake of Choice for years!)

Rowen was pre-deceased by his Mother, Mabel Dunham, Father Joseph Dunham, brother Donald Zipfel BHS ‘33, brother, Robert Zipfel BHS Summer ‘36 and nephew, Daniel Zipfel.

Rowen is survived by his wife Bettie Zipfel, his daughter Pam Zipfel Kirkwood BHS ’64, Son-in-law Jon Kirkwood BHS ’64, Granddaughter Kirsten Kirkwood JBHS ’97, Grandson Kris Kirkwood JBHS ’97, Great-Grandsons Caleb Cook-Wickline, Kristian Rowen Kirkwood, Sister Patricia Goodman, 2 Nephews and 3 Nieces.

Rowen was loved and treasured by his family and friends and will be missed so very much. We were all so fortunate to have had him in our lives.

Dear Reader,

It is now Friday, May 20, 2011. After 7 years and over 2,120 intravenous catheter needle sticks into my arms, a miracle is within sight!

My cousin Cindy, who is also my Godmother, has been tested and found to be a suitable match for me. This sweetest angel is coming to save my life after my Mom and my Stepsister Lisa tried to donate a kidney to me. My Mom was a good match but not a suitable surgical candidate. Lisa was not a good match at all, however I am so grateful to them for getting tested and trying.

After 7 years of trying to hang on and stay positive, heaven has found a willing and loving heart who will share the gift of life with me! All of us are very frightened at what we will be going through during and after the transplant, but the love we all share will give us the strength to see this through. The cost of a transplant surgery is enormous, not just for the surgery. It seems that the donor will be in the UCLA area for about a week, however, I must be in the area for a month or more, and I am considered a high risk patient because of the blood disease (TTP) that destroyed my kidneys seven years ago.

After all the researching we have done, the average cost of housing in the hospital area is about $125.00 per day. When you add in food, fuel costs, and other necessities it is easy to see that a few thousand dollars a month could easily be exceeded. In addition we must face the possibility of having to take up to 50 medications a day for several months after surgery. As you can see the costs continue to escalate. My Dad just smiles and says that I am worth every dime and Mom and Dad continue to cut back so there will be funding available to get me through all of this.

My Mom and Dad have spent and continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and money over the years to keep me in as good a position as they possibly could. They have put up with many severe mood swings, anger, and outright hostility from me brought on by the chemical and hormonal changes of the stress of dialysis. They know fully well that I wish I could control these outbreaks but I just am not able to do it because of my disease.

We all had a very touching moment on Mother’s Day when my 8 year old son said, with tears in his eyes, “Mommy, what am I going to do if I don’t have you any more”? Of course we all reassured him that everything is going to be fine, however no 8 year old who has never had a “healthy” Mom should not have to worry about such things.

I have all the emotional support in the world from my Mom, Dad, and my friends, however I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with some of the funding that is going to be required in my effort to stay alive. Our resources have been stretched to the breaking point with just the costs of preparation for the transplant. We have been making frequent trips to UCLA for testing and meetings from our home in Nevada. These trips, while necessary, have been very expensive considering the cost of fuel, food, and lodging.

I am now 28 years old and ready and anxious to begin a normal life with my son and family. I realize that my life will always be in some jeopardy but I intend to live every day of my life as thought there may be no tomorrow. I know that each day of life ithat we have s a blessing.

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- A local high school choir that inspired the hit TV series "Glee" is in danger of being shut down.

It's one of the best programs in the state, arguably one of the best programs in the country. But with state funding cuts, the Burbank High School choir program requires lots of outside funding.

They're hoping their annual show will keep the program out of the red. They need $20,000 to $25,000 to keep going.

The Burbank Choir Association's upcoming show is elaborate and sophisticated with fancy costumes and professional sound and lighting. This kind of production value costs money, and therein lies the rub.

Brett Carroll is the director of Burbank's High's Vocal Music Association. His choir programs have won national recognition but with donations down, money is tight.

"There is the danger of losing the program if we're not careful," Carroll said. "In the past we've put all the money we've made back into the shows for the kids, but right now we have to make money to support the other things we do throughout the year."

Starting Thursday night, all five competitive choirs at Burbank High will stage a two-hour extravaganza, hoping to raise enough money to stay afloat.

The performers hope their show will attract big crowds.

"It's going to be awesome," Burbank High senior and performer April Kiyomihishinuma said. "All the good acts are going to be compacted into one super show."

The participating students say the Vocal Association provides them with opportunities they would never get elsewhere.

The big pop show will be staged at Burbank High's auditorium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Tickets are $20 to $25.

I am sorry to report that Steven passed away on the evening of 05/03/2011 due to complications from Leukemia. He put up a huge battle for 16 months, and had a bone marrow donor in waiting when he came down with a rare and unusual bacterial infection which eventually attacked his lungs.

Steven was in the Class of 1971 and he is also the brother of Greg Bailey who passed away just prior to Steven's initial Leukemia diagnosis.

Attached is a link to his obituary and a video tribute to him.

He leaves behind his mother Ora Bailey, his sister Beverly Henkel both of Ukiah, Calif., as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his "other mother" Emma Taylor of Tarzana, Calif., beloved friend Maloy Moore of Los Angeles and pets Lord William Wallace of Stirling and Miss Savannah. We would like to thank Dr. Barry Seltzer of Winston-Salem Health Care and all of the staff and volunteers of Baptist Hospital for their friendship, love and compassion. Sad News from the BHS '70 Class sent by Alan Landros (BHS '70)...

Below is a message that I received last night, May 5, from our 1970 classmate, Merle Bobzien:

"Alan,

Once again, we lose another 1970 BHS graduate. This afternoon, Tom F. Pittman died at County USC Hospital. Three years ago, Tom had a melanoma removed from his back, and was apparently cleared of the problem. Last Thursday he was admitted to the hospital with a breathing and coughing condition, which turned out to be an aggressive and complete invasion of his lungs. As this was an inoperable and quickly terminal condition, the best that could be done for him was to make him comfortable. He went on ventilation support two days ago, but sank very quickly, which is common in these situations. This morning the family made the decision to take him off of life support, and Tom died quietly and without a struggle and without pain at 1:43 this afternoon.

Tom was a top photographer and shot innumerable air shows. Tom was a top recording engineer and was the official one for the Santa Monica Symphony. Tom was a contract graphic designer for several publication houses. The void he now leaves affects many.

He is survived by his mother, Mary, of Burbank, and his younger sister, Jayne, also of Burbank, and a 1973 BHS graduate.

Tom will be cremated, and arrangements for a memorial service are pending. Right now, the shock of Tom's sudden and unexpected loss is too great for all of his family and loved ones.

Tom Fredrick Pittman grew up in the 2800 N. block of Brighton St. in Burbank. He attended Horace Mann Elementary all the way through. He attended John Muir Jr. High for the 7th grade with many of us. Tom went to a private school, Southern California Military Academy in Long Beach, for 8th and 9th grades. He then returned to public school in Burbank in 1967 and went all the way through 10th, 11th, and 12th grades at BHS with all of us.

Tom lived in Westwood for a number of years now. He was 58 at the time of his passing yesterday. A recent photo of Tom Pittman is included.

Our sympathy goes to his family and friends. Thanks to Merle Bobzien for informing us, even though the news is sad.

Remembering Pickwick

Besides spending A LOT of time swimming ALL DAY during the summer at McCambridge Park in the 1950's and 1960's, I have fond memories of visiting Pickwick Swim Park and renting a big black inner tube to play with in the water. Then rolling it back across the lawn, trying not to hit anyone. Can you even get those tubes any more??

My sister Patty worked at Pickwick during the summer when home from college. I too worked there briefly in the food concession... the grease got to me - yuck.

Of course the ice rink was fun as a teen where we would flirt with the cute boys and skate once in a while.

The Pickwick Drive-In Theater was popular on the weekends.

And let's not forget the Pickwick Stables for those who enjoy horseback riding and the Pickwick Bowling Alley.

Then there was the Teenage Fair. I remember wearing white Bermuda shorts with a sky blue parka, doing the surfer stomp to Dick Dale and the Deltones. He was sooo cute! I got his autograph on a dollar bill which I used to have but who knows where it is today.

Funny thing... I saw Dick perform in Petaluma a couple of years ago with his young son. He still puts on a great show!

Every year I took Red Cross swimming lessons at Burbank High and for some reason, it was always first thing in the morning - brrrrr. I can't remember but I think we had to wear bathing caps.

Ahhhh yes... memory lane...

PS My first dive off the McCambridge high-dive was NOT a fond memory as it was belly-flop... OUCH!

OBITUARY FROM BURBANK LEADER

Paul G. Williamson, 92, passed peacefully at his home in Fresno, California on April 15, 2011 of congestive heart failure.

Born on October 9, 1918 in Oxnard, California, he was the son of Grover and Mary Williamson. Paul excelled in school, sports, and also became an accomplished trumpet player.

Paul married his beloved high school sweetheart, Ruth AlVerta Jaynes, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He entered the Navy, became an officer of a minesweeper, and saw action in Italy and southern France.

After obtaining his Masters degree from Cal, Paul began teaching in Burbank where he was promoted to Boys Vice-Principal at Burbank High School, and later became Principal at Jordan Junior High. Paul led through professionalism, commitment to innovative education, an unfailing sense of humor, and a positive outlook on life. Up until he died, many teachers, students, and parents kept in touch with him.

Not only was he an excellent tennis player, Paul was also a lifelong avid fisherman. He and AlVerta purchased land on the McKenzie River in Oregon and built a second home. Here Paul fished, made new friends, and created a bountiful garden. For many years, the happy couple traveled the world

Paul was preceded in death by his older sister Carleen Howell, and, after 67 years of marriage, by AlVerta, who passed in December, 2009. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Alonzo, his son Gary, his son Jay, his son-in-law Mike, his daughter-in-law Bailey, and grandchildren Iris, Corey, Rhonda, Tony, Randy and Sean.

Pursuant to Paul’s request, his ashes will be spread during a private family ceremony.

Russ Riegler (BHS '75) Passed Away April 22, 2011

Received this sad email today from Mike McDaniel (BHS '74) who also works for the City of Burbank. Please keep the Riegler family in your thoughts and prayers.

We are sorry to announce that Russ Riegler, BWP Senior Power Plant Mechanic, passed away at his home in Burbank on Friday, April 22nd, at the age of 54, due to heart problems. Russ lived in Burbank his entire life and graduated from Burbank High in 1975. He worked for the City for 32 years and his hard work and outgoing personality will be missed.

Russ liked marathons, working on classic Mustang cars, collecting model trains and everything Elvis. He also enjoyed taking his 1979 Jeep off-roading with friends and playing with the family dog, Zack. Russ leaves behind his wife Darlene, and their two sons Ross and Rick.

Yea! What a day…

Between the continuing saga of the visa extension quest and the development of the Best Practices Workshop next week we’ve had little time for our primary and core mission: working with the Rangers, Tourist Police and other people (and animals) of Petra. Our prayers (or other exaltations) have been heard during this “Holy Week,” and we got our visa extension today! It only took one more trip to Ma’an and then back to Wadi Mousa for fingerprinting, interrogation about who we’re spying for (need to make sure it isn’t for that “un-named land to the west”), and… just kidding… but, we did get our extension.

Today’s real triumph was observing the veterinary efforts with the horses here by The Brooke Animal Clinic. For years Petra has been receiving complaints about the condition and care of the animals here (primarily the horses, but donkeys and camels too). Our ol’ amigo “Cowboy Fred” helped bring the husbandry program along, and it is much improved over prior years. However, just days after Fred’s return to the USA the Director of PAP met with the interim Director of The Brooke here at Petra and daily inspections by veterinary staff is now underway. Thanks also goes to Princess Alia for her patronage with the clinic. Many of the horses have a fungal infection in their hooves, but efforts are underway to offer preventative education on proper care (clean-those-hoofs) and stabling. Other procedures are also being proposed so visitors will encounter healthy and well cared for stock. Well done! On a sadder note, I received note a few weeks ago about the passing of an acquaintance from high school. I was a shy guy at Burbank High, but occasionally wondered: “what ever happened to…” I read recently that she had a steadfast love and appreciation for all things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small and her belief in the essential equality of all people.”

LOS ANGELES -- A CNNMoney and CNN Special Investigations Unit Exclusive report

"Happy Days," one of the most popular shows in television history, faces an unhappy legacy nearly four decades after it first went on the air.

Four cast members, and the estate of Tom Bosley, who died last October, claim CBS (CBS, Fortune 500), which owns the show, has not paid them for merchandising revenues they are owed under their contracts.

The show, which originally aired from 1974 to 1984, "represented to the public what the best of America has to offer," said Anson Williams, who played Potsie. "The friendships, the opportunities, the warmth. Unfortunately, now 'Happy Days' also represents the worst of America -- of what major companies are trying to get from it, trying to use it for, and forgetting the family it created."

In exclusive interviews with CNN, the cast members -- Williams, Don Most, Marion Ross and Erin Moran -- all claim they have been cut out of the merchandising bonanza the show has spawned. Those products includes comic books, t-shirts, scrapbooks, trading cards, games, lunch boxes, dolls, toy cars, magnets, greeting cards and DVDs where their images appear on the box covers.

When the actors learned their images were also put on "Happy Days," slot machines, they said they began wondering where all the money ended up.

"When these slot machines came out, it was like Barnum and Bailey came to town," Williams said. "We were bombarded with, oh look at these pictures, they'd be all over the country."

Under the actors' contracts, they were supposed to be paid 5% from the net proceeds of merchandising if their sole image were used, and 2 1/2% if they were in a group. The studio could deduct 50% off the top as a "handling fee."

"It takes a lot to make me angry because so often my expectations are so low," Ross said. "But the other day someone came up to me and said, 'You must be cleaning up on those casinos.' And I said, 'Well, what are you talking about?' And he said, 'If you get five Marions, you get the jackpot."'

Attorney Jon Pfeiffer represents the actors in their case against CBS, which owns the show. He filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

"The issue is the five cast members of 'Happy Days' were not paid for the royalties for their name and likeness," Pfeiffer told CNN. "That being the use of their picture, use of their name in slot machines, in games, in greeting cards, in t-shirts, anything where you saw a 'Happy Days' face of a character, they were not paid for that."

Ron Howard, who played Richie Cunningham, and Henry Winkler, who played the Fonz, are not part of the lawsuit. Howard, through his publicist, declined to comment. Representatives for Winkler have not returned CNN's calls.

In 1999, Moran did receive $692 for merchandising after she said she pressed the studio, which was then Paramount Pictures. In a document sent to Moran, Paramount said she was previously paid $8,229 for merchandising, but Moran told CNN she had not received that money.

Moran declined to discuss details of her current financial situation but confirmed that last year, she lost her California home to foreclosure after attempts to work out a loan modification with her bank failed.

"It definitely could have made a difference," Most said. "I would think so, and right now it could really make a difference because (Moran) is going through a bit of a hard time."

Unhappy days: The story in pictures
The issue, Pfeiffer said, is that "they (the studio) made a promise to pay, they broke their promise -- that's breach of contract. Number two, they made a promise to pay, they purposefully didn't pay, they broke their promise -- the fraud."

"And here we have iconic actors. I mean, I grew up watching these people. And yet they got stiffed," Pfeiffer said.

He said attempts at mediation to resolve the dispute earlier this year failed.

CBS, in a statement e-mailed to CNN, said, "We agree that funds are owed to the actors and have been working with them for quite some time to resolve the issue."

A CBS consumer products spokesperson said that would be the company's only comment.

In documents provided to the actors, CBS said it only owes them between $8,500 and $9,000 each for the last four years. Most of that money is from slot machine revenues. The actors argue they are owed millions of dollars.

Pfeiffer said Bosley "couldn't believe that they didn't know they owed the money. And instead of paying what a small sliver of what CBS is making on these slot machines, they decided not to pay, and he was upset."

Just two days before Bosley died, Most said he left him a voice message.

"He was upset with what this represented and he wanted to know," Most told CNN. "He called me, and I called him, and he left a message on my machine that said, 'I'm fine, I'm going to be leaving the hospital tomorrow. But I'd really like to hear what's going on.'"

Asked why they didn't raise the merchandising issue earlier, Williams said, "We're actors. We were going through other things. We just thought if there was something to be made, we'd get it in the mail. We didn't think about it. But when those slot machines hit, it just woke us all up to look back and say, 'Wait and minute.'"

The "Happy Days" slot machines were launched in 2008 and have "performed well for the casinos, which in industry vernacular often means coin-in," Mollie Cole, director of communications for WMS Gaming, wrote in an e-mail.

"Happy Days," she wrote, "is a five-level Free Spin Progressive slot machine, where the number of spins increases during play, with three base games -- Cunninghams Go Wild, The Fonz and Richie's Big Night; the latter was a big hit in casinos."

She said the company does not release specific numbers showing how many machines are in casinos.

Asked about the legal battle ahead, Ross said, "I haven't thought about how long this could go because our lawyers will take care of a lot of it. Once we've stated our case, then that's pretty much our story, and the rest is a legal problem, and I think we have some wonderful people working for us, and I think they'll do a great job."

The cast members said their case will be precedent-setting because it's the first time actors from an iconic show have sued over merchandising.

"There's a bigger picture here," Most said. "We're one show, but there's many other shows, and we've spoken to many other actors, and they haven't seen any money for merchandising, so we think this is pervasive. This is just the way that business is done, and we have -- in our original contracts, it says we're supposed to get 'X' amount for merchandising -- it says in our contract. But the fact is, we haven't gotten paid, and many other actors in other shows haven't gotten paid."

In the last several years, CBS Consumer Products has issued news releases about expanding merchandising deals for its most popular shows, including "Happy Days." For example, the company announced deals with a clothing manufacturers in Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, new apparel collections in Canada, and Bluetooth headsets in the U.S.

In addition, plans are in the works for a "Happy Days"-themed lottery game, a spokesman for Alchemy3, which has a licensing deal with CBS to create instant and on-line game tickets for several television shows, told CNN.

"Happy Days is the type of show that represents the best we can be," Williams said. "It's something warm, something tactile when life was good and life was simple. When friends were there and neighbors were neighbors ... I think it's going to ring in peoples' hearts because it's going beyond this show. It's going to go into their world, into how they're being treated in whatever arena they're working or participating in."

But now, "there's a huge juxtaposition for 'Happy Days' to represent the coldness of big business, the wrongdoing of big business and the greed of big business," Williams said. "And the idea that they don't have to abide by contracts, and they can get away with anything as long as they are not caught. And they picked the wrong show."

Kevin Butcher, BHS 2005, Died in Motorcycle Accident

Hi Cathy, this is Annette Dinolfo Bennett. I found out today that a burbank high graduate of 2005 with my son Tanner Bennett had been killed in a motorcyle accident on Sunday April 10th named Kevin Butcher ...he worked at Chase Bank on SanFernando Rd and Burbank Blvd. He was 23 years of age....just some infor for now ....he was a Boy Scout all the school years played t ball with our son...Great kid and what a loss....

Kevin Butcher, 23-Year-Old Burbank Man on Motorcycle, Killed in I-10 Crash With Another (Allegedly Drunk) Man on Motorcycle

Kevin Butcher was riding his red Ducati motorcycle down the 10 East yesterday afternoon, when traffic began to slow up ahead. He was riding behind another motorcyclist on a white Honda at the time -- a 29-year-old man from North Hollywood who West L.A. CHP Officer Travis Ruiz guesses was Butcher's friend. Both were reportedly "splitting lanes" while pushing 90 mph. Then, just before 4:30 p.m. near the exit to the 405, the Acura in front of them put on the brakes. Though the Honda began to brake as well, Butcher did not -- so his motorcycle slammed into the one in front of him.

"The Honda that got run into went down on the ground and went down underneath the Acura," says Ruiz. "Then the Ducati goes up over the Acura." Butcher was found unconscious at the scene, and later pronounced dead at the UCLA Medical Center. The North Hollywood man was transported to the hospital as well -- but not before failing a field sobriety test and being handcuffed to his stretcher.

Ruiz says the 29-year-old was in fine enough condition to take the test at the scene, but soon noticed a huge gash in his own leg. No other injuries were reported.

On Facebook, Butcher lists his hometown and current residence as Burbank. He's a fan of Da Bike Shop, a motorcycle customization and repair shop in North Hollywood.

One Los Angeles Times commenter writes, "Rest in peace lil butcher." And another: "Kevin Lynn Butcher you will be missed." A commenter named Richard also offers a witness account: "We were driving back from PCH and saw 2 bikes zipping between traffic lanes. A minute later all the traffic slowed and we saw the 2 downed bikes and several stopped cars. One rider was on the ground as another person pumped his chest. It was a sobering reminder about the dangers of riding between cars, especially on the 10 by the 405 intersection."

Pam, I would llike to tell you about the untimely death of my brother, Michael E. Ross D.D.S., BHS class of 1963. He was the president of his senior class in 1963. He practiced denistry in Orange County for 40 years and was a loving, compasionate and remarkable human being. He was recognized as one of the top ten dentist in the United States in 2008. Mike is survied by his father Milton E. Ross of Corona Del Mar and his brother Stephen C. Ross of Onalaska, Wi. He will also be missed by his many colleagues and friends in the Orange County area.

I am so sorry to have to tell you that I have very sad news about Lyn Garner. Lyn passed away late last year, after enduring a very difficult and painful fight with pancreatic cancer. Lyn was such a wonderful person and she was my dearest friend. Fortunately, her son and daughter were by her side when she passed on. Again, I am so sorry to be the bearer of such sad news, but I look forward to hearing from you again under happier circumstances. I hope that you and your family are all in good health.

Greg Varon, BHS '75, passed away this afternoon (Wednesday, March 23) at about 2:30 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in West L.A. after a long illness. He was 54. Greg grew up on Birmingham Rd. in Burbank, the middle child of Leo and Betty Varon. Many in Burbank remember Greg a number of years ago as the owner of Greg's Carpets. During some of that time he and his own family lived at the corner of Amherst and Sixth St., in the large two story home. He and his wife now lived in Pacific Palisades.

Greg Varon is survived by his wife; his three children, Rachel, Brandon, and Amy; a grandchild; his mother, Betty Varon of Burbank; his sister, Michele Varon, BHS '72; and his younger brother, Dr. Bruce Varon, BHS '75, who some will know from his chiropractic office located at Olive Ave. and Glenoaks in Burbank.

The next Senior Bulldog Luncheon will be on Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Burbank Elks located at 2232 N. Hollywood Way. Time is 11AM and Lunch is $12.

The Southern Section Lunches in Oceanside are held the 2nd Tuesday of every other month at the I Hop in Oceanside in front of Boney's at 1-5 and Oceanside Blvd at 10 AM.

The Central Coast Senior Bulldogs meet at 11:30AM at CJ's in Arroyo Grande. Normallly, lunches are held once a quarter...For more info call Joe Tilton at 805-929-6937.

Thank you all for the prayers for Douglas Livesay BHS 64, he went home to the Lord Feb. 26, 2011 peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by Starr Johnson, and two sons Douglas Livesay the 3rd and Richard Livesay. Had 6 grandchildren.

The City of Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking nominees for induction into the Burbank Athletics Federation Walk of Fame. The Walk of Fame was established to acknowledge the contributions of athletes, coaches, volunteers and staff members who have achieved high standards and shown dedication and commitment to the Department.

In recognizing the value of sports and athletic activities within the community, the tribute highlights individuals who, in their roles as participants, volunteers or professional staff, have furthered the excellence of the City’s organized sports programs. Inductees are permanently honored with their names engraved on individual bricks that adorn a walkway behind diamond number two at Izay Park. Complete with inscriptions, the walk has room for many more future honorees. The Department will honor inductees at a ceremony that will be held in October of 2011.

The Criteria Committee will consider those individuals who began their involvement with City of Burbank programs in 1985 or earlier, although they could still be involved more recently. To nominate a deserving man or woman to be considered for inclusion into the Walk of Fame, an individual needs to fill out an application completely, including accurate supporting information and submit it by April 22, 2011. Applications are available in the Burbank Sports Office located in Olive Recreation Center, 1111 West Olive Avenue. Applications and further information can be found on line under the Park, Recreation and Community Services Department Sports section. For additional information you can also call the Burbank Sports Office at (818) 238-5330.
